Atlanta Anti-Abortion Billboards Cause Controversy, Say Black Children Are An "Endangered Species"

ATLANTA — The message on dozens of billboards across the city is provocative: Black children are an "endangered species."

The eyebrow-raising ads featuring a young black child are an effort by the anti-abortion movement to use race to rally support within the black community. The reaction from black leaders has been mixed, but the "Too Many Aborted" campaign, which so far is unique to only Georgia, is drawing support from other anti-abortion groups across the country.

"It's ingenious," said the Rev. Johnny Hunter, national director of the Life Education and Resource Network, a North Carolina-based anti-abortion group aimed at African-Americans that operates in 27 states. "This campaign is in your face, and nobody can ignore it."

The billboards went up last week in Atlanta and urge black women to "get outraged."

The effort is sponsored by Georgia Right to Life, which also is pushing legislation that aims to ban abortions based on race.

Black women accounted for the majority of abortions in Georgia in 2006, even though blacks make up just a third of state population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nationally, black women were more than three times as likely to get an abortion in 2006 compared with white women, according to the CDC.

"I think it's necessary," Cheryl Sullenger, senior policy adviser for Operation Rescue, said of the billboard campaign. "Abortion in the black community is at epidemic proportions. They're not really aware of what's actually going on. If it shocks people ... it should be shocking."

Anti-abortion advocates say the procedure has always been linked to race. They claim Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger wanted to eradicate minorities by putting birth control clinics in their neighborhoods, a charge Planned Parenthood denies.

"The language in the billboard is using messages of fear and shame to target women of color," said Leola Reis, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Georgia. "If we want to reduce the number of abortions and unintended pregnancies, we need to work as a community to make sure we get quality affordable health care services to as many women and men as possible."

In 2008, Issues4Life, a California-based group working to end abortion in the black community, lobbied Congress to stop funding Planned Parenthood, calling black abortions "the Darfur of America."

Pro-Life Action League Executive Director Eric Scheidler said a race-based strategy for anti-abortion activists has gotten a fresh zeal, especially in the wake of the historic election of the country's first black president, Barack Obama, who supports abortion rights.

"He's really out of step with the rest of black America," Scheidler said. "That might be part of what may be shifting here and why a campaign like this is appropriate, to kind of wake up that disconnect."

Abortion rights advocates are disturbed. Spelman College professor Beverly Guy-Sheftall called the strategy a gimmick.

"To use racist arguments to try to bait black people to get them to be anti-abortion is just disgusting," said Guy-Sheftall, who teaches women's history and feminist thought at the historically black women's college.

"These one-issue approaches that are not about saving the black family or black children, it's just a big distraction," she said. "Many black people don't know who Margaret Sanger is and could care less."

Watching tonight's news on TV, a reference was made to a minority that was now "ahead" of Blacks, with regard to having children. What they failed to mention was the number of these minority children that are now being supported by the local and/or federal government.

As of July 1, 2008, the estimated population of black residents in the United States, including those of more than one race, was 41.1 million (13.5 percent of the total population); an INCREASE of more than half a million residents from one year earlier. The projected black population of the United States is 65.7 million by July 1, 2050 (15 percent of the nation's total population). The population of African Americans in the United States has more than tripled during the 20th Century.

In other words, your "wiping out a race" assumption is not only preposterous but it's simply not true. At all. Try educating yourself before posting this fear-mongering tri.pe.

would you care to add that blacks (like other minority groups) are known for not complying with census taking so the estimate is possibly of and also could you add what sort of mortality odds blacks face and their average life expenctancies? also care to explain how the latino populations growth levels are much higher than ours even though much of the "conditions" which create the "need" for large famillies are found in both communities?

Nobody is forcing anyone on a cattle car here, so stuff the hyperbole.

The fact of the matter is that extra babies are a financial and social strain on a family and a community, and unwanted ones even more so. It's better to have fewer kids that you can properly feed, educate and look after, than a batch of kids with Third World options.

And abstinence doesn't work in a society where women don't have the right to say no. Taking away contraception and abortion rights is another way of telling women that they don't have a right to say no.

Anyone who has ever driven into Georgia will have seen the tons of other anti-abortion billboards....all featuring white babies and targeting a white demographic. If you google 'abortion billboards', you can see some of them .

Is the problem with this billboard just the language used, or the black child pictured on it?

I know people don't want to be told what to do with their bodies, but why the offense to a suggestion of another solution?

I didn't say the billboard WAS a solution.

I'm saying, other solutions do exist- birth control, adoption, etc. The group who created the billboard is suggesting other solutions to the abortion issue.

Maybe this needs to be a national referendum for women voters only to decide.
Why not? They're the ones directly affected, not men.

Why not just let the women decide?
The House and the Senatecould just simply ratify the women's decision as law.

Men had the vote for roughly 150 years before women could, you'd think we could just step aside on this one and let it be the *women's health issue that it is.

Simplistic as this approach is, think about it. It makes the most amount of sense.

In 2009, Georgia Right to Life released its Candidate Affirmation statement. Any political candidate who seeks an endorsement from the organization must sign the statement. The document reads:

"Whereas, the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, 'nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property, without due process of law, nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the law,' Georgia Right to Life PAC affirms the principle that the right to life is the bedrock upon which all other Constitutional rights are derived.

Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist and a racist xenophobe and Planned Parenthood (an institution Liberals love) is her legacy. Ignorant Blacks have accepted this institutional Trojan Horse into every Black Community in America.

The little, dirty truth is that some people, conservative mostly, are pro-choice because they can't stomach blacks multiplying. I have friends who have expressed these views. They are glad that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land because they see abortion as the ultimate way to keep blacks from invading our schools and neighborhoods. Same thing with Black violance. They couldn't care less as long as it is taking place in the ghettos where both victims and perpetrators are black.

P.S: I am personally pro-life. So, abortion is not for me. However, I am pro-choice as a matter of public policy. If a woman, no matter her race, wants to have an abortion, go ahead my dear :-)

I happened to be one of those "crazy" people who respect other people's opinions. No matter how disturbing they may seem to me, as long as it is not ILEGAL, I have no problem. So far, having negative racial feelings is not a crime, as long as you don't act upon them, ex. Harming people. My friends think what they think and they know how I think. They respect my opinion whenever I express it and I do the same with them :-)

Just yesterday, in these very pages, I read about a soldier who, with the help of the mother, water boarded his four year old daughter for not knowing her alphabet. For untold numbers of children, there are many things worse than never being born.

All children deserve to be born into a safe and loving home. If parents cannot provide that, they should never have a child. And while effective contraception is far better, abortion prevents many children from living horrific, poverty stricken or otherwise despised lives.

You cannot kill a soul. But you can prevent it from coming into the world destined to live a life of misery.

And finally, why is it, these people who scream the loudest about outlawing abortion, are the same ones who don't believe in head start programs, or school lunch programs for underpriviledged kids, or the CHIP healthcare program for poor kids? They scream about killing unborn babies, but dont give one damn about them after they are born.

So, if they dont care about children after they are born, what is their true agenda in trying to get abortion illlegalized? What are they really after?”

You don't get to decide what constitutes the basic tenets of liberalism. Furthermore, even if the freedom to control your reproductive organs was against these tenets, it wouldn't change the fact that we still have a right to do it.

Huh? Something tells me that the women who got pregnant and make a call for an abortion appointment knew exactly what was going on and were well aware of what they were doing and why. This is such a personal decision, I can't see anybody with an unwanted pregnancy decided to keep the baby anyway simply because there are a lot of abortions in their community. It's also highly insulting to say that these people are clueless, which I highly doubt that is the case.

Thankfully, you don't represent people of color in this country. The idea that you are the face of black intelligentsia is almost as ridiculous as the bile you're spewing. Women of color don't need anyone else deciding what is in our best interests. This includes you. We are perfectly capable of making up our own minds about whether we will continue a pregnancy. Those who want to take away our ability to choose are not our friends, allies or representatives. They are our enemy, regardless of what race they may be a part of. As my grandmother used to say, "They may be your color, but they're not your kind."

I received an email from Georgia Planned Parenthood about this last week. I have not actually seen these billboards yet (and I go all over ATL) but I will keep my eye out for them and complain to the billboard sales company. That's one thought.

This disgusts me on so many levels it's hard to articulate it. First, the quote from one anti-choice zealot: "They're not really aware of what's actually going on." Like black people are too stupid to realize what's happening in their own lives? Maybe what they know is there is not enough access to quality health care - INCLUDING FAMILY PLANNING - to prevent the need for the procedures? And of course heaven forbid we provide any health care or services after the baby is born - that doesn't fit in with the pro-fetus group's agenda.

The way these anti-choice people talk sounds so "benevolent master" to me - helping the black community because they just don't know what's good for them - it's beyond offensive.

Margaret Sanger may or may not have been about eugenics; I am personally not familiar with either Sanger or her work. Regardless, Planned Parenthood is itself not now, if it ever was, about eugenics.

You pro-fetus people are unbelievably nervy and ignorant.
