Republicans may have a hard time keeping up their talking point about how reading Miranda rights to the Christmas Day bomber represented a dangerous new direction under President Barack Obama.

It turns out that that back in December 2001, Richard Reid -- the "shoe bomber" -- was read or reminded of his Miranda rights four times in two days, beginning five minutes after being taken into custody.

So What If Bush Did It Too?

If Bush were wrong in hindsight, that would not make Obama right for doing the same thing with the benefit of the hindsight Bush did not have. I think we all learned a similar principle in kindergarten.

It would be similar to saying that because we may have exited a bus at the wrong stop once, we must do so forever despite knowing of our prior error.

Given all that we learned in the eight years between the two failed bombings about al-Qaeda networks, the policy changes in the interim, and the creation of the legally-valid Guantanamo military tribunals capable of trying such individuals, the Obama administration can find no solace in a "Bush did it too" argument. Bush did it too, that's the standard for Obama?

I saw Harry Reid say that Bush tried 143 or so terrorist in civilian court. Now I find it ironic that Reid and the rest of the left hated everything about Bush and his policies and how wrong and stupid he is but he was not wrong or stupid when it when it comes to this issue, which begs the question what make you so sure he was right to put them on trial?

So why was it wrong to read them their rights.....

What's being said here is not so much about the "he did it first" excuse, but why is it NOW such dangerous thing when it wasn't then. Where was this outrage when it was done under shrub?

And yes, McConnell said that it was a mistake they had learned from, but I never did hear why it was such a mistake or what they learned.

Intellectually dishonest liberals making erroneous comments about military commissions. In other words, Reid was treated CORRECTLY, and so was the panty-bomber. Congress cannot legally pass, nor can the President legally enforce, an Unconstitutional law.

Reid (and KSM) should have been read his rights.
However, the idea that someone should be "told" of his right to remain silent and then torturing that same person, is silly.
Tortuturing someone isn't expecting that person to remain silent.

The latest line in the Republican's in their ever evolving talking points when they're questioned about their hypocrisy in criticizing Obama for, say, reading Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab his Miranda rights, but not Bush for reading Richard Reid his, seems to be: Bush was wrong to have done so.

My question to the hypocrites, er, Republicans is: When did you realize this, and what did you do about it?

It was O.K. for the Republicans to read Richard Reid his Miranda rights and try him in our court system, successfully, so what is the discussion, what is the problem... How stooooopid are these people.

Does the phrase "WE TAKE THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL" ring any bells? I don't recall there being any reference that it applied to United States citizens only. Why do people who claim reverence to the intent of our founding fathers insist that they limit the words they wrote. I think those who penned those words believed exactly what they wrote was intended for all of humanity. It was a brave initiative for all of humankind and it paid off with freedom and liberty spreading throughout much of the world. We cannot take it just for ourselves, as that is just plain arrogant. This country must be the light for human dignity and equality or we lose it ourselves. Criminals must have their day in court, equal under the law.

Of course it does refer to Americans only sir because that is THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE not the Constitution. You know the Document that declares America is free from The British empire. Maybe read the document and you will see that,not Canada not any other country It refers ONLY to the citizens of the U.S.
I guess you think that when arrested in another country they will give you the rights that you have in America. I guess the men that planned an attack and killed over 3,000 American citizens deserve the same rights as a bank robber or murderer.

Not to be picky, but several hundred who died in 9/11 were not Americans. With your direction "maybe read the document" I thought you were very concerned about comments made being factual and just wanted to set the record straight.

And maybe you should re-read the founding documents of this country, as well as the MORE THAN TWO CENTURIES in which ALL people who violated the laws of the USA were treated fairly, whether they were citizens, immigrants, or ANYTHING else!

Actually he's a British citizen... BUT, the statutes we use today were NOT in place when he did his shoe bomb thing and GTMO didn't exist it was ONLY 44 days after 9/11..

Underpants man and Reid only have one thing in common... They are MUSLIM TERRORISTS, oh, and they are both men. Other than that, the two cases cannot be compared....

Let me simplify this for the less intelligent people in this fine thread.

Terrorist people do not give trials, and read rights to people before they are behead on video camera and then dragged through the streets all the while this act being cheered by their fellow conspirators.

Americans, I would like to remind you of a little passage which was crammed into my head from K-12...

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

We are a nation that touts freedom, justice, and liberty for every man woman and child between our shores... So Are we any better than some terrorist in a cave somewhere with a civilian contractor held at gun point.. If we lock people we don't like up in a facility somewhere being tortured into confessions, and never given a fair trial?

You can't have your cake and eat it too, liberty and justice for all. Nowhere in this pledge of allegiance we all were forced to chant does it say liberty and justice for some.. just not the people we don't like.

And one last passage..

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. -- I'll let you guess where that's from.

I wish the media would keep the pressure on repubs when they say treat the Christmas bomber as an enemy combatant. Richard Reid was tried in a Federal Court Not enemy combatant. But the rethugs keep Ignoring that fact. And people believe them. and trust them? Why? All they do is lie and distort facts.
