Johnny Weir Fires Back At Critics

Johnny Weir, the American Olympic figure skater with a reality show, has remained in the news even after the men's figure skating competition ended -- and not because he invented a fictional medal for himself.

Last week, a pair of Australian commentators made controversial remarks about Weir and other men's figure skaters. Later, a Canadian broadcaster said Weir should get a gender test.

At a press conference this week, Weir cracked that "I grew my beard out a little bit just to show that indeed I am a man." He then moved on to address his most vituperative critics:

I hope that more children have the same opportunities as me, with the same parents as me, that let me be an individual, who gave me freedom, and taught me to believe in myself before anyone else would believe in me.

I hope more young boys and girls can grow up to have that love and support from their families, and it's very clear to me that those two men talking on that program did not have that kind of upbringing.
