Brittany Murphy's Cause Of Death: Pneumonia, Multiple Drug Intoxication

Brittany Murphy Cause Of Death

LOS ANGELES — Brittany Murphy, the star of "Clueless" and "8 Mile," died from pneumonia, with prescription drugs and anemia also playing a role, a coroner's official said Thursday.

The Dec. 20 death of the actress was accidental and likely could have been prevented if Murphy had seen a doctor sooner, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said.

He noted, however, that she did have an appointment scheduled with a physician a few days after she died.

Winter declined to specify what types of drugs were involved in her death and said further details would be released in several weeks when the report was completed.

He also said there was no evidence of wrongdoing.

Winter said Murphy's community-acquired pneumonia was serious and proved lethal when combined with the medications and iron deficiency anemia.

Murphy died at age 32 after collapsing in her Hollywood Hills home. Her mother and husband have said the actress didn't abuse prescription medications or have an eating disorder.

Attempts to reach them for further comment were not immediately successful.

Murphy's husband, Simon Monjack, and her mother, Sharon Murphy, told investigators the actress had been experiencing flu-like symptoms in the days before she died.

Monjack told The Associated Press last month that his wife did take several prescriptions, including an anti-seizure drug, but did not abuse the medications.

He said she had been taking over-the-counter Robitussin for her recent sickness.

Dr. Michael Baden, a former chief medical examiner in New York City, said the quantities and type of drugs Murphy was taking were key to understanding how she died.

"One doesn't die of pneumonia, usually, that quickly," Baden said.

He said the use of some prescription medications can lead to pneumonia.

"It sounds more like it's a drug-related than a natural pulmonary pneumonia," said Baden, who did not work on the Murphy case but has served as an expert witness in numerous high-profile deaths.

The deaths of Micheal Jackson, Keith Ledger and Brittany Murphy and a host of other celebrities, may all be linked. I have to wonder if the lack of privacy in these public figures lives lead them to make poor medical decisions. Did Kieth and Brittany choose not to go to the doctor or call 911 because they feared the publicity it would create? (I can see the headlines, 'Brittany checks into hospital, could it be THE eating disorder?') Did Michael hire a questionable doctor to protect his privacy? I think the answer to these questions is yes. Is our intense fascination with the famous, killing them? How utterly sad...

Michael hired a questionable doctor because doctors with ethics would not give him the drugs he wanted. Privacy had nothing to do with that wish.

"Anyone see her husband and mother on Larry King? I hate to say it, but they are just WEIRD. It also sounded like she had zero friends and that her whole life was her mom and husband. He was talking about everything from her time of the month to her "monkey-like" behavior."

As for their "weird" behavior, what I saw on LK were two people supporting each other in their grief. I saw a mother's raw anguish and a heartbroken husband who, in defending his deceased wife, was forced to discuss her "time of the month" to explain why the narcotic rx Vicodan/Vicoprofen was found in their home. The mentality that an individual exchanges all privacy for celebrity is a little hard to swallow when less than a month after burying a wife and daughter, on Christmas Eve no less, it is now the mother and husband whose behavior in mouring is now being judged. At what point did the grieving of a "celebrity" loved one become entertainment in our society? I.e. what purpose was served by the release of 911 tapes where "a wailing Sharon Murphy" could be heard........? I'm one of the first to watch Chloe, Joan, Juliana and Jay discuss red carpet disasters. But to criticize the behavior of the friends and relatives of the deceased is a sad reflection of................

This story should not have incuded the pompous, random speculations of Dr. Baden. He has nothing to do with the autoposy, and his "well it sounds like it was drugs" completely contradicts the first reports that Brittany had "community acquired pnemonia".

Obviously noone was smart enough to figure out that the pnemonia Dr. Baden is describing is caused by some kind of unconscious aspiration secondary to drug-induced states.

Community acquired pnemonia is a VIRUS or BACTERIA. Anybody can get it.

Terrible fact checking, terrible reporting.

Aspiration pneumonia has a definite pattern, which is distinct from a community-acquired pneumonia. So which is which?

The doctor who examined her said it was community-acquired, not aspiration pneumonia.

The doctor who never saw her autopsy, never examined her body, made the diagnosis of aspiration pneumonia via long distance without seeing the patient.

But he has no experience on this case - he has had no access to the files of this case or the autopsy so his opinion is just that but so many people are taking what he has said over the official report.

You must be a teenager or barely out of your teens. Normal people spend most of their time with their families. It seems like her relationship with her mother and husband were very strong and close. I'd hardly call that weird. You, on the other hand.

I'm actually in my late 30s and I have my own family. You clearly did not see the interview. It wasn't about their closeness, it was the fact that they were close to the point of having no other outside social life. When Larry asked how Brittany's friends reacted to her death her husband basically said she did not have friends and at one point mentioned that she did not go out for an entire year. That is not normal. If you think it is, you may want to seek counseling, honestly.

Aside from that, the way he spoke about her was just creepy. You really had to see it.

P.S. I'm sorry, but I can't let it slide that I was insulted by someone with the grammar skills of a twelve year old. In the sentence "It seems like her relationship with her mother and husband were very strong and close. " "Relationship" is the subject and therefore the verb should have been "was" not were.

Why does everyone who hears the word "drugs" think illicit drugs? Prescription and OTC drugs used inappropriately, kill far more people in America every year than illicit drugs. Ms. Murphy may have simply been another victim of the erroneous perception that "if it comes from a pharmacy it must be safe."

If it comes from a pharmacy it is as safe, as to be expected. The problem is when people abuse the dosage.

It's not always about abusing dosage - there are many drug-drug interactions that people are not aware of when they take prescriptions. They may not get all of their meds at the same pharmacy so they don't get the same warning alerts that they would have if all of their medications were in one computer system.

RIP Brittany.

I know enema doesn't want to hear the risk factors for pneumonia. The use of acid-suppression drugs (PPI) was associated with a 30% increased risk for developing pneumonia and...

Proton pump inhibitors as a risk factor for Clostridium difficile

Proton Pump Inhibitors and Vitamin B12 Deficiency

The use of proton pump inhibitors has been associated with an increased risk of hip fracture

Examples of PPIs include Aciphex, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, and Protonix.

can you imagine treating a patient by shutting down their capacity to make stomach acid and expecting them to thrive?

Why is it that drug misuse and overdose kills so many celebrities? Duh? The sex scandals go to the athletes & politicians, but when it comes to drug misuse & overdose, it's always people in the entertainment industry on the front page. Why is that? Could it have anything to do with the obvious fact that these are the most narcissistic human beings on the planet and their entire lives are composed of indulging themselves with every creature comfort known to man. What happens when you've bought everything, done everything and been everywhere? You get bored, so you have to find SOME WAY to give you ass a ride. Answer: DRUGS! Oh I know, why not have another Awards Show? That will make them happy. They can walk down another Red Carpet, have their picture taken wearing the most ridiculous trash they can find and everyone will cheer! There's an Awards Show a week now because these egomaniacs just can't get enough of themselves.

Read the article, these were not illicit drugs, nor does it appear to be an overdose. Many deaths are caused by prescription drugs taken in accordance with instructions.

Blah blah blah blah. Why would your 'heart go out to' a complete stranger who engages in idiotic, risky, woe-is-me, I-m-so-troubled-I-must-take-drugs-to-cope behavior. You should all care as much as she seemed to care. Which apparently was very little. Me? My heart goes out to people in Haiti... Americans dying in a needless war... innocent victims of violence... etc. Now stop being so sappy.

But there is no evidence to support she was a drug taker, but evidence to support that she took medication to control a number of medical conditions including heart murmur, type 2 diabetes etc.

Your post is contradictory.

You say there is no evidence to support that she was a drug taken, then you say there IS evidence to support she took medication. What do you think medication is, if not drugs?!
