hey, nyc is a luxury product as our beloved mayor-for-life said.

The MTA has me on the verge of leaving my home of 31 years. I can barely afford to get to work after the last hike. One of the reasons I love living here is not having to own a car. Please, stop.

Don't worry. As soon as the fares are raised, a surplus worth hundreds of millions will be announced. That's how Transit Authority management operates. Of course, there will be no returning to the previous fee schedule - that's never happened and never will.

Walk everywhere you can and cab to where you can't.

You're right, but the surplus will be used for Executive raises!

paying more for less. the mta service has gotten worse and worse over the years. the attitude from the employees in the subway is the worst along side any city office. the stations are filthy, the cars stink. the N and W are late and slow 99% of the time. i am fortunate to have a car so that i dont have to deal with them on the weekends. 2.60 USD a ride is way too much for this crappy service but of course we do not have a say on this. who got a 30% raise this year? and yet our city wants a 30% hike. they have no shame.

I've lived in Manhattan for 22 years and the cost of a ride on our PUBLIC system is disgraceful. I'm not unprivileged but when a person making minimum wage (7.25 an hour) has to pay an entire work hour wages per day (after taxes) just to commute to a crappy minimum wage job something is wrong.

Most people making substantially more would be extremely pissed off if five hours of their workweek went towards simply paying for their commute.

Bloomberg is such a privileged crook who muscled his way into a third term and doesn't give a hoot about anyone making less than $250K a year.

you can go with this or you can go with that

Everyone wants something for nothing in NYC. The proposed $2.50 per ride is still a GREAT deal considering how far one can travel in NYC. Let's use some common sense and be realistic.

Somebody has to pay for employee pensions and fat cat MTA salaries...

Hey man, it costs money to sit around all day.

God forbid the heads of the MTA should stop giving themselves big raises. They have some nerve the trains are packed - the F TRAIN IS THE TRAIN FROM HELL .They should pay us to ride it. Weekends the trains are always out of service and the buses that replace them are slow you can walk faster
MTA is in need of an overhaul fast

Ironically what was designed to be a democratic transportation system in a city with a range of economic classes is anything but democratic...could this be the intention behind further hikes ?

THe subway which I've been riding since age six, is such an unpleasant and vile experience now. If we saw the money go towards improvement in service and stations this would justify the fare hikes. Unfortunately we are not getting a system as beautiful and efficient as Madrid's or Barcelona's.MTA is a money pit and their employees seem to be trained to be rude and unhelpful.

THe saving grace is the bus system in Brooklyn not Manhattan. Manhattan busdrivers are real hardasses. Bklyn bus drivers are tough but humane; I've seen a lot of kindness on the part of these drivers.

I used to take Metro North all the time. It was inexpensive and it's a quick, easy trip from 125th Street up to Westchester County where I have lots of friends and relatives.

But now it's cheaper to drive, so I drive.

Good! The people using it should pay the full cost of the service.

But they are not. They are actually paying for the MTA payroll which is spiraling out of control. Conductors are taking home over 100k for unskilled labor. Teenagers hijack these trains and conduct them without incident, this is not rocket science. Yet they wish to be paid as if it were. The maintenance workers bill the city for 8 hours when they actually work 3 and a half. The TWA is the most corrupt union in the city, I venture to say even worse than the PBA.

We should have subsidized public transit -- which our cousins in Europe enjoy. It works for the benefit of all.

absolutely.

This is why I now drive a car virtually everywhere in NY. I rarely have to go to Manhattan so it is a bit easier for me than most to make this switch, I do commute all over Brooklyn and Queens however. The rising fares are bad enough but the decline in service and complete lack of decorum on the part of passengers has reinforced my decision. It could be such a good system, what a pity.

It's actually cheaper for me to drive into the city, especially when I'm going to an area with a fair amount of street parking. That, and I don't have to deal with all the drunks on the LIRR.
