Improving The Modern Mother-Daughter Relationship (VIDEO)

According to Dr. Charles Sophy, there is no relationship more fascinating nor frightening than the mother-daughter relationship. In an interview with the Today Show's Meredith Vieira, Dr. Sophy emphasized his confusion with a relationship wherein the two parties are "best friends one minute, and mortal enemies the next."

Dr. Sophy contends that mothers and daughters both "want the same things -- love, respect and understanding -- but don't always give them." The solution, he says, is a relationship in which mothers and daughters are not in competition with each other, but instead engage in mutual communication. He also suggests that mothers set firm boundaries early on, while staying open to compromise.
