Iran To U.S.: Leave Middle East

ALBERT AJI and ELIZABETH A. KENNEDY   02/25/10 06:09 PM ET   AP

Iran Mideast Syria Us Ahmadinejad
Ahmadinejad, during a trip to Syria, said the U.S. should leave the Middle East.

DAMASCUS, Syria — Syrian President Bashar Assad defied U.S. calls to loosen ties with Iran on Thursday, saying his long-standing alliance with Tehran remains strong despite overtures from Washington intended to shift his loyalties.

The U.S. has reached out to Syria in recent months by nominating the first U.S. ambassador to Damascus since 2005 and sending top diplomats to meet with President Bashar Assad. Washington is hoping to draw Syria away from Iran and the militant groups Hezbollah and Hamas.

But with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by his side in Damascus, Assad said Thursday that America should not dictate relationships in the Middle East.

"I find it strange how they talk about Middle East stability and at the same time talk about dividing two countries," Assad told reporters when asked about Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's call Wednesday for Syria to move away from Iran.

Assad took a swipe at Clinton for making such a suggestion, saying he and Ahmadinejad "misunderstood, maybe because of translation error or limited understanding." In a show of unity, the two signed an agreement canceling travel visas between the their countries.

U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley, speaking to reporters in Washington on Thursday, said Assad "need only look around the region and recognize that Syria is increasingly an outlier."

"We want to see Syria play a more constructive role in the region and one step would be to make clear what Iran needs to do differently. And unfortunately, there was no evidence of that today," he said.

President Barack Obama is determined to engage with Syria, a country seen as key to peace in the region but which the State Department considers a sponsor of terrorism.

Former President George W. Bush withdrew the last U.S. ambassador to Syria in 2005 after the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, which his supporters blamed on Syria. Syria denies any links.

Assad's strong words Thursday indicate that America does not have the kind of leverage it thought over Syria, said Joshua Landis, an American professor and Syria expert who runs a popular blog called Syria Comment.

"America overplayed its hand," Landis said. "The rest of the world is engaged with Syria – France is doing business, Turkey is doing business. Syria can survive. But it can't survive cutting ties with Iran."

Still, there are signs Assad could be open to a breakthrough with America.

Assad has begun to dismantle his father's socialist legacy since he rose to office in 2000. He has loosened the reins on banking, sought to attract foreign investment, and encouraged tourism and private education.

He also is hoping for U.S. help in boosting the Syrian economy and American mediation in direct peace talks with Israel – a recognition that he needs U.S. help to reach his goal of winning the return of the Golan Heights, seized by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.

But Clinton said Wednesday that the recent decision to send an ambassador to Syria did not mean American concerns about the country have been addressed.

Speaking to lawmakers in Washington, Clinton said the nomination of career diplomat Robert Ford signaled a "slight opening" with Syria. But she said Washington remained troubled by suspected Syrian support for militant groups in Iraq and elsewhere, interference in Lebanon and Syria's close relationship with Iran.

Ahmadinejad's trip comes amid rising U.S. tension with Iran over its nuclear program. The U.S. and others believe Iran is hiding nuclear weapons development under the guise of a civilian energy program. Iran insist its intentions are peaceful.

Assad called America's stance toward Iran "a new situation of colonialism in the region."

Despite its efforts to woo Syria, Washington has not lifted sanctions on Damascus. First imposed by Bush and renewed by Obama in May, the sanctions cite Syria's support for terrorism, its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and other activities including efforts to undermine U.S. operations in Iraq.

Iran's economic and political support has enabled Syria to survive those sanctions and international isolation.

Ahmadinejad stressed that Syria and Iran are partners with a long history.

"There is nothing that could harm these brotherly relations," he said. "With each passing day, these relations will improve and deepen."

Sarkis Naoum, political editor of the Beirut daily An-Nahar, who follows Iran-Syria relations, says he does not see the countries severing ties anytime soon.

"Syria was supported by Iran, Iran helped Syria maintain its regime," he said. "Mr. Obama's engagement policy has not worked yet."

even though there have been policies that i havent agreed with, both past and present, i cant say that stupidity is endemic to the white house, its just that america tends to either follow theirr parties of choice blindly or fails to realize that campaign promises are just empty rhetoric. i feel both are the case with O. he made lots of promises before he got into office just to realize that he didnt have all the facts untill after he was in office. sitting down with this nut job in iran is the worst mistake we could make. we should take all steps ness. to help the good people of iran get these religious zeaolots out of power and restore that country to a free and friendly nation. not only would it benefit the us, but its what the people of iran want and deserve.

You are mixing two separate things:

1. Democracy in ME
2. West hegemony in ME.

It is not a package deal or is it?

Iran was the fist country with bill of human right 2500 years ago, including banning of slavery and freedom of religion for Jews, who were slaves back then!

Democracy without a powerful media is an illusion in west.

You are as free as your media let you know and CNN and FOX news does not let you know to be free.

99% of Americans do not realize how the Zionists are brainwashing them and get them into the wars and killings. The start brainwashing from kinder garden with hero mentality, bad guy/good guy, insulting smart kids as nerds to break their resistance of free thinking.

I am sorry for you guys, the enemy of you are not in ME. Turn on Fox news and CNN and you will see your real enemies.

Iran has political prisoners, it is not as free as the population wish etc etc. But Iranians are ten times more free than Americans.

It is just easy to control Americans, because they are a bunch of zombies. They are walking in sleep!

Supreme court appoints a president in US and not a single demonstration. In Iran it was a revoloution if that happened over there. That's real democracy and power of people.

Even the leader of the opposition time and after time has told America, we do not want your help.

We do not want your weapons, money, guidelines and even democracy. It is not a tactical decision, hear me out.

People of Iran like America for her technology, but as the same time they do not want to have anything with American political system, American export of its version of democracy etc etc It is an strategic decision.

Mark my word. You freed Iraq, didn't you? The moment your solders leave Iraq, she will join Syria, Iran and Lebanon. Why? Nobody wants your democracy! Everybody wants true democracy.

What is true democracy? Power of people! Not Money, Not Zionism.

In the video available on the net Iranian officer made tow claims.

1. He showed a photo of Rigi in a US base in Afghanistan.
2. He told that Iran counter terrorist group could take him out long time ago, but wanted to capture him alive.

The level of sophistication is enormous. Imagine if true, they could take out any US hight ranking person in the camp, or at least try to do it.

By definition US forced in the Afghanistan and Iraq are fighting a war against Muslim population. As such it is much easier for Iran undercover warfare against US than vis versa.

US has neglected the possibilities of these types of operations and historical example like Lebanon bombing of US base, shows that a few successful undercover large scale operation will undermine US resolve to stay and fight.

In case US attacks Iran, US should expect not only a war face to face with her advisories. She might find the enemy in their military bases shooting from unsuspended points.

It is in US interest to sit down with Iran, without a precondition, with camera running and saying what they want from Iran.

What is the total ramification of this quote made my Ahmadinejad during joint news conference and how would this be accomplished:

"Ahmadinejad, a Holocaust denier, spoke of Israel's eventual "demise and annihilation" and said the countries of the region could create a future "without Zionists and without colonialists."

How will Ahmadinejad accomplish this? What is the core of the meaning of what Ahmadinejad is saying with all its implications, including holocaust denial? What is the meaning of annihilation with all its implications?

Recycling Washington Post fictions, I see. From Syria specialist Joshua Landis's blog http://joshualandis.com/blog/?p=5549 this is what he actually said:
1) President Ahmadinejad, who is widely quoted for his conditional prediction: IF ISRAEL DECIDES TO COMMIT ANOTHER “MISTAKE” (start another war) it will be its end, also said today in Damascus:

وأقول لهم إن الشرق الأوسط الجديد هو في طور التحول.. داعياً الصهاينة إلى العودة لرشدهم وأن يعترفوا بحقوق شعوب المنطقة ويحترموا شعوبها وأن يعلموا إذا ساروا في المسار الخاطئ للماضي فلا مكان لهم في منطقتنا.

“I say to them that the new Middle East is in the process of formation … I call on the Zionists to return to their senses and to recognize the legitimate rights of the people of the region and to respect them and to understand that if they continue to go down the wrong path, which they have traveled in the past, there will be no place for them in our region.”

Any person who is true Patriot in US should work to stop current stick policy of Obama administration towards Iran.

A war with Iran will implode US economy and military. Just run the numbers.

Israel was defeated by a brigade of hizbbulah. The Iraq resistance was mostly among a minority Sunni group and the acctual war was waged by 1000-2000 fighters.

Iran has an armed 2 million man militia. During the Iraq war this militia did not have so many weapons.

They walked with free will on mine fields so the fields were cleared for Iranian army to attack Iraqis. They arrange human waves toward the Iraqi army posts so the posts run out of the ammunition and then killed them by knifes. I do not make up these stories, there are thousands of these stories are documented by Iran.

The combination of Iranian nationalist with roots in 3000 years of independence with a religious belief that if killed heaven is granted without reckoning is a poisonous combination.

History has showed that any emperor that has tated this potion would not survive to see the next decade. Ghegis Khan and Spatans have tasted this potion which resulted in their total annihilation.

I advice Obama to control his urge to take a sip.

Iranian forces captures Mosque bombing Jundallah terrorist Abdolmalek Rigi:
http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=119318§ionid=351020101
"As initial reports indicated that Iran's most wanted man was captured on a flight en-route to Kyrgyzstan from Dubai, a source talking to Press TV on condition of anonymity confirmed that Rigi and one of his deputies were captured after their plane was brought down by security forces in an airport in the Iranian Persian Gulf city of Bandar Abbas.
Iran's intelligence minister says the leader of Jundallah terrorist group was at a US base in Afghanistan 24 hours before his capture, in possession of a US-issued, forged Afghan passport"
"According to the intelligence minister, Rigi also met with NATO military chief in Afghanistan in April 2008 and also had links with some EU member states, as well as visiting such countries"

Thanks, Pod.
Here's some sources claiming the pakistanis had actually captured him on their side of the border and arranged to hand him over, since arms meant for jundallah were being diverted to Balochi separatists. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/LB25Df02.html
What does this mean? I believe there's a confluence of interests taking place between the Americans, Iranians and Pakistanis, and would not be surprised if the Taleban were not invited to peace talks by this time next year.
The bombs going off all over? By people who don't want peace4 to break out.

The captured ringleader of the Jundallah terrorist group, Abdolmalek Rigi, has confessed that the US administration had assured him of unlimited military aid and funding for waging an insurgency against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The following is the detailed transcript of Rigi's confession, stated in Farsi, as broadcasted on Press TV.

"After Obama was elected, the Americans contacted us and they met me in Pakistan. They met us after clashes with my group around March 17 in (the southeastern city of) Zahedan, and he (the US operative) said that Americans had requested a meeting."

"I said we didn't have any time for a meeting and if we do help them they should promise to give us aid. They said they would cooperate with us and will give me military equipment, arms and machine guns. They also promised to give us a base along the border with Afghanistan next to Iran."

Americans are in denial.

I suggest Iran president has tortured these scientist to find cure for diabetic type 1 and type II.

http://www.royaninstitute.org/cmsen/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=73&Itemid=41

From article: Diabetes mellitus is a global epidemic of increasingly severe magnitude. The World Health Organization predicts that by the year 2025, 30 million people worldwide will suffer from Type 1 diabetes, and 300 million people with Type 2 diabetes. As the leading cause of heart disease, renal failure, blindness and lower limb amputation in the world, diabetes has been classified by WHO as one of the major threats to human health in the 21st century. Treatment of diabetes by transplantation of insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells has recently become possible, but is severely limited by the availability of donor tissue. Hence, new sources of insulin-producing cells are in great demand.
Research in our group is focused on the developmental biology of the pancreas.

So much for war on terrorism of Mr. Bush.
Obama doctrine might be when you can nor defeat them join them instead.

One year ago the dajjal of America in a message for NouRooz (the Persian new year) quoted a poem from Saedi that human beings are like limbs and parts of the same body. If one part make suffering for the rest of the body, other parts can not rest from pain.

If he really believe in what Saedi said, what is the consequence of supporting a terrorist group in Iran?

According to Saedi, the consequences is that US and the rest of the world that belong to the same human body cannot rest at nights.

You see America should still learn the lesson very school children in Iran know by memorizing this poem.

America Stop make pains, it will come back to you!

Iran needs to take its own advice! Persians have no business meddling in the affairs of the Middle East, along with America! It's their combined agendas which have turned Palestinians and Israelis into pawns on a chessboard! See my link below.

This is very true. I wish Iranian meddling in Iraq had more press. I also wish that any support of Saudi Arabian Wahhabis for Al Queda in Iraq was also publicized. Maybe if both regional powers ceased meddling in Iraq, Iraq would have a chance for stability. Iraq is sort of being forgotten in all the caustic rhetoric taking place in Middle east right now.

Parsi, I agree with you on the point of democracy and Iran. But US made a big mistake in supporting the Shah. The Shah was an American puppet because he sided with us and we could push him around. So the US overthrew the Iran government Mossadegh government. This is a clear cut case of American Imperialism. So when the Revolution came to Iran in 1979 to send him packing back to his puppet master, the People of Iran did a beautiful thing. It said to Imperial Powers (America & Britain) take your Shah and shove him.

Now the Islamic government that took over is another matter.
