Men everywhere, in every culture, pursue women, often inappropriately. Women in most cultures do not give their phone number to any man they have just met. Why do these women think it's OK to give their phone numbers to total strangers and then act surprised when these men call them on the assumption that they must be looking for some action? Ask yourself, if you're an American woman checking out a singles bar, do you give your number to any and every guy there? How is the situation different in India? This article is just ludicrous and makes no point whatsoever except to invoke "scary brown man" fears among white women, like they don't already exhibit enough of that.

When you go to another country, you behave as the people of that country do. You know, like in the old adage, "When in Rome, do as Rome does." There's a reason that saying has passed into the common wisdom. Thus: ask yourself, would any Indian woman give her telephone number to men she meets through a social network? Highly unlikely. Therefore go thou and do likewise. Jeesh!

Huffington Post editors should have better judgement than to publish and showcase this article. Since similar stories can be written about many other foreign countries with different and changing cultures, it is inappropriate for Huffpo to single out India and present Indian men, who are on the whole well behaved people, in a bad light.

Your article selection of articles on India are almost all negative towards India and its people. That's regrettable and should be changed in the future.

I agree.....the India section of HuffingtonPost has the least relevant stories. Most of the featured articles rely on shock value and ignorance rather than actual issues.

Disagree.What real issues?You want to talk about maoism?Pathetic governance?lack of foreign policy?infanticide?
Stop talking as if you own India.I am Indian and I would like to see an and to journalism that only glorifies India.

One solution might be to not give your phone number to every guy you meet.

I was with her until she said, how people talking about "Lower caste" wonen. Then I knew she is a fraud. Not that what she says is untrue...but she has an agenda and complete exageration.

Go away evangelical christian.

Freenation below is wildly exaggerating, but I thought Hannah makes some good points in her post. The idiotic "caste" plug comes from someone called Sameera Khan; my experience with big cities in India is that, due to their metropolitan and inter-state nature, hardly anyone can tell a stranger's "caste" from looks alone. So it's mostly a bogus claim.

As a general rule, I do advise women visiting any poor/developing country such as India (with a free country but not a Western-style law enforcement structure) solo to take extra precautions to protect themselves. Be on guard, but perhaps not be so excessively paranoid so as to ruin the entire visit.

Are you speaking as an Indian? Because most Indians know, just from looking at other Indians, and by their names and their accents, what their place in the social structure is. It's a very old culture, with some 7,000 years of recorded history weighing down every interaction, every scene. There are many inexpressibly beautiful things about the country and the culture (as with every country and culture), and many unattractive things also. However, in terms of hitting on foreign women, Indian men are not the worst by a long shot. Try traveling in Northern Sumatra for some literal, as well as figurative, hitting on.

right on the money, in India if you are a foreigner girl and you talk with the local, 99.99% of the chance he will assume that you are hitting on him and will ant you to take it to the next level...
