Model Abby Lee Kershaw Talks About Falling On The Runway, Being Thin (VIDEO)

First Posted: 04/12/2010 5:12 am Updated: 05/25/2011 3:30 pm

Abby Lee Kershaw talked to Australia's "Today Tonight" about the fast-paced life of a model and all it entails: thinness, nudity and outrageous catwalk looks. Kershaw knows firsthand about the dangers of fashion, having fallen on the runway several times and once fainting due to a super-tight corset. This year, she turned down the chance to walk in Alexander McQueen's show, refusing to stick her foot into his armadillo shoes. She said, "Hopefully [heel height] is going to come back down soon because health and safety regulations have got to come into play at some point."

Give me that "tough" job. Someone picks you up in a limo in the morning, they feed you water and carrots, they dress you, they do your make and hair and then ask you to stand still. Tough.

Congratulations to Abbey Lee for refusing to walk in those ridiculous, ugly shoes!

I'm sorry, but I will always hold a bit of contempt for the shallow superficiality of this world- and I am an art type. I just can't stand the blatant consumerism. GROSS.

Good for her for turning down those horrid shoes. Not only are they really ugly, they're dangerous as well.

I'VE BEEN OUTRAGED FOR DECADES... MODELS HAVE NO UNION. NO REGULATION. NO BENEFITS UPON RETIREMENT. NO RESIDUALS. NO NOTHING. WHEN I MODELED I ALWAYS THOUGHT OF FORMING A UNION, BUT, I'M NOT EQUIPPED TO INITIATE SUCH A BOLD ENDEAVOR.
IT NEEDS TO BE DONE... TO PROTECT THE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WILL DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING FOR FAME AND THE SPOTLIGHT

Walking in high heels might not be so dangerous if her bones weren't so brittle from malnutrition.

The people in the fashion industry live to glorify (or destroy) each other. Every time I pick up a fashion magazine nowadays (which is pretty much only when I'm sitting in a physican's waiting room), I just have to laugh at how out of touch they are with how real people want to look.

Their "haute' couteur" looks more like it belongs in Cirque du Soleil.

I don't think I could date a model. Because I love food and models have to "shun" food to earn a salary, it's a loser relationship!

Or a dancer! I dated a male (straight) ballet dancer for a very short period once, we never got to go out to dinner because he didn't eat! That one didn't last long....

You think the insurance would have paid to fix her teeth after the fall.

Um... I think that's intentional... you know, for all those men who prefer girls to women?

Sounds right to me, Mossyoak. Google says she's 22, I'd never believe it based on her face.

I don't know if OSHA is going to lobby for models causes anytime soon, I could be wrong.

If US or Aussie models tried to form a union, I would think fashion would just hire even more girls than they do already from developing nations that don't have unions for any labor category. Girls that have the current 'look', are just grateful for the work however hazardous, or whose parents pushed them into it to make money for the family.

Armadillo shoes are definitely f---in ugly. But the high fashion runway is about stunts, practicality went out the door decades ago.

Oh the dangers of falling on the runway from high-heeled shoes, and the injustice of it all! Maybe she should just go to work for the phone company.
