Shaun White's Private Halfpipe: Secret Red Bull Superpipe VIDEO

First Posted: 04/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:35 PM ET

Shaun White's private halfpipe is a massive snowboarding superpipe that was built in late 2009 in Silverton, Colo. by Red Bull, one of his major sponsors.

According to Fourth Place Medal, the "one-of-a-kind" superpipe spans 550 feet and is situated in a 12,000-foot mountain. Shaun White's web site says that the superpipe's construction required "30 heli-bomb dropped avalanches" and "8,000 lbs of steel."

When he first saw it, White thought it looked like a "field of flowers with a tank in the middle of it."

Scroll down to watch a video of the private halfpipe.

Yeah that is one sweet lookin' pipe in a beautiful location. But as their website states they did a large amount of avalanche control to be able to build it. It will only be buried again after the next storm cycle. They'll have too throw charges again before they can rework it. Did they drive a machine with a pipecutter in there or did they fly it in under a Sikorsky? Yeah that's a lot of money thrown at something that obviously makes a lot of money. Red Bull has they image market for xtreme sports in the bag. They built the bag. They own they bag. The athletes are some of the best and the events that they host are intense and amazing but I still can't take them seriously.

A look at Shaun White's "private pipe" sounds very blue.

HOW can an athlete have access to this type of facility (accessible by helicopter only) and still be considered an "amateur?"

I guess it helps when you come from the kind of family wealth that lands you in the same neighborhood as Tony Hawk. No wonder this is called the "Whiter Olympics," who else can afford to ski and snowboard all year?
