'Dunno Y . . . Na Jaane Kyun' To Give Bollywood Its First Gay Kiss

Dunno Y

India may confront one of its longest held taboos this year, as the film "Dunno Y ... Na Jaane Kyun" threatens to present Bollywood with its first gay kiss.

Due to the film's focus on a gay relationship, many have begun to compare the film to "Brokeback Mountain," and are hoping that the film will challenge prejudice in a similar manner. Despite its size, Bollywood has long been unusually conservative - until recently even heterosexual kissing was considered shocking.

"Dunno Y ... Na Jaane Kyun", which translates as 'Don't Know Why," was made last year after a High Court overturned a law outlawing homosexuality. The full legalization of homosexuality is expected but still must pass India's Supreme Court.

With the film due for release in May, posters for the film showing two naked men embracing have begun to be shown around Indian cities. While bound to cause controversy, the film's director, Sanjay Sharma, says he's confident that censors will approve the film for release. As Sharma recently told the BBC."At the moment I'm not thinking about any political or censor problems."

Recent Bollywood movies such as "Dostana" and "September 11" have begun to challenge stereotypes. In "Dostana", a heterosexual couple have to act as a gay couple in order to convince their landlord to let his attractive daughter live with them. "September 11", a film based upon the 9/11 attacks, was the first Bollywood film to show male buttocks.

Dunno Y, however, goes further than that, telling the story of a male model who goes to Mumbai to make his fortune, and the sexual relationship with another man that awaits him.

this is some stunt movie from some lefty liberal not very different from that Mehta woman.

Bollywood makes fun movies for the most part. None of the far lefty ointellectual garbage no one watches.

Deepa Mehta is vastly overated. I tend to think that the Canadian Press (and often the western press in General) hype her up because she's a western director making movies in India.

Wow, Indian films are getting very interesting.

I like their musicals, too. Can we have a gay one?

Apparently someone missed the film "Fire" by director Deepa Mehta.

India didn't become conservative until the British took over and shoved down their morals into Indians. India use to be a very open country.

There's Karma Sutra temples there!

The same thing happened in Africa.

Relatively true about India in terms of high culture anyway, not true about Africa. Tribal societies are usually extraordinarily conservative and intolerant. You forget also that Islam was in sub-Saharan Africa injecting all kinds of dogma and intolerance long before Christians showed up south of the Sahara to do the same.

Well, no, those aren't "Kama Sutra" temples. They are just regular temples which have some erotic carvings on them (usually ender 10% of the total carvings). I believe it was the Chandelas who primarily built them....

Hollywood makes more than a few turkeys itself, and for the same reason -- to appeal to the widest audience possible. Same with India, a subcontinent containing people with many different languages and customs. To be profitable the film industry panders to its audience. Name an entertainment that doesn't?

the taboo is in the writers head.. he obviously doesnt have a clue about indian culture...

its a known fact that in India sexual repression is so severe that most indian guys experiment with homosexuality....
most guys who lived on campus while at university have consensually made out with other guys
its also very common to see men walk hand in hand in india..

while society frowns upon wanton display of sexuliity (both homo and hetro) it does not really care if two men make out one another
10:13 PM on 02/03/2010
Um no, its not common for Indian guys to experiment with homosexuality.....that notion is all in YOUR head.

"its also very common to see men walk hand in hand in india.."

If you think that has anything to do with sexuality, it only shows how out of touch you are with the rest of the world.

Bollywood doles out the worst movies imaginable. There are a billion stories that can be told in India. and yet Bollywood copy cats many of the Hollywood blockbusters and tweeks it a bit, throws in some dancing bimbos and foreigh locales and actors that shout dialogues at you competing with one another as to who can shout louder...over acting, too much make up, stupid story lines...terrible editing..total lack of originality and to top it all off a running time of over 2 hours for the BS it dishes out...
Grow up...There is much original material in India..look around and be creative instead of trailing after
the West...
Sorry to be so harsh but it really bothers me to see so much money being spent on crapy creative attempts in a country plagued by poverty...

Silly lazy article. There have been several Bollywood films with gay themes made over the years.

Hang on, Huff Post! Fine enough (though pretty detail-less article) but how'd you get your very first sentence so factually wrong?
Homosexuality is NOT one of India's longest held tabboos. It is, in fact, one of it's shortest held, become criminalized and a severe taboo only in the days of the British. India has had one of the oldest and longest (if for the time being, no more) traditions cool with homosexuality.

The author may have been referring to the Republic of India, which kept many of the colonial laws.

Let's wait and see if the moral brigade there actually allows the release of the film.

I wonder if gay people in India get arranged marriages, haha!
