GM Ending Hummer: Controversial Brand To Be Discontinued (PHOTOS)

Gm Ending Hummer

The AP is reporting that the Hummer brand is no more, after a deal with a Chinese manufacturer fell through.

It's not GM's first failed deal to sell a brand since it came out of bankruptcy, The New York Times notes. A deal to sell the Saturn line fell apart. After a few false starts, the Dutch company Spyker agreed to buy the Saab brand.

(Scroll down for a slideshow retrospective on the Hummer brand.)

Here's the AP:

"DETROIT - General Motors Co. said Wednesday it will shut down Hummer after its bid to sell the brand to a Chinese company collapsed.

Heavy equipment maker Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co. pulled out of the deal for Hummer, known for its hulking, military-like SUVs, because it was unable to get clearance from Chinese regulators within the proposed deal timeframe, the manufacturer said in a separate statement.

GM said it will continue to honor existing Hummer warranties.

"We are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed," said John Smith, GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances. "GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner."

GM has been trying to sell the loss-making brand for the last year and found a suitor in Tengzhong, but resistance from Chinese regulators created difficulties from the start. As recently as Tuesday private investors were trying to set up an offshore entity in a last-minute effort to complete the acquisition head of a Feb. 28 deadline.

Hummer is the second brand after Saturn that GM has failed to sell as part of its restructuring. GM sold Swedish brand Saab to Dutch carmaker Spyker Cars NV earlier this year. Pontiac is being discontinued.

GM is focusing its efforts on its four remaining brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick."

Last month Bloomberg reported that Hummer's management was expecting a deal to come through. It's unclear why the deal fell through. Here's Bloomberg:

"While the transaction approval process is not proceeding as quickly as originally forecasted, we're optimistic about the progress that has occurred to date," Jim Taylor, Hummer's chief executive officer, said in an e-mailed statement. "There are more than 3,000 people directly employed in the design, build and sale of Hummer vehicles. As such, we are committed to giving the sale every reasonable opportunity toward a successful conclusion."

Too back about Saturn it was a nice vehicle. But Hummer, that was just another flashy vehicle for certain individuals I know to pull behind their motor home to make an impression, and there are not enough of them around to make it economically feasible to build anymore. It had no fuel economy. It was just as hard to park as my RAM 3500 dually.

I have about 50 yrs as an auto enthusiast and a shade tree mechanic.
I'd like to say good riddance to the Hummer. It was a purposeless and wasteful vehicle.
GM won't kill Hummer because of demand. GM kills Hummer it can't afford to build them any more!
GM, in a huge display of stupidity, tries to sell Saab, Saturn & Opel. All very good and fuel efficient cares. (What the public buys all of the time, that is)
But like a spoiled child hangs on to Hummer to the very end!
We see the business strategy of GM. If you don't want a guzzler, screw you!
GM again shows how really greedy and ignorant they really are.
But 1 good situation will come from this.
All those men who drove Hummers because of ED (most of them I assume) will have to go to their doctors and get the Ciallis prescription.
Hey it's cheaper all around.

So will the mouth frothing fringies now set their sights on teh Landcruiser and FJ Cruiser which is every bit as big, inefficient and ugly as the HUmmer or will they wallow in hypocrisy?

The liberals will go after them if the gas pedals stick.

Good riddance! Based on my road experience almost all Hummer drivers were bullies using their oversized vehicles to tailgate, cut off, or otherwise behave aggressively towards drivers of smaller vehicles! Hopefully Hummer drivers will now seek therapy or other ways to curb their need for road-raging their fellow motorists!

It was supposed to be for the millitary, they took a gamble selling it to the general public and the gamble didn't pay off.

The only reason why it was controversial was because the eco-thugs hijacked the message, and that the lemmings and sheeple were too ignorant to say something otherwise.

I never wanted a Hummer, but the reaction to GM killing the brand makes me worry that eco-thugs will dictate that everyone should drive a small hybrid, whether they like it or not.

And please, keep the EV-1 out of this. It's never coming back, build a bridge and get over it. And let me dream some more about getting a Camaro, whether you like it or not.

These gas guzzling substitutes for small or no penises should have been dropped by GM years ago. Brilliant ideas like this are the reason why GM is in trouble not unions.

Consumers demand big SUVs ... GM Delivers. Its called Supply and Demand. Demand has fallen and therefore the brand is not necessary and GM is cutting the supply. Its pretty basic.

Before you make asinine comments like that, USE YOUR BRAIN.

Given that logic of supply and demand, if people start demanding Sherman tanks as vehicles we should go ahead and sell them. Don't get me wrong. While I believe in a free market it must be tempered with common sense and the common good! Driving an oversized vehicle which burns disproportionate amounts of non-renewable resources is NOT in the common good!

Good point, but what car should a woman with a large vag use for a substitute?

But what will suburbanites do if they can't drive a tank to the corner store?

Visit their local Toyota dealer for an FJ Cruiser, Landcruiser or LS Series? That's if teh Toyota they are driving will actually stop at the dealership and not accclerate past it.

The Humvee was designed to race across flat and rolling European terrain in a war of maneuver versus the Soviet Union. It wasn't designed for the type of war we're fighting right now.

I don't think the Red Army probably isn't going to come pouring through the Fulda Gap anytime soon.

The Humvee is an all terrain military vehicle which has nothing to do with the stupid Hummer. In fact the consumer Hummer has little mechanical resemblance to the military version other than it's size and gas mileage.

True, I was trying to respond to the person that was worried about giving "Hummer technology to China".

Idiot-boy here clicked the wrong link instead.

You can achieve the same effect by taping $20,000 to the hood of a Chevy Tahoe.
