Evan Bayh Not Running For Re-Election

First Posted: 04/17/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:30 PM ET

Bayh

Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) confirmed on Monday that he will not be running for re-election in 2010, citing a overly-partisan climate in Washington.

The departure of Bayh, a two-term Indiana Democrat who has never lost an election either on the state or local level, leaves a gaping hole for national Democrats to fill. A top operative in the party told the Huffington Post that the decision was "last minute" and "personal," seemingly not driven by prospects of defeat.

"They polled last week and were way ahead of [Republican candidate Dan] Coats," the operative said. A recent Research 2000 poll had Bayh lead over Coats at a quite comfortable 20 points.

A name floated by the operative as a possible replacement for the Democratic seat is that of Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) a blue dog from Evansville who came to office in 2006 riding an anti-Republican wave. Ellsworth, however, lacks the statewide name recognition of Bayh, whose father served in the Senate before him. Moreover, he will have to move remarkably fast in order to get his name on the ballot. The deadline to file is this Friday but candidates have to have 500 valid signatures from citizens in Indiana's nine Congressional Districts to properly certify his or her candidacy.

And while the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has been working overtime to define Coats as a creature of Washington with a toxic past as a lobbyist the electoral deficit it now faces is more daunting.

Bayh held a news conference announcing his decision in Indianapolis Monday afternoon. Watch his remarks:

Earlier on Monday, the Indianapolis Star story reporting the retirement had more details on Bayh's decision:

"After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so in Congress has waned," he said.

"My decision was not motivated by political concern," he added. "Even in the current challenging environment, I am confident in my prospects for re-election."

"But running for the sake of winning an election, just to remain in public office, is not good enough," Bayh said. "And it has never been what motivates me. At this time I simply believe I can best contribute to society in another way: creating jobs by helping grow a business, helping guide an institution of higher learning or helping run a worthy charitable endeavor."

"Two weeks ago, the Senate voted down a bipartisan commission to deal with one of the greatest threats facing our nation: our exploding deficits and debt. The measure would have passed, but seven members who had endorsed the idea instead voted 'no' for short-term political reasons," he said. "Just last week, a major piece of legislation to create jobs -- the public's top priority -- fell apart amid complaints from both the left and right. All of this and much more has led me to believe that there are better ways to serve my fellow citizens, my beloved state4 and our nation than continued service in Congress."

The health care industry will see to it that he and his wife will be financially secure for the rest of their lives.
We must impose term limits and ban ALL financial contributions.

The History Channel will be running a segment on the Lifetime Accomplishments of Evan Bayh--it will run from 9:00-9:01 p.m. this coming Sunday evening.

While the talking heads filled the pages of the national papers and blogs with what this means for Obama, the Democrats, Republicans, the state of Indiana or the relative state of disrepair in our National dialogue, Bayh’s stepping aside seems rather a well thought out politically calculated gambit to reposition himself and his brand as there is no significant record of Bayh having accomplished anything of import during his time in the Senate, other than simply looking like The Great White Democratic Hope whom was at the top of the last two Democratic Presidential aspirants lists for second in command. Both did not pick him and for those who critique John Edwards or Joe Biden, you may want to ask yourself why. And it is especially interesting that he could not think of anything nice to say about Obama's olive branches to Republicans. ON LEADERSHIP while the country is going to hell in a hand basket, the Republicans and Bayh, all they can think about is gaming the system and repositioning themselves.

Well said.

This is actually good news... Dems need to find a true Progressive to run for Bayh's seat, not another Blue Dog.

Perhaps Evan Bayh and Sarah Palin should start a new party- the Party of Quitters.
They should get together with the Tea Party and together work diligently at destroying whatever is left of this country after 8 years of Cheney/Bush.
Or, Evan and Sarah should join Cheney and crawl back under Cheney's rock and leave the reparation of this Country in more positive hands.
NOSMAVAN.

Evan Bayh is not being quite truthful.

I live in Indiana. He was about to have a smear campgian like you never saw from the Republicans.
All because of his wife.

Where did Evan Bayh get his $13 million dollar war chest? None from me. Wish I could look that up.
He has been kowtowing to the Republicans for years and now they were about to skewer him

If he is so honest why did he not make this announcement in time for a new candidate to run. Someone who care for the citizens not the corporations. We do not need a Blue Dog Democratic candidate. Indiana voted for Obama. We can vote for someone who is not encumbered by corporations.

I hate all the tripe about how beneficial he was to the Democrats. I was very, very thankful he did not become Vice-President.

Fed up with "liberal bloggers?" What does that mean, Senator Bayh? Is it really too much to wish that you espouse at least some of the liberal ideals that your father championed? That you show at least a sampling of the integrity and fortitude that made Birch Bayh such an effective and much loved public servant?

That you actually be a democrat in deed as well as he is in denomination?

Enjoy your retirement. I have no doubt you will jump on the lobbying gravy train at the first opportunity.

Let him go his own way . He ran as a Democrat but stabbed us all in the back when he did'nt support Healthcare reform . I dont see how we as Americans can move forward without this important piece of legislature . The price of Health Insurance is out of control , eating up our pay checks and dragging down our economy . How is that so hard for our Elected officials to understand what a huge problem this is for the average working man and women in this great country .
So bye-bye Bayh . You are a Turncoat that let us all down . If you change your mind and decide to run again , please run as a Republican , at least then we will know that you are out to screw us .
I voted for you time after time thru your long public career , and then when we had a chance to put a stop to big Insurance ,YOU FAILED US . Idon't get it . So run away as fast as you can . GOOD FOR US . TAKE OUR MONEY AND RUN !!!!!!!!!!!

“Go into the highways and byways…”
Health Care Reform Will Bring Better Life To America--part 2
Send into America, volunteers and other workers, who will set the principles of Health Reform in their connection with President Obama,USA and those of America’s Leadership, vowed to appropriate Health Care to the improvised , middle-class, as well as every other American and the American family. Request that OFA messengers will go before every family and individual, online computer literate, in the trenches, the highways, byways, off liners, computer illiterates as well as the loners, who have found politics, an absolute, “no-no”. Encourage all America, that each stand to gain something, positive and progressive, for their fellow men and women, boys and girls, and see if the “breath of life” will not aptly return to America and the wide world. HERE’S HUMANITY!
HEALTH CARE REFORM WILL BRING BETTER LIFE TO AMERICA.—part 1 below part 2 next post
I say, with enthusiasm, Prosecute the Health Care Reform Bill, with tact and ability. Set to work the youth involvement with OFA, suggest strong communications and education of other young women and young men with the elderly/disabled in America. Combine Health Care Reform with the proclamation of bettering humanity, moving America to a more rational human society.
“Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Make regular, organized, strategic efforts to lift America out of the destructive level that “bought off” recent legislative members, oppressors and oppressor-agents, are using to convince and frighten America, and, into which they, who have resigned from America law and legislation, have fallen. Some, like, our former vice president, Cheney, have remained in this fallen and bitter state for many years and continue through “Hater” tactics to draw other legislators, congressional, who are distressed. Most resigning or resigned legislators feel they are without safe distress discharge circles. (see part 2)

More evidence of the fact that the "civil war" taking place in Congress is not only affecting the "common folk" but among the members themselves. Our country is in a crisis situation and all our government officials are willing to do is fight among each other to determine which Party can "run" Congress. The gridlock can only be broken by surgically removing the extreme right and extreme left diseased components of our Congress. Get rid of the old and bring in some new blood, individuals who are willing to do something for the People rather than for the Party. Whatever reasons for Bayh's decision to leave Congress, he is right about one thing: the political infighting in Congress is ruining our country and must be fixed. Let's start with the 2010 elections. People Not Party!

You don't get it, the Republicans have a strategy to not work with the Democrats at all. I wish Obama and the rest of you could get your heads out of the sand and see that. What good did it do to kowtow to Olympia Snow and make changes to suit her and then she stabbed them in the back.
The only way to gain the respect of bullies is to first punch (figuratively)them in the nose and then maybe they would sit down and talk. Think of all the "it is a trap" talk the past few days because Obama invited them to sit down and talk. You would have thought he invited them to a slaughter.

YOU WROTE: "Look at how Hillary voters were and still are treated on this blog and by Progressives in general ... I do not like being talked down ... I voted Democratic for my entire voting life. No longer... My vote was not even represented at the Democratic National Convention.... some of you left wing bloggers even dare to question why some of us believe that the Progressives took over the party?

ME TO YOU:
1. Hillary Clinton is and was a PROGRESSIVE. The difference between Clinton's platform & Obama's platform during the primary was thinner than tissue paper - meaning, both platform's were so similar it was hard to see any difference between them.

2. You are WRONG when you imply that "SUPPORTERS" of Hillary are being called names - that is false. What happened is Person A defends their candidate and Person B disses person A's candidate & touts their own candidate even in PRIMARY elections ... it's always been that way.

3. The platform of the Teabagging GOPers are AGAINST the working man and AGAINST equal rights ... the democrat platform has ALWAYS been PRO-workingman and PRO-Equal rights -thus NO WAY could a REAL Dem EVER vote for a GOP for any federal constitutional office - NO WAY!

I do NOT think you were ever a Hillary supporter - I think your comments prove you to be a TEABAGGER trying to CON readers of this blog. Too bad if you don't like MY opinions about

YOU WROTE: Have you ever seen so many rats jumping from the Obama ship?

ME TO YOU

What is your comment about the 30 Republican Congressional elected leaders who are also 'retiring' & not seeking re-election?

30 republicans 'jumping ship" - wow! that's more than the dems.
11:19 AM on 02/16/2010
Republican seats are safe. Democrats are in trouble in all of their retirement seats except for 2or 3. Have you not been keeping up with how this election season has gone and how it is shaping up? Democrats are in big trouble. Even the Democrat consultants and poll takers will tell you that. There is a good chance Democrats could loose both houses of Congress.

So Bayh isn't "going Palin" because he might lose, but because he's a completely ineffectual legislator who, by his own admission, failed miserably at passing a jobs bill or creating a commission to do work constitutionally ascribed to the Congress. Thanks for clearing that up.

Notice that he didn't cite among those "frustrations" causing him to quit, his significant assistance in stalling and perverting health care reform. Apparently that particular congressional failure is an accomplishment. Any bets on what where he might catch his next free ride?

I say "next free ride" because this guy is just the latest poster boy for the insidious corrosive effect of nepotism in politics. We ought to have at least learned from the wretched experience of W that the offspring of pols are nearly always one-off, weaker dullards than their parents, without whose success and connections their progeny would perish in justifiable obscurity. Their floundering is unsurprising but it takes a special kind of arrogance to blame the job for one's inability to perform it.
