SeaWorld Killing: Park Now Faces A Major Public Relations Challenge

By LAURA WIDES-MUNOZ   02/26/10 08:53 AM ET   AP

Seaworld Killing Pr

Marketing and public relations experts say what the company does in coming days will be key to preserving its image.

Glenn Bunting, managing director for the Los Angeles-based crisis management firm Sitrick and Co. said SeaWorld needs to respond promptly and proactively.

"They need to review every safety precaution," he said. "They need to explain how it happened, why it happened and make sure it doesn't happen again to reassure the public."

The company stumbled during its first post-attack press conference. Orlando SeaWorld President Dan Brown did not immediately correct a sheriff's spokesman who said Brancheau accidentally fell into the water, and Brown himself said only that she "drowned in an incident with one of our killer whales."

SeaWorld acknowledged two hours later that Tilikum had grabbed Brancheau by her ponytail and yanked her into the water. The park then made its head animal trainer available to the media to explain and defend its methods of training and maintaining its whales.

Larry L. Smith, president of the Institute for Crisis Management, in Louisville, Ky., defended SeaWorld's response.

"They've not overreacted. They've not gone into a stall. They're not ducking the media," he said. And, he said, they had the advantage that the attack occurred the same day the head of Toyota testified before Congress about his own company's public relations crisis and broke down crying.

Smith said the attack could actually drive up attendance of at least one demographic – teens and young adults.

"It's not going to draw families necessarily or older people who would typically visit there, but there is an age group that gets excited about the risks and the potential for drama and it may attract some of those folks," he said.

Peter Yesawich, chairman of Ypartnership, an Orlando marketing firm that specializes in travel and entertainment, said SeaWorld enjoys a reputation as a family friendly and animal friendly company, which should help it recover from the crisis. In Florida, its veterinarians have been known to respond to cases of injured marine animals in the wild.

Yesawich said SeaWorld also showed responsibility by shutting down its killer whale shows until it can assess what happened. And fatal accidents at other theme parks – such as last summer's Disney World monorail crash that killed the ride's operator – don't stop the public from attending.

"It's one of these tragic, unpredictable instances that I personally don't think is going to do any long-term damage to the SeaWorld brand," he said.

Denise DeVore, 36, a photographer from Beacon, N.Y., visited the park with her 3-year-old daughter Wednesday and said she felt it was safe for the public. DeVore said she thinks SeaWorld plays an important role in educating people about marine life.

But will she return?

She echoed several other parents who were torn, though not because of the attack.

"The question is should we have whales in captivity? These are wild animals," DeVore said, adding, "But my daughter loves those dolphins."

Many animal rights actisits consider Hanna to be little more than a shill for the lucrative big business of animal entertainment, with little concerne for their ultimate welfare. His recent appearance on Larry King where he was caught on camera mocking the speech impediments of a former marine animal trainer opposed to keeping Orcas in captivity at Sea World--and other places--as widely criticized.

Jack Hanna was pathetic defending the exploitation of Orcas at Sea World and other marine parks around the world.

Jane Velez Mitchell is an ardent speaker of animal rights--go on Jane! But King interupted her several times and Tippi Hedron--while letting the boys do the same. As usual. King is so predictable.

Both Hanna and some other joker whose name I didn't catch--he used to be the head trainer at Sea World-- gave the usual lame educational lie--like keeping these Giants in little tanks for their entire lives--educates the public in any wayl.

Thad Somebody, kept insulting everybody and dismissing them as merely actors, journalists or fired and washed up ex trainers and how only expert trainers like himself were qualified to even have an opinion on the subject. This was sxreaming for a response like comparing an animal abuser as an "expert" on animals! But nobody refuted this pompous tool!).

Truly since animals cannot speak for themselves, their defenders really need to sharpen their debating skills. Please!

I had made a comment the other nite about SeaWorld and the whales. I would like to apologize for my statement . After just hearing Former Trainer of Seaworld, Thad Lacinak, I am so disgusted by Mr. Lacinak and his statements. I do not support holding Killer Whales as hostages in a large bathtub.

We live in the 21st century and that means there is absolutely no reason for animals to be caged in zoos or kept in pools for the amusement of paying customers! If you want to see wildlife, turn on your computers or Animal Planet. Supporting these zoos and aquaria is supporting the entrapment of animals. Your children should not be taught that this is a "fun" outing! I do not support PETA but I do endorse the fact that animals should be in the wild!

How the tanks they live in are so shallow i think the polar bear at the lincoln park zoo has a deeper tank O.o

I would kill some one too if i could only be held in my apartment and had to do tricks for people.

I can see dolphins like doing tricks but a killer whale ? iono sea world is exploitation, zoo's and aquariums are iono kinda sad and troubling as they are good and bad.

Either way glad i never went to sea world. I'll say the animales at bush gardens got it going down

Sea World is derelict in it's duty of protecting animals.

Whales can never be in a sanctuary large enough that is man-made.

Sea World is making money on the backs of these animals and it is wrong !

A whale is too large to cage. And then, to teach it tricks for a treat is simply more obscene !

Oh, for God's sake - they need to retire the whale that has killed THREE people. I'm not saying it should be killed - after all it is a KILLER whale. But it needs to be retired pronto and returned to the wild, if possible. It's not always possible to do that with these animals. After all, they live in family and they have to be taken back to their family if they are to be released. Also, the ones born in captivity probably would be unable to survive in the wild.

the one they tried to release a few years ago was kicked out of every pod it tried to join. It ended up roaming the ocean by it self mostly chillen near boats till it died.

I rather be alone in a giant ocean than performing for rednecks but hey im not a whale so who knows what they like to do..

Sea World makes millions and millions of dollars from taking intelligent wild sea animals and penning them in tiny aquariums. Then breeding these creatures and creating offspring that willbe born into a pretty sad life. It's as bad as the circus, people really should not be taking their children to these shows.

Where should wild animals be? In the wild. Sea World is basically a prison for animals, as well as most zoos arround the world. The mentally ill used to be displayed for the entertainment of the public in mental health institutions, until it fell into disfavor. I would rather see a wolf in the wild than one chained up. Prisons of any kind promote the occupants to do bizarre things due to boredom and being confined in a small space. Should there be capital punishment for the animal that kills a person? Or, should this animal be in the wild where they belong?

I plan on attending the SanDiego Park this week. Anyone who works with wild animals takes the risk, yes, it is horrible about this woman's death. Terribly sad. But this is a wild animal and we are luck that we are able to even see one in captivity. There is no need to catch new ones in the wild, but this one is already in captivity. I look forward to going to Seaworld as soon my cold is over!

I will try to keep this short, as I get worked up. The "issue" is NOT "training" techniques; the issue is WHY this is even legal. Do a little research, if you like. SeaWorld is a FOR profit OWNED BY BLACKSTONE (the lovely hedgie ceo. Steven Schwartzmanj)-----bought recently from Anheauser-Busch. This particularly whale was captured off Iceland and is, mostly, a stud for propagating the SeaWorld business. It is unfortunate the trainer died, but, hey, she chose the job. As to "educating" us all about "wild" creaturess----this is b.s.------whether circus lions, buffalo, tigers, orcas, whatever. There are some wonderful NOT for profit Aquariums (take the Monterey Bay Aquarium, as an example) where children and people can truly be "educated" as well as entertained, but the animals are not trained and a real attempt to duplicate their "habitat" as much as possible is made. (Aren't we sick of seeing the video clip of the woman shaking her head right/left, to get the orca to do the same, then she throws him a #%^& fish.

It's simple SeaWorld has made enough money off of these poor creatures and needs to do right by them. They will not survive in the wild so they must create a coastal marine sanctuary and stop breeding animals that they cannot reintroduce back into the wild. Seaworld claims they are a conservation organization and try to market themselves as some sort of sanctuary but legitimate animal sanctuaries and rescues do not breed animals for captivity and do not force them to earn their keep through idiotic spectacles. SeaWorld has made plenty of money and needs to put an end to breeding animals for entertainment purposes. Their claim that these animals are ambassadors is bs. It sounds very important and meaningful but it doesn't mean anything. How often does keeping an individual animal of a particular species enslaved really help the species as a whole? What species has had their habitat saved or their numbers increase since we started keeping and breeding animals for captivity? Very few. In fact most species of animals are having a harder time than ever. SeaWorld and their ambassadors hasn't made the general public care enough to keep the oceans clean for Orcas and other marine life. Zoos, aquariums, and water parks are failures for most animals. It's time for a different approach.
