Jimmy The Groundhog did not see his shadow today in Sun Prairie, Wisc., meaning a short spring should be expected for 2010.

His official Web site provided this update:

A fireman shoveled a fresh path for Jimmy and his caregiver, Jerry to meet the mayor. It was a snowy morning in Sun Prairie, and Jimmy did NOT see his shadow! The crowd cheered as the mayor interpreted Jimmy's message, proclaiming an EARLY SPRING!

He joins Buckeye Chuck and Staten Island Chuck, who also did not see their shadows.

Groundhog Day's most infamous groundhog, however, did. Punxsutawney Phil predicted a long winter today, despite his counterparts in Ohio, New York, and Wisconsin.

What does it all mean? It's hard to say, but this Groundhog Day history will get you up to speed on what the tradition is all about.

You can also read up on Punxsutawney Phil, who despite his different prediction has quite a following online.
