Watching live coverage of the tsunami on CNN, it seems Rick Sanchez needs to take a handful of Valium or Xanex, lay off the coke, switch decaf or just yanked off the air.

Hey everybody - the "deadly tsunami threatening 1/4 of the globe" just hit us here in New Zealand. It was a terrifying 8 inches of surge. Seagulls momentarily stirred from their scavenging in minor alarm.

I like the "instant" worldwide feed from Twitter, but can you screen out the spammers?

Maybe some of the comments here would be more valuable if all the commentators weren't complaining about this format and left room for people with real things to say. I think this is a pretty cool experiment and can be useful when used properly.

Twitter--It's a good thing: Global instantaneous updates by a cell phone--who'd a thunk it during the first Tsunami? of Tinamen Square? Would 6 million Jews still live?

These severe quakes should be a wake-up call for many countries who have an apathetic approach to building codes. I was in the Northridge quake in 1994 and it was only a 6.7 rating. The largest amount of deaths occurred in an apartment building that was not built to code and it pancaked. Our daughter-in law would have been killed if the Northridge shopping mall had been open. The entire building pancaked. Good building codes kept thousands of people from being killed. Wooden frame houses will flex during a quake, but what an awful racket with the screeching of all the joints in the house as it swayed back and forth. This quake was sudden and felt like a giant was kicking upwards from below. The Interstate collapsed 1/3 mile north of us; another major freeway collapsed 2 1/2 miles south of us. Single story houses were much better off than two story homes which had their roofs collapse into the top floor and chimneys fall through roofs. My wife, daughter-in-law and grandkids slept in our van with futons for the next week, I slept on the front lawn, but had a hard time sleeping because of all the aftershocks and constant booming noises coming from underground. If you live in a quake zone have an earthquake kit prepared and a quick exit plan for the house or apartment.

Twitter is brilliant. Power to the people! News from the sources rather than filtered through the lens of a single biased perspective!
