Lost In Translation: When Subtitles Go Wrong (PICTURES)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 4/14/10   Updated: 5/25/11

Subtitles can guide you through a foreign film. They can also go horribly awry. The latter often happens when an English film is dubbed in another language and then re-subtitled. We don't know who's transcribing them, but we're thankful they don't have a grasp on the English language.

Borat's Concern

'Fart eye' is actually the only thing that makes sense here.

Actually, Anakin being made by the presbyterian church actually helps the prequels make more sense. Cause I still don't know what the frick went on in Episodes One and Two.

Have you seen funny? This IS funny!

Not to worry:

1) Most English language films don't contain much dialog anyway
2) You don't have to translate explosions, screeching tires, burps, passing gas and and gunfire
3) English language films are so bad that even the worst translation would actually improve the experience

You obviously don't get a lot of English language films in your neck of the woods.

"often happens when an English film is dubbed in another language and then re-subtitled."

pretty explanatory.

that still makes no sense

unless its being subtitled by non-english people for deaf people

and even that makes no sense

i mean, why subtitle a movie into english, if an english version already esists?

i still say, it has to be fake

One for deaf people. Also, some people (obsessive compulsive types, to be specific two different ex girl friends) like to watch english movies with sub-titles on because they want to be sure to understand every word.

I read about a kung fu movie whose subtitles included "Why have you moistened my head?"

Come on, none of these clips are as famous as the meme "Do Not Want", which comes from Starwars ep3.

I've seen it. I'll never forget how Faye Dunaway's character kept talking about business even when having sex.

Just watch Glenn Beck. "Network" is his playbook.

Personally, I would have thought that Darth Vader was made by the Calvinists.

We have a channel that overdubs American movies to Russian and uses English subtitles. Movies I've seen a dozen times take on a whole new meaning.

I thought "Angry is no more" was only interesting because the clock read 4:20. What's English got to do with it.

Being "made" by the Presbyterian church? Does that make him an elder who has to "rub out" methodists?
