WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama, defending his economic stimulus plan on its first anniversary, is dispatching his Cabinet across the country to try to calm an anxious public.

At the same time, Democratic operatives on Tuesday highlighted a series of instances of Republican officials praising or taking credit for stimulus programs despite criticizing the legislation when it was being debated last year.

For instance:

Minn. Gov. Tim Pawlenty: "Nearly one-third of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty's (R) final budget proposal would rely on $387 million in federal stimulus money... according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Pawlenty opposed passage of the economic stimulus legislation early last year telling Bloomberg it was 'largely wasted' and 'misdirected.'"

-- Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell: "Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is now offering effusive praise for $24 million in federal funds that allowed him to establish an office of Health Information Technology and to fund a program helping Virginia doctors transition to electronic medical records. Just one problem - he thinks the government shouldn't have spent that money to begin with."

-- Republican Members of Congress: "Democrats, stung by criticism of their $787 billion economic-stimulus plan, are targeting Republicans who have attacked the program and then lobbied to get money for their districts. More than a dozen Republican lawmakers supported stimulus-funding requests submitted to the Department of Labor, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Forest Service, in letters obtained by The Wall Street Journal through the Freedom of Information Act."

A weeklong push to highlight the stimulus program's first year was starting with a Tuesday trip by Vice President Joe Biden to hard-hit Saginaw, Mich., to tour a small business, a jobs training program and a solar factory that all received Recovery Act dollars. The vice president, who has led the administration's efforts to implement the stimulus plan, is expected to again push Congress to pass a jobs bill to help some of the 8.4 million people who have lost their jobs since this recession began.

Obama's fellow Democrats planned to tout programs putting people back to work under the $787 billion spending bill. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was touring a medical center in Atlanta on Tuesday; Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was promoting stimulus projects in Virginia and Texas the same day.

In all, senior administration officials are scheduled to visit 35 communities before Friday to counter Republican claims the massive deficit-spending program has failed. Obama plans to surround himself at the White House on Wednesday with people who have jobs because of the stimulus plan, then travel to Colorado and Nevada.

House Democrats are also launching a coordinated campaign to highlight the projects begun or completed and jobs saved or created district by district. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will hold an event on Wednesday, and her office is encouraging members to be aggressive in taking credit for the spending, which is popular at home in the specific, if opposed in Washington in general.

"The Recovery Act has pulled America back from the brink of economic disaster and has helped create or save about 2 million jobs while providing a tax cut to 95 percent of Americans," said Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami. "Even Republicans, who continue to publicly oppose the Recovery Act while in Washington, proclaim its success in their congressional districts."

Obama's political team believes the bricks-and-mortar projects across the country could help Democrats stave off emboldened Republicans and their attempts to reclaim majorities in Congress. Although voters have soured on the stimulus spending, individual components have fans across party lines.

The tax cuts Democrats included in their bill have the backing of 70 percent of the public, according to a CNN poll last month. Another 80 percent support the infrastructure investments, such as the water projects Environmental Protection Agency chief Lisa Jackson plans to tout in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday.

Even so, 56 percent of the public opposes the broad plan, according to the CNN poll.

Biden is expected to give Obama a report Wednesday assessing the stimulus' effects.

I saw this part of the Obama Administrations Powerplay developing, when the states were instructed that they were to receive stimilus funds, regardless of protests from the legislators and governors who did not agree, and directions were being placed on how the States were to spend their stimilus money.

A couple of brave states, and cities, refused to accept the funds ("Bait"). Some of us respected them, and felt for the sacrifice they were making through conviction and honesty.

But Obamas administration knew, very well, that due to the desparate state of the economy, the majority of the leaders of these States would accept the "Bait", regardless.

That "bait" comes at no polical cost to those leaders who agree and align with him.

As a partison powerplayer, he knows the hippocrisey of his bipartisan campaign promises, that had alot to do with his election victory.

And that, during the progression of his agenda, he would need some good material by which to discredit the inevitable truth seers who could expose him.

And so,...

Now comes his first big "CHECK MATE!"

"You Hippocrits!! You took the money and you spent it!!!"
"Yet, you say you don't agree with me, and can not support my beloved Senates and Congresses bills."
" Have you no respect!!!"
Yes. Humbly I must say. We have played into the hands of a ruthless Socialist powerplay.

This actually is a successful and typical powerplay that has been run by many Socialist revolutionaries (and Hitler).

Yes. I admit that I am being dramatic... I am very far from being a "crackpot".

I am elderly enough, liberal enough, and intelligent enough to know that you are sold on this man, and you are totaly sold on his administrations propoganda. ( I voted for this man, as very many like me did)

I know that it is a waste of my time and breath, to think that you're eyes, ears or mind would be open to trying to, at least, temporily try something on from a different point of view.

President Obama claims that republicans won't play across the aisle is bogus. His invitation to do so purely a manipulative, partison, political ploy.

Much like an ancient witch trial, by which the supposed witch could never win;

Obama: "Will you work with us across the aisle?"

Rep: "Yes!"

Obama: "Will you work with us, and accept the current heathcare
plan as it is?"

Rep: " I can not accept the (interupted by Obamas next line)

Obama: "Then you are not willing to work across the Aisle!"
Then Obama releases a statement, judging that it is the republicans, not the democrats, who are unwilling be bi-partisan. After all, he and his party offered the "Fig Leaf", and the republicans did not accept it, unconditionally. He, Pelosi and Reid determine that any offer of conditions, equals total non-acceptance.

In fact, Pelosi should be proud of her little puppet. (as she grins with power mongering delight)

Obama is quickly loosing the trust of the American people. He'd be very wise to step into the midst of the aisle, and start calling out both sides.

Sorry fellow Progressives/relatively left commenters, but proof of hypocrisy has not, does not, and will not defeat American conservatism -- at least it will never weaken the resolve of their base, nor shave a few million votes come midterm. Why is this so? Why does proof of wrongdoing and duplicity not sway their voting decisions? Working class conservatives (who have no personal stake in capital gains tax policy, nor concerns about Yuan devaluation, nor financial product regulation, nor byzantine tort reform and insurance industry practices, nor any useful opinion on Dept. of Energy or Education structuration) always end up voting along with the old boys and yacht clubbers for the same type of representative whose duty it is to serve the latter voters (the elite deciders) and not the former (the working(/struggling middle) class conservatives. They do this NOT because they have studied the candidates' political tendencies and alignments, nor because they know which poli-sci graduate professors the candidates idolized. They vote again and again for people that ultimately want to see them wind up in easy to manage rural, suburban, and exurban ghettos, with no benefits or safety nets, walled off from GDP contributing mega cities BECAUSE the candidates always walk, talk, and act like their fathers -- and sometimes mothers. AFFECT. That is all it comes down to. Say something horse-sensical and act like the voter's strict dad or coach or pastor (or browny-baking mother) you are in.

The republican father figure syndrome. I have heard of it. I think these people are just too weak to be on their own and want someone to lead them. Racism is also a big part of what is happening today for those that were silient during the Bush administration have no right to speak up now but they feel justified in railing against the black guy in office.

I have clicked on the links that you gave to back up your so-called facts - and the Bureau of Labor Statistics web site didn't say a word about any jobs being lost in ANY sector. In fact, It says at the third paragraph with the title "At The Editor's Desk" that "The number of unemployed persons DECREASED to 14.8 million, and the unemployment rate FELL by 0.3 percentage point to 9.7 percent". The Bureau only stated that the number of LONG TIME unemployed has went up, when you click on and read the full text at the bottom.

So if what you claimed about unemployment going up instead of down despite the stimulus is wrong, then everything you posted is probably wrong, too. Then you are deliberately spreading misinformation to support your wingnut beliefs. Even if what you said was true, then it's still better than the many more jobs that were lost before now.

Didn't you think that someone would take a look at your links to see if they were right?
Well, I guess not. Maybe you thought that no one would bother just cos you posted them. So this destroys your credibility, and you cannot be believed! Especially if you could be using talking points from False News!

You will have to go into the links, not just read the front page side bars, the stats are there, I went into the links to read the actual data. There are no cliff notes for this site. That is why Politicans can quote whatever they want, as most Americans will not take the time to read the actual reports.

The 60-vote threshold is due to the GOP's plan to stop the elected majority from governing in any substantive way.
The Republicans are quite willing to make the nation fail in order to regain power.

Sorry it took so long to respond to your ridiculous post...I was saving or creating a pot of coffee.

Unfortunately for the dims, this is how it works in the Senate. When you had the super majority you didn't know what to do with it. I can understand your desperation in wanting to change the rules now that it's working against you...good luck with that.

Come on folks, I hate to say it but the right is just not happy with a 1/2 black president. They never will be. It shows from the inane attempts of the right wing posters here attempting to make a point but falling short continually. Sounds like being on the playground at grade school..."na na na na na nah!!!"

When Obama won the election there were old Christian white people passing out all over the country. When we all come to grips with who we love and who we hate as a race; can be honest truly honest about it with each other; and can also state your biggotry without embarrassment, we'll all be better off. Then we'll really know who is who...

Everyone tip toes around the race issue anymore. No one can admit to their shallow ideas regarding blacks because they'll be seen as ignorant, and they don't want to offend their black friends either! It's really pathetic sometimes. I live in Western PA, and any sane person here can tell you we have plenty of closet biggots among us. Quick to say the "N" word in private, but a equal opportunity supporter at work each day!

Now as for me, I hate everybody equally! You ALL make me sick at times...but I still love you!!! LOL!!!

No, I was talking about good ol' white, supposedly Christian GOP voters.

And I'm sorry, but I do think this country still has race issues. I base this on experience, I see two faced people every day where I live. I hope you live somewhere where that is not the case.

Thanks!

It is very easy to spot the racists. Anyone born before 1970 knows the signs and the game. This is Jim Crow all over again. A lot of us did not go along with it the first time and will be even meaner in handling it this time. Mark my words the racist tactics will backfire and cause a lot of pain.

I don't agree. First of all to be a leader there must be someone to lead.

Congress is capable of being led...on either side. Congress is broken.

You need someone to lead to be a leader. When your fellow countrymen let you down, as Congress has done the President, then that's what the deal is.

I don't think the President should have to fight so hard for a little bit of cooperation. Fair is fair, and your assessment that he was ok at the start but now is "President Passive" is just out of touch with what is real.

Obama stimulus failed. Someone needs to start documenting the many Democrat excuses. One of my favorites, "well only a third (pick the low fraction you like best) has been spent so that's why there are no results". What geniuses wrote the legislation which by Obama and Democrats own insistence, doesn't spend the money quickly enough to make any real reduction in unemployment? Obama and the Democrats!

Truth is only a third has been spent. If all had been spent you would be complaining about that.

Here chew on this:

Statistical special pleading occurs when the interpretation of the relevant statistic is "massaged" by looking for ways to reclassify or requantify data from one portion of results, but not applying the same scrutiny to other categories.

That's all you got a weak fallacy.

YA know I have been watching this post, on and off all day and i have seen some strange comments on here all day long. And i have to say the ones that get my eye are the ones that just don't make any sense what so ever and those come from the right. THe right today seems to have a lack of critical thinking on it's part, How can you say it was good? Just look at the last 30 years of our country, In that time republicans have systematically taking apart the finance industry controls and then we had a melt down of wall street and then they blame Obama, and you want us to forget about history and to fallow you blindly, SIR I SAY NOT I will fallow knowledge, not fear.
