Dodd: Filibuster Reform Is "Foolish", "I'm Totally Opposed" (VIDEO)

Dodd

There are a whole host of obstacles preventing Democrats from passing filibuster reform in the Senate. One of them is fellow Democrats.

On Wednesday morning, retiring Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) threw a big wrench in the plans put forth by his Senate colleagues to restrict the minority party's ability to stop or slow legislative activity.

"I'm totally opposed to the idea of changing the filibuster rules," the Connecticut Democrat said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe". "I think that's foolish in my view. You can write all the rules you want. At the end of the day if the chemistry isn't there [it won't work]."

A lion of the Senate and a leading voice within his party, Dodd's remarks are inherently protective of the institution he's set to leave following the 2010 elections. But they don't exactly jibe with emerging sentiment within the Democratic Party. Currently there are two proposals being discussed that would change or even fully eliminate the filibuster's use. As high a figure as Majority Whip Dick Duribn (D-Ill) has offered his support for seeing filibuster reform enacted.

Those plans, however, would require more than a simple majority if voted on anytime other than the beginning of the next Congress -- a margin that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who asserted 67 votes are needed, has suggested won't materialize. Dodd's comments confirm what a long shot this is.

Asked by the "Morning Joe" crew what could be done to make the Senate more productive, Dodd suggested that fewer trips home would go a long way towards producing comity among the chamber's members.

"In the past you have one or two trips home during a year that were paid for by the government," he said. "Today you can go home every day if you want if paid for by the government as long as you're doing business back in your congressional district or state."

Mr Dodd it is time for you to go. If you support the filibuster then you must also support high school kids pulling the fire alarm or phoning in fake bomb threats to cover up the fact that they haven't done their homework. Your stance is harmful Mr. Dodd and you cannot be gone soon enough.

One thing is looking up for me. No matter who wins in the Senate from Connecticut, I don't have to listen to this east end of a horse going west comer this time next year.

simple solution. If Republicans are abusing Filibusters, than Democrats should abuse Reconciliations and get things done.

Republicans would do it if they were in reverse position, lets get off this high horse and play dirty. Cry me a river about senate civility and bi-partisanship. GET THINGS DONE ALREADY.

I don't care if Dems lose in 2010 , if they get liberal agenda passed and into law that is all that matters. JAM ALL OF IT DOWN AND IN A HURRY!!

Dems lost seats after Civil Rights Legislation and we live in a better place now. Pass Cap and Trade, Public Option Real Health Care Reform, Employee Free Trade Act, Serious Wall Street reform with Reconciliation.

Grow a Pair of Balls and do what's right already and if Dodd doesn't like it he can sit on a tack

Who cares what Dodd thinks? He'll be gone soon, and can give his opinion when he's over on K Street.

It would be good to see Dodd replaced by a representative who actually passes progressive legislation.

Getting rid of the liars club supramajority agreement by Senators to make themselves more special than the Constitution stipulates is a good move. The Supreme Court has already ruled that all it takes to change any and all Senate rules is a simple majority vote and a backbone. The backbone is required to speak the phrase "point of order" to remind the Senators of the Constitution which they are sworn to uphold.

Rational ??? He will be gone at the end of this year and the filibuster is a joke.... all one of them has to do is mention it and it is completely ignored and Reid goes into Cloture mode...

If someone wants to filibuster they should have to stand in the well on the house floor and speak until he is ready to drop from exhaustion ....

The filibuster should not be allowed to be used but once a year, then it should be gone through with ... not this fake thing that has been going on for the last year and a half... it's a joke, just holds up progress in getting the work for the people done...

The filibuster is unconstitutional. But, Senator Dodd does not care about that. He is like so many others senators. Just preserve the archaic rules of the Senate, so we can have year after year of obstruction and ineffectiveness. The U.S. Senate is a broken institution and needs to be reformed. Dodd, himself, is retiring and that is good. He has been sold out for years to the Banking industry.

Bayh-Bayh, Dodd... My mistake, bye-bye, Dodd.

Yup. Change we can believe in.

Obama should publicly come out against individual Senate holds on nominations and on filibuster reform.
