South Dakota Sioux Tribe Seeks Emergency Assistance After Ice Storm

South Dakota Ice Storm

First Posted: 03/29/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:20 PM ET

Last week's ice storm in South Dakota left thousands without power and water. While many Red Cross resources are being diverted to relief efforts in Haiti, there is still the need for money and supplies in the upper midwest, specifically for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, which has a full list of needed medical and general supplies.

Power outages forced 35 kidney dialysis patients from the tribe to temporary relocate to Rapid City, and the reservation requires glucose strips, first aid kits and even children's medicine.

The local Wal-mart has sent food and supplies, but in-kind contributions are being accepted. A full list of what the Tribe requests:

•Non-perishable food
•Cots
•Heat sources (heaters & fuel)
•Camp stoves & fuel
•Lithium 1, 2 and 3 batteries for law enforcement
•Lamps/Batteries/Lamp Oil
•Toilet paper
•Paper products for the shelters
•Pampers/formula
•Hand/baby wipes/Hand sanitizer

Ship in-kind donations to:
Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Chairman's Office
Attn: Ice Storm Emergency Supplies
PO Box 590
2001 Main Street (Tribal Offices)
Eagle Butte, SD 57625

You can also contribute money to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe's emergency relief fund, which has been depleted in the past months. Online donations are currently unavailable.
Mail checks to:

I just "donated?" money online to what I believe to be "Cheyenne-river-tribe-storm-relief-emergency-assistance" via giveMN.org. via "Network for Good?"
Are online donations now currently available? are they still unavailable as you most recently stated?

Hey, everyone. We here in the East, anyway, truly have a skewed understanding of Indian casinos. The ones here in CT are super beautiful, upscale, pretty...fit right in with the CT/NY state of mind. However,I've been to the southwest plenty of time, though I know South Dakota is NOT there, thank you. I couldn't believe the tribal Indian casinos I saw there. They are not at ALL like what you hear about in the news or see in "destination" spots. I did see TWO that were modern, big resorts..the other ones reminded me of cheap bars out of 1950's noir films. Folks, those Indians are poor-very poor. And their states as "sovereign nations" is due to an ugly history with the country they are in. Now I LOVE my country. But as a nation, we have NOT done all peoples right, as is our ideal to strive for. We all know it. PLEASE, if you can change your voice from DISDAIN to at least passive acceptance (which is just a hair-width above disdain), at least it's going in the right direction. For the life of me, I don't understand where the cynicism comes from. THEY AREN'T RICH....THEY ARE POOR. You don't have to give them your life savings, or your house. But you can try to give some respect...a bit of research on the internet will show you. Don't be so harsh and quick in your judgments is all I can say.

Uhhh, aren't they a "soverign nation"?

Let them take care of it themselves. With some of that heap big casino money perhaps.

I agree. Indian Nations should be either part of the US or not. if they are, then they need to obey the laws and pay taxes etc. If they are not, well, then put up a fence and ask for passports for entrance and exit.

They should ask their fellow casino owners for help first.

So is Haiti, yet they are getting lots of help. The Sioux and all Native American nations have been treated as less than human since white man made contact with them. Why do they deserve less? It is the US's fault for the dire circumstances they face every day. You make me ill.

Haven't seen a thing on CNN about this.
Hopefully folks will be able to donate items or money in the same way they did for Haiti.
Do you think George Clooney knows about this ??

Thanks HuffPo. I haven't seen a word about this anywhere in the media. Way to keep making a difference.
