UPDATE 3/1/2010 2:52PM ET: Sony has warned PlayStation 3 users not to use their machines until the PlayStation network problem has been resolved.
Sony tells PS3 owners: 'We advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies and not being able to restore certain data.' (via FastCompany).

According to the AP, the problem is being caused by a 'Y2K-like bug:'
Sony says the problem was likely caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system. It's affecting older PlayStation 3 models, not the newest slim version.

The PlayStation network has suffered a major 'PSN error,' and Sony says it's trying to address the issue, which has interrupted PlayStation 3 owners' ability to connect to the PlayStation network.
