Endangered Species Condoms

TUCSON, Ariz. -- An Arizona-based environmental group that fights to protect endangered species plans to distribute 100,000 free condoms across the U.S. beginning on Valentine's Day.

The Center for Biological Diversity in Tucson says the promotion is meant to call attention to the impact of human overpopulation on endangered species.

The group will hand out six different condom packages with original artwork. People can also enter to win free condoms for life. Slogans on the packages include "Wrap with care, save the polar bear," and "Wear a condom now, save the spotted owl."

The center's Randy Serraglio says human overpopulation is destroying wildlife habitat at an unprecedented rate.

The endangered species condoms will be distributed in bars, supermarkets, schools, concerts, parties, and other public events.

Just wanted to note, since the artists are not mentioned in the article --- the artwork for this project was created by The Endangered Species Print Project, which you can check out at: http://endangeredspeciesprintproject.com

The Endangered Species Print Project offers limited-edition art prints of critically endangered species.
The number of prints available corresponds with the remaining animal or plant populations.

For example, only 45 Amur Leopards remain in the wild, so for this edition, only 45 prints will ever be made. A different organization, whose mission is to the ensure the survival of the species depicted, is chosen for each print. 100% of the sales of ESPP prints are donated to these conservation organizations.

i would love to see a global moratorium on reproduction. take 1-2 yrs where everyone agrees to stop breeding.

the planet is overpopulated. every social problem that exists is attributed to overpopulation.

not enough jobs = too many people
food too expensive = too many people demanding it
traffic = too many people driving
wars = too many people fighting over land
overcrowded jails = too many people
overcrowded schools = too many people
etc, etc.

we have enough people for a while. take a break already. freakin' rabbits.

Tyler, you are eloquently logical. How about adding climate change=too many people. Problem: politicians won't touch the very real overpopulation crisis with a 10 foot pole. They risk losing their religious fan base.

I agree that overpopulation lies at the root of so many global problems, and poses probably the greatest threat to the planet's future (remember Soylent Green?). But the problem with the moratorium idea lies in the fact that most of the immense population booms are occurring in developing nations, marginalized places; it's easy for those in affluent nations to forget these place where ideologies, poverty, lack of education, lack of health care, and militant violence all coincide to make large-scale birth control currently far from grasp. Those of us who have the time to actually consider the issue - because we aren't struggling to keep a family (a growing one, even) alive - need to take up compassion and help those to whom birth control is out of reach.

I'm sorry, people should not be having sex with owls -- even if they wear a condom.

(I'm either joking or I am Sarah Palin.)

A cute but misguided effort. I just double checked my textbooks. The birthrate in ALL developed countries, including the States, is under the 2.2 replacement level. Our population is growing through immigration. Perhaps they should fly to third world countries and pass out condoms if they are concerned about population growth. The exploitation of our environment has more to do with American lifestyle choices than our sex lives.

This is insanity. The Overpopulation Policy is an offensive against the population. The United States is underpopulated; we are in need of brain and manpower to lift the collapsing economy.

The collapsing operation of the monetary financier debt based market has many auxiliary components that facilitate the destruction of the United States. Overpopulation, Drug legalization, Free Trade, Open Borders, Perpetual War for Democracy, Educational and Media Indoctrination, the hatred of labor and unions, the elimination of intellectual and political opposition, have all contributed to our present debacle.

An assessment of the population's exposure to these issues and its' consequences hopefully will lead to a new perspective and an appreciation for the founding fathers vision of America.

The world as a whole is overpopulated.

the problem the US has is that, while we are overpopulated, the bulk of our population is approaching retirement or already retired from work. Therefore, they are consuming but not producing.

Now, before you start talking about Logan's Run, I have another, less vile solution: immigration.

There are people all the world over that would very much love to come to America and work. We need young people, if nothing else to do the work that will allow us to feed our old people. So, open the borders.

Anybody that wants to come and work hard, come on in. All we ask is that you respect our laws (we need to change the immigration laws to accommodate anybody and everybody that respects all the other laws), don,t mooch off the system till after you've put a little something into it, and have fun.

no it isn't.

people who think they can have as many kids as they want, and therefore demand more of the world's resources than another family, are offensive.

people having too many kids they can't afford, nor have time to raise appropriately, are offensive

RELIGIOUS ZEALOTS WHO DON'T SUPPORT THE USE OF BIRTH CONTROL, ARE OFFENSIVE.

Unfortunately, it actually is liberals who care who are willing to forgo reproduction for the good of the planet.

It's the welfare red-staters breeding like bunnies who would never consider closing their legs or stuffing it back in their pants for the benefit of anyone, including their own half-wit children.

Excellent idea.

Humans continue to overpopulate and r*pe the natural world...but we need to control other species numbers with culls??? Unbelievable and sickening. Human arrogance...truly astonishing.
09:12 AM on 02/12/2010
Couldn't agree more. Sometimes I even feel that human beings are some kind of mistake altogether. All that the majority of humans do is destroy. Think about it. And the majority is winning.

Really amazing that we "cull" (kill) the least offensive planet's inhabitants !

having or not having kids for political reasons is a lie anyway...those who don't want to have children anyway now can have a new bumper sticker for further self-congratulation
