The Difference Between Letterman And Leno (VIDEO)

First Posted: 04/22/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:35 PM ET

Just because all the hoopla surrounding the Leno/Conan drama has died down doesn't mean jokes at Jay's expense can't still be made. While it could've been a bit that didn't make the cut last month, Letterman opened his monologue Friday night by explaining the difference between himself and Leno. It all boils down to their modes of transportation.

So is Leno.

What I find most telling about this whole debacle is what I find to be the real reason a late night show succeeds or fails. It's all about lead in. I think people tend to stay on one channel and watch their "must see TV", a couple or several hours of one channel. Jay succeeded all those years, I think, because he had the great 10:00 lead in: ER, Law & Order, etc. Conan failed because of his lead in, which was mmm...Jay Leno. remember all the NBC affiliates were the ones who turned the tide on changing the line-up, they were losing viewers at 11:00 because Jay was a bad lead in, and consequently Conan suffered as well. Everyone was watching all the CSI's and what have you at 10:00, watching the CBS news at 11:00 and staying on for Letterman. Conan would have done much better by having the Law & Order lead ins (there are certainly enough of them!), but Leno will do fine as long as the 10:00 lead in is successful. If not, not enough people will watch.

The King of Late Night is Craig Ferguson. He's funnier than Letterman (whom I love) & all the guys on ABC & NBC combined.
If you can't stay up to watch his show, it is available every day on YouTube in easy to digest segments.

Jay is clearly better than any other talk show host in the 21st century. He's hillarious, loved cars, good at immitating Governator and all his headlines segment are mirthful to hear.

Go Leno.

Mirthful to hear? Aw tell the nurse in the nursing home that you want to stay up late and surely she will let you watch Leno.

...one of them bangs interns?

I wonder how many people toggle back and forth between Letterman and Leno. Mostly a comedian constructs his own audience, so it's not surprising that most people that like Leno don't like Letterman and vice-versa. In other words, like the man said, this will never be solved.

I wonder if either are as funny as

David is a better interviewer than Jay. Jay irritates me with his stupid animal antics. He is so predictable. He also annoys me when ever a Brit or Aussie comes to the show and he does a horrific immitation of their accent, especially guests who have been on his show many times. He does the same routine...Jay, cut it out! It's not funny! I am also tired of Jaywalking and that other game he plays with people on the street. Yes, we all know how ignorant these people are of basic American history....we got the message...it's boring...okay? Stop making celebrities of these morons. And that perennial 'intern guy' isn't a bit past his internship? He's another one who is not funny. And, please! Kevin Eunbanks, do, yourself a favor, go on the road like you promised because you suck as a band leader and you need to just record your music. Conan and David have the only fun band leaders, and Jimmy Fallon has The Roots Band, they are good. I miss Conan. I hope he gets a cable show or does a travelling show.

The difference is just, 'different strokes for different folks'. Everybody likes what they like. By insulting others doesn't mean you're more intelligent then the next.

Dave is a MUCH tougher interviewer for sure. You can argue whether or not Leno should be asking hard hitting questions as opposed to tossing softballs he always goes with considering the type of show it is, but there's no question that doing Leno is fairly risk free for any public figure. Letterman might just put you on the spot and make you sweat. For that alone, I'll always be in Dave's camp.

Depends. One difference is talent. The other is morals.

If you liked Bob Hope then you'd probably like Jay Leno. Hope was a bore the last 50+ years of his life. Most of that time Hope was a reader of out-dated, unfunny, poorly delivered jokes. That's Leno. Dave has his moments, but Jon Stewart and Colbert... they are funny.

Watching carp is a bit like watching goldfish, only more so.
