Bloom Box
The anticipated Bloom Box announcement today could have a major impact on clean energy technology.

Bloom Energy unveiled their much anticipated fuel cell Wednesday. The secretive California start-up released details on the Bloom Box this afternoon at the eBay Headquarters in San Jose, CA.

Bloom Energy founder K.R. Sridhar spoke, along with former Secretary of State and Bloom Energy board member Colin Powell.

Bloom Energy claims the Bloom Box will revolutionize clean energy technology and says it could even alter people's dependency on traditional power grids.

Check back here for live updates.

1:05 PM ET: Powell is off stage, and Sridhar returns to wrap it up and announce a tour for the press, Engadget reported.

1:00 PM ET: Colin Powell on why he supports the Bloom server, from CNET's live blog:

Once people move up out of poverty they want things that consume energy. Homes, cars, etc. ... We want people to move up. So you take economic growth, you then look at the energy demand it places on the existing systems. And then you look at the impact on the environment...all those three things are connected & you can't separate them out.

Bloom seemed to be a product that matched all these needs.

12:55 PM ET: The final, highly anticipated keynote speaker, Colin Powell, is announced, CNET reports.

12:51 PM ET: Video rolls. The Bloom server has the backing of NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and California Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Bloomberg, from Engadget's live blog:

Make no mistake, when we look at Bloom, we are looking at the future of business, economy, and America.

12:43 PM ET: Cox's James Kennedy, from CNET's live blog:

We need to reduce our energy and carbon footprint. We were able to reduce 10% very quickly just via conservation. But getting beyond that was really difficult. Has 4 units at KTVU in San Francisco. It's been working for over a month now. We've produced energy we need for 70% of the facility.

12:31 PM ET: John Donahoe of eBay, Bill Simon of Walmart, Brian Kelly of Coca-Cola, and Google's Larry Page are on stage, Engadget reported.

"It was almost too good to be true," Donahoe said.

12:30 PM ET: Sridhar concludes his speech and introduces a panel of representatives from Bloom Energy's customers, which include Google, Walmart, eBay and Bank of America, CNET reported. Venture capitalist John Doerr will be moderating the panel.

12:25 PM ET: The three key major value propositions of the Bloom server are its "lower energy costs, clean power, and reliable power," Sridhar said, nearing the end of his speech.

The first value proposition is the 3-5 year payback period, and fixed energy prices for the next ten years, Mashable reported.

Secondly, the carbon footprint is 50% cleaner than the grid and 100% renewable.

Lastly, it provides power around the clock (24/7/365). If a box or unit has to be fixed, it will still generate power, without affecting the rest of the unit.

12:22 PM ET: Sridhar reveals the Bloom energy server, which is mysteriously covered with a black tarp, CNET reports. Beneath the tarp, behold! A giant box. "It's my baby, isn't she beautiful?" Sridhar says.

12:20 PM ET: Sridhar, holding a stack of fuel cells, compares the Bloom Box to a server, Engadget reports:

We'd prefer you call it a Bloom energy server ... Like servers, when you need more, you add as clusters.

12:16 PM ET: Sridhar explains that the Bloom Box can operate in two ways. From CNET's live blog:

It can convert electricity and store it, so that it can hook up to a home server to power you ... This won't be ready for 10 years though.

12:15 PM ET: Sridhar explains the flexibility of using fuel cell technology. Engadget reports:

We can use a variety of materials... this fuel cell can take any of those fuels, and because of the unique chemistry, use that to produce electricity without the need for chemical plants that are complex that need to process the fuel. The fuel cell does all that for us. That's the uniqueness.

12:08 PM ET: Sridhar on the core of Bloom Energy's technology, from CNET's live blog:

The fuel cell--yes folks we did not invent this ... What had not been done was clean energy that was affordable ... The core of our technology. It's sand ... It's plentiful. Cheap.

12:04 PM ET: Sridhar on finding a new way of approaching energy, from Engadget's live blog:

Way before we had to confront environmental issues associated with this, the geopolitical issues that we'd face was a very big deal. That was not acceptable. You can't conserve your way out of this problem, you can't drill your way out of this problem... we simply had to find a different way. ... Look at computers. Telephones. As they became portable and affordable, the were more adopted.

12:00 PM ET: Sridhar explains his past as a rocket scientist at NASA, when he was trying to "make Mars our second home," CNET reported:

While I was dreaming about Mars, historically unprecedented things have happened on earth. The poor coming out of poverty wanted more of everything--more resources, water, energy. They have a right to this.

11:59 AM ET: Sridhar is up to the podium, CNET reported.

11:54 AM ET: Schwarzenegger is speaking. From CNET's live blog:

Schwarzenegger: 160 yrs ago people flocked to California for the gold rush. Same spirit is still alive and can be seen as Bloom Energy. Bloom is 60% cleaner than coal.

From Mashable's live blog:

Arnold has proposed a law to exempt green technologies from the sales tax, which would cover Bloom Energy. "Jobs, jobs, jobs, right now."

11:50 AM ET: K.R. Sridhar is out, CNET reported. Sridhar announces that California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will be making a surprise appearance.

11:30 AM ET: Bloom Energy's website has gone live.

Interesting....but... the whole thing about "carbon neutral" is a hoax. Heck if I run a gas turbine on landfill gas it is carbon neutral also. And Most of us don't live on top of a landfill.

If you want to tout fuel cells vs turbines, fine.
If you want to tout landfill gas vs. natural gas, then do that.

But don't mix them up. They are independent.

And if you really want to blow smoke out your ears, throw in some vague discussion about solar produced hydrogen, and you will totally destroy your credibility.

I don't understand all the excitement about this new product. It will require natural gas, how is that going to solve our energy problems, or pollution of the planet? I understand it will be more energy efficient, but I am sure drilling for natural gas is still bad for the planet, and natural gas is not available in all areas.

It seems as if this country is fighting very hard not to use and develop new solar and wind technology. Geo-thermal seems to be cast aside as well.

1) It doesn't "require" natural gas. It requires a fuel source. Any type of fuel source.

2) Natural gas is a lot more plentiful than oil

3) It's not an energy cure-all, but it's a huge advancement, and that's the point.

Oh wait, you're one of those people who thinks we'll jump from coal straight to fusion technology, right?

OK, so it requires Hydrogen then....and who has that ?
Or, it requires landfill gas......how many people live on top of a landfill.
So , for practical purposes it requires natural gas (methane)

"this country is fighting very hard not to use and develop new solar and wind technology"

We are not, we are spending a fortune on Wind and Solar.
It just cost many times what Nuclear costs and cannot be used for our 24/7/365 baseline power like Coal and Nuclear.

Why do you think Obama is for “clean coal” and Nuclear? Because 50% (20% Nuclear today) of our electricity comes from coal, switching to Nuclear would raise it a little, switching it to wind and solar, not possible without storage anyway, would mean electric bills 5 TIMES HIGHER THAN TODAY! He dosen’t have any politically viable choice. People cannot pay electric bills higher than their rent or mortgage.

Dr. Chu was asked since solar is now a proven technolgy why are utilities not putting up millions of them. His response, “the price of solar would have to fall by a factor of 5 to 10 for that to happen”. Google his interviews.

Fascinating. In theory.

Tesla must be smiling from the beyond.
02:49 PM on 02/24/2010
We should be investing the 8 billion currently marked to develop nuclear power plants into long term affordable alternative clean energy.
Imagine how that could turn around the economy and help the planet.

Before you get too exicted this is not a energy source, you put fuel in.
The only perfectly clean fuel is hydrogen, which it takes electricity to make.
You still would have to made the electricity.

Note from the above article:
"Schwarzenegger: 160 yrs ago people flocked to California for the gold rush. Same spirit is still alive and can be seen as Bloom Energy. Bloom is 60% cleaner than coal."

Using existing fossil fuel in these cells is a better way of "burning" it.
Notice he said, "60% cleaner than coal", not carbon free, because it still uses fuel.

Well, it is capable of using any hydrocarbon gas, not just Hydrogen. That means natural gas, landfill methane and other plentiful sources of fuel are candidates for the bloom. If the efficiencies are to be believed it makes more sense to install these instead of building another natural gas power plant.

If there's a beta test, sign me up.

I agree.

Plus, hydrogen is a scam. It's diversion oil companies came up with during the Bush administration. There's a reason our energy secretary wanted to kill funding for the hydrogen highway bs - the technology isn't ready. Electric cars are much closer to being viable than hydrogen powered cars ever were.

The cheapest hydrogen powered car I've seen runs just under a million dollars to produce. It's a sick joke that this country saw the electrical vehicle program killed for this swindle. The most abundant source of creating hydrogen happens to be natural gas - oil companies essentially want to sell us the replacement for gasoline.

The place I see the bloom box being most useful is to capture solar and wind energy peak elecricity production and store energy for nighttime (solar) and hot windless days (wind).

Also, charging (reverse bloom box) at night in your home (when grid demand is low) and using it to run the A/C during the day would lighten the grid load - if they can get the technology to do that too.

That is, if bloom can deliver.

Delighted that Bloom Energy has finally revealed its Bloom Box technology.
Check out an exclusive VIDEO interview with Bloom Energy CEO at Fresh Dialogues. In this rare interview, KR Sridhar answers the questions:
Is the bloom box really non polluting?
How is it more efficient than existing fuels?
How can it become the gas station for the future?

It does have some cool applications but it is in itself not a energy source, the energy comes from the fuel you put into it. It can "burn' that fuel very efficienctly, better than a gas engine turning a generator, for example. Think a Prious Hybrid Car that gets 100 MPG instead of 50 MPG.

"How is it more efficient than existing fuels?"

It is not a "fuel", you put "existing fuels" into it.

Thank you!
My first thought - I want to know more than what this article is telling me.

I think a realistic future solution is using solar power to make hydrogen, then use the hydrogen in fuel cells (like the Bloom Box) at night. Dr. Chu' Dept is doing research on this but it is almost unbelievably costly. Think electric bills 100 times what they are today. While we have been building fuel cells since 1960, the one we build today contain some very expensive rare earth materials like platinum, more rare and costly than gold. Solar is 5 times more expensive than nuclear today WITHOUT STORAGE.. In 50-100 years maybe not.

The bloombox does not - and can not - use hydrogen. It requires a hydrocarbon molecule, not a hydrogen molecule.
12:46 PM on 02/24/2010
still can't compete with solar/hydroelectric/wind.....very expensive and they need a constant high cost CO2 emitting fuel source and they have a limited lifetime (5 years or less).

"can't compete with solar/hydroelectric/wind"

You are correct this not change where we get energy.
solar/wind 3%
hydroelectric 3%
Nuclear 20%
Coal 50%

You are correct they are an energy converter, not an energy source, fuel must go in.
Does have some neat applications though, like a cell phone you "re-fuel" once a month.
04:53 PM on 02/24/2010
google rancho cielo solar farm.....700 MW for 700 million dollars....much cheaper than nuclear and clean!!
05:23 PM on 02/24/2010
Lifetime of the boxes is estimated at at least 30 years. Try again.

BTW, solar is the most expensive type of energy out there. Try again.

Fuel cells are exciting. There is another company working on a small one that could power you cell phone or laptop a month between "re-fueling"

They are more efficient because instead of burning fuel to make electricity, tansmitting it, then using it to charge you cell phone, you could put the fuel directly in.
