Crist: Stimulus Has Created Jobs, I Don't Regret Hugging Obama

Crist

Florida Governor Charlie Crist won't win over many of his conservative critics with his latest move -- declaring emphatically that the president's stimulus has created tens of thousands of jobs in his state and expressing "not one iota" of regret for working with Obama (indeed, hugging him) on the jobs-creating proposal.

Appearing outside the White House on Monday, the Florida Republican Senatorial candidate pushed back against his GOP critics -- notably Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) -- who have declared that the stimulus has not created one single job in America.

"It is not the case in Florida -- we accepted the stimulus money; all of my fellow governors did," Crist said. "I think it was the responsible and right thing to do for the people and it puts people above politics. In Florida alone, for example, it created or maintained at least 87,000 jobs; 27,000 of those jobs are educators and teachers throughout the state. I dare say what the impact would be throughout the state if those teachers were out of work, unable to put bread on the table of their families. This is necessary and it relates to job creation."

Asked later if he has any regrets over appearing alongside Obama at a presidential visit to Florida to tout the stimulus's benefits, he replied: "None whatsoever."

"In fact, I talked about it this morning," Crist explained. "I don't apologize for it at all. It was the right thing to do. We needed the money. It saved 87,00 jobs for our state. I was raised to respect the presidency of the United States. And the man who occupies the office now and I don't agree on everything, but by golly when we agree on something, and that means helping the people of the state I was elected to govern, I'm going to be there and I'm going to thank him."

Crist has been pilloried by his conservative critics, including primary challenger Marco Rubio, for embracing Obama, both metaphorically and physically. He said the heat he got for that moment doesn't bother him at all. "Not one iota," he said. "[Rubio's] wrong and I'm right."

Not all prominent Republican governors were as gracious to the White House. Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.), refused to answer repeated questions about whether the stimulus has created a single job in his state, merely telling the Huffington Post that he philosophically opposed the package.

"The president's own economists said it was going to keep unemployment below eight percent -- it hasn't done that," he said. "Again, I disagreed with the stimulus last year. I didn't think it was the right approach for the country."

I have read many of your comments. One way to put Crist ahead of Rubio we as Floridians can do is to change party and vote for Crist in the GOP primary and change your party again.

To the South Crist is an Expletive-Lover, let's just say it for what it is. The GOP Base is pro-white, how dare he TOUCH Obama or any other Brown person. Rubio will not win, he is old-cuban Republican. Hard core-wish they were white type. Alot of people don't know Rubio is Cuban, once the GOP base finds out it's over. You think these GOP base people want a Cuban running Florida? LOL. They will eat it and vote for Crist.

too bad really. Crist is a good guy. And, it's sad that folks would rather see mostly minorities lose their jobs, just because they h8te the President. Really sad in this day and age so much r@cism.

As a lifetime resident of Florida I've lived through a lot governors and hurricanes. Jeb Bush as governor did two things very well.
1. He played partisan politics as well as anyone that came before or will come after him. I personal hold him responsible for Katherine Harris and the three ring circus that put GWB into office in 2000.
2. His response to hurricanes. Every governor whose state is prone to hurricanes should be required to attend a class held by Jeb Bush. Call it his Hurricane Preparedness and Response Class.
I was caught in Miami during Hurricane Andrew...what a nightmare. No help, no HELP. We were on our own for days because not only was the federal government unprepared but so was our state. A state prone to hurricanes was unprepared.
I was in Punta Gorda when in 2004 three different hurricanes and tropical storms moved across the state and what a difference in the response. Bush had supplies ready and waiting just out of the path of the storms..

Now Crist..
He's fair and honest. Fairness is losing the senate race. After all the Republicans can't have someone who sees the world in all its colors, not just their standard black and white. In the past few days he stood up for what was right and spoke honestly about the jobs created and now the Republican want what? Seriously, those folks are in need of therapy, long term, in house therapy.

Bobby Jindal, what a hypocrite. Still says the stimulus was bad but doesn't mind signing the oversized check at a ribbon cutting for a stimulus plan project. As if he deserved credit for it!!!

Is the tide turning or didn't he get the Republican memo that Obama is the devil? Do we have a new breed of Republicans who will try an honest approach since the obstructionist approach isn't working or do we have someone with a sense of decency in Crist?

I am from Louisiana. Bobby Jindal won because of the govt response to Katrina and Rita, if he was governor the response would have been better. It is well accepted here that the response after the fact was in direct correlation to the political party in office at the time. (This does not mean the search & rescue times, but the rebuilding/grant providing phase.) So I feel it is a shame that the GOP had a chance to exploit a situation they helped to foster. If you think he will win another election, think again. His action while in office was good for his political stance with the GOP but bad for the state he was elected to govern. (As if that wasn' forseeable.) So Bobby is a one-hit wonder.

" stimulus package is a way to get an extra $600 billion of public spending at the cost of $900 billion in private expenditure. This is a bad deal." Dr. Barro professor of economics Harvard University

Please...also provide quotes from Paul Krugman, Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University, regarding the stimulus package. Don't be the typical, short-sighted, far-right protagonist who simply seeks to substantiate preconceived notions. This topic is far too complex to be summed in such a rigid and inflexible comment/position as yours. And, even if you do settle with that position, shouldn't you take up your cause against those Repubs who have displayed lo-keyed approval of the package?

The Good news that the stimulus created jobs was not the kind of news the Repugnicants wanted. Just like Rush Limbaugh that wanted to hear it was a miserable failure - so they could say vote Republican. These people hate America. In the story of Solomon and the two women claiming the infant, these people are like the woman who said cut the child in half rather than admit she was not the mother.

I will give Christ this, at least he's not exploiting sombody's suffering for political gain by making a photo-op in a hospital hospice. That's alot more than I can say about Jebbie Bush...

That said, he's done very little as governor save campaign for the senator's seat that Martinez left open for him. Mel Martinez was"W" Bush's puppet, so much so that s soon as his master couldn't protest him, he ran for cover and retired without even finishing his first term...

" I was raised to respect the presidency of the United States." Thank you. Many Americans need to truly embrace this thought--you may not agree with the president on all things, but our president should still be respected. THANK YOU, Gov. Crist!
