KKK Hood Found On UCSD Campus

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/02/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:40 PM ET

Ku Klux Klan

University of California San Diego police have confirmed that a white pillowcase fashioned as a Ku Klux Klan hood was found affixed to a statue in front of the Geisel Library on campus yesterday.

The Statement from the UCSD police:

UC San Diego police are investigating the discovery about 11 p.m. Monday of what appeared to be a white pillowcase that had been crudely reconstituted into a KKK-style hood with a hand-drawn symbol. It was placed on a statue outside the main campus library, and a rose was inserted into the statue's fingers.

The items have been removed and the police are processing them for evidence, including fingerprint and DNA analysis. An aggressive police investigation is underway. We will pursue this with all of our authority and individuals who are responsible will be punished to the full extent of the Student Code of Conduct and all applicable laws.

"We will not allow this incident, or any incident, to deter the progress we are making to change and heal our university community," said UC San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. "We will not tolerate these despicable actions. We stand in firm solidarity with our students and are fully committed to instituting their recommendations. We know these changes will make this university a better place and will help us improve our campus climate."

If you have any information about this incident, please call the UC San Diego Police Department at (858) 534-4359 or email detective@ucsd.edu.

This latest event is part of a wave of race-related incidents on UCSD campus. In mid-February, a "Compton Cookout"-themed party brought condemnation from school administrators and civil rights leaders. Several days later, the school's student television channel saw its funding frozen after it aired a program mocking the party. On Feb. 26, a noose was found hanging from a light inside the Geisel Library. The woman who placed it there confessed and has been suspended.

Similar racially charged incidents have occurred on other UC campuses as well in the past week. At UC Davis, a swastika was carved into a dorm-room door and the campus LGBT center was vandalized with anti-gay graffiti. On Monday, officials at UC Santa Cruz discovered a noose drawn on the inside of a bathroom door, with the words "San Diego" and "lynch" surrounding it.

On Thursday, March 4, college students across the state of California held walkouts, strikes and protests in reaction to recent budget cuts, layoffs, and tuition hikes. Send us photos, videos, and reports from the ground.

I always find it interesting that those with the most education are the biggest babies! I did not go to college and had to deal with the real world, I've started two companies and took the risk that most of you will not take. The real world only looks at your ability to generate revenue and not your over sized educated brain. After your done complaining, show us that all that education will be worth something and help make this world a better place. You are right that most of the sellouts come from the 60's and they should be ashamed because they have screwed you and the next generation of potential students but, when it all comes out of the wash you have to make a road and travel a path that reflects the education that your so painfully complaining about. Achievement reflects the society, complaining reflects your assumption that everything is roses. Trust me! Out here in the real world is where you put it down.

I spoke to a UCSD student yesterday. She is Israeli. She is really frightened about the Compton party, the nooses, and the KKK hood.

A student at USC told me that a "joke" was circulating around campus directed at Blacks. I won't repeat it.

Having attended UCLA decades ago and having faced similar incidents such as the shooting at Cambell Hall in 1972, one should not underestimate the influence of rich littler frat brats and agents provacateurs creating such incidences.

Why discredit the University now? Would budget cuts be behind the motivation? That would not explain the situation at USC, a private university. But the other incidents on the UC campuses reflect the fact that we are not one, big, happy, melting pot after all. Some people will never let this be.

Woodrow Wilson previewed the Film, "Birth of a Nation" at the Whitehouse. He signed the FED into law. He got us into WW I. I see an enduring pattern there.

"I spoke to a UCSD student yesterday. She is Israeli. She is really frightened about the Compton party, the nooses, and the KKK hood."

This Compton cookout was PUT ON by a BLACK MAN. And the noose was done by someone who identified themselves as a PERSON OF COLOR. Given that most likely the hood WAS NOT an act of white racists.
Having said that, your Jewish friend didn't mention being frightened about the swastika that was found carved into the door of a Jewish student's door at one UC school and 3 swastika's found at another UC school? I suspect your post, like the noose incident, is a hoax.

............."This Compton cookout was PUT ON by a BLACK MAN. "

No, it was NOT.

Stop trying to push stormfront "facts" as actual facts, bigot.

Chickens coming home to roost. Contrary to its well-crafted PR that the media seems to swallow in whole cloth, the UC is a very exclusionary system with an admissions system that is cleverly designed to allow only a trickle of black and brown students into the UC, and they park most of them on the UC Riverside campus, literally and metaphorically on the other side of the tracks.

How come usually nothing is said about the disabled. They make up a minority population and have cognitive abilities that are capable to graduate from college. My mother had polio is in a wheelchair, immigrated from mexico, went to college and was able to marry and raise children.

Their are very few disabled people on college campuses, I feel they should also be included in minority rhetoric.

The admissions system, as are the universities overall, controlled by left college administrators. They are elitists wanting only those that think like they do.

This elitist rhetoric is getting tiring. Honestly, are you trying to convince people that those right wingers who own half dozen of mansions and an array of luxury cars are not elitist?Unless, of course, your definition of elitist is anyone who is not as ig.orant as people like sarah palin lol...

Wrong! Unless you attended the University of California and/or worked there, how would you know?

But it is worth noting that the Right wanted to split the students from the blue collar workers in the late Sixties. That's why so many became Yuppies and sold out to the estatblishment. Those same former students are now facing lose of the retirement savings, equity in their homes and potential seize of Medicare and Social Security funds.

The racism is either a bunch of right wing fraternity brats or outside agents trying to defuse real change in our system. Where were you?

I was working at and attending UCLA in the Sixties and early Seventies.

People get overly excited about these events and I am saying this as a black man. For all we know, it was some crazy high school kids or local lowlife just playing a prank. This event should not be a reflection of the student body or the administration's efforts to protect the student body whether the offending person was a student or not.
03:43 PM on 03/03/2010
Regardless of whether this was a prank or not, the reactions of anger and fear to it are REAL.

I agree with you supergenius. I'm Jewish and when I went to college there were several instances of anti-semetic graphetti, including a swastika. Of course I was unnerved and hurt BUT you find the same problems on a campus that you find in the rest of the world- crime, sexism, racism, homophobia, antisemitism, etc. How could I blame the school for the actions of one or two people? Bad seeds are found everywhere. How could I expect the school to create a place where I feel 100% safe? I don't believe such as place exists for any of us. The school owes it to students to have security, but they can't keep all negative elements of the real world from coming in time to time any more than the police are able to prevent all crimes from happening. I heard the BSU wanted to shut down the campus because they felt unsafe. Really, of all the black people in SD that are the victims of violent crime in the past year, how many were the acts of white racists? Probably very, very few if any.
There is nowhere on earth that we can have our safety 100% guarenteed regardless of our race, religion, gender, etc.
06:04 AM on 03/03/2010
You know, Audrey Geisel, the widow of Theodore Geisel, was called this morning and told that a white pillow case in the form of racist insignia was placed on her late husband's statue on his birthday.

As it turns out Audrey Geisel was actually quite forgiving and said of UCSD: “The vast, vast majority (of students) are just the greatest — they’re just splendid, fine, period.”
09:47 AM on 03/03/2010
It's amazing how the action of a single or a few people reflect so poorly on the hard working and honest majority. Your post says it all.

You mean that the so-called minorities are carving swastikas in their own doors and crying racism. How many of these race hoaxes have to happen before people realize that they are all fake.

And to think-there are people who would claim that we live in a 'post-racial society' and that 'racism isn't an issue anymore.'

Shows what THEY know. I knew they were idiots, but really... how can this be viewed as anything BUT racist?

Doesn't matter WHO did it; the fact was, it was done. And it was wrong. And I can only hope that those involved will be appropriately punished.
03:13 AM on 03/03/2010
How do you know all these acts aren't the work of an organization to cause chaos in America.

Honestly ..... Think before you react.

Whens the best time to create a revolution? When the economy is weak, when people are out of work and desperate, budget and services being cut, etc....

This looks like the work of the anarchists, communists or even terrorism. It's organized. It's showing up all of a sudden. Doesn't that stike you as peculiar? It's meant to divide the classes and races. Don't fall for it.
03:33 AM on 03/03/2010
Riiiight.

Got any evidence to support that?

This is hardly 'all of a sudden'. This took place during Black History Month and is in part, a result of that stupid party that took place at that college. One thing led to another and... well, here we are.

This isn't a conspiracy-this is plain ignorance and prejudice rearing it's ugly head. Racism is NOT a thing of the past. It's STILL HERE and this is proof of that. Anyone who dismisses it for what it is only contributes and perpetuates it.

In short: drop the moon-battery. This isn't a conspiracy, it's the act of morons thinking this is funny and 'nothing to get worked up about'. Well, it ISN'T funny and the people who did it will hopefully get what's coming to them.
04:11 AM on 03/03/2010
Riiiighhht.

Care to provide evidence that supports that?

Because there are other, more effective ways to do it. Causing racial tension is NOT one of them.

Racism is STILL a fact in this country and the rest of the world, NOT a thing of the past. The dopes who did this probably thought it was no big deal and likely thought they were being funny. Well, it's NOT. It's serious and is a prosecutable hate crime. Racism is a reality, NOT a 'conspiracy theory'.

In short; drop the moon-battery.

Let's see--a black comic sets up the private party off campus, a white fraternity gets blamed; a "minority" student left a noose on campus, the news fails to report that part of the story and the U suddenly stops talking about hate crime prosecution; and now someone puts a pillow case over Dr. Seuss--almost certainly an ironic act. Seriously, folks, this is the largest and silliest manufactured "crisis" in a long time. It certainly DOES matter who did it. And given all the hype, the hoaxes will continue.
07:56 PM on 03/03/2010
It doesn't matter who did it. It does not change the symbolism.

it's hardly 'silly' when students of every racial denomination is afraid for their safety and angry at the lack of action.
12:35 AM on 03/03/2010
I'm also very upset that the the pillow case that represents racist insignia was placed on the statue of Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) on his birthday. This is a real low to desecrate the author of childrens' books that we all know of.

He was also a political cartoonist as described from the Wiki:

"As World War II began, Geisel turned to political cartoons, drawing over 400 in two years as editorial cartoonist for the left-wing New York City daily newspaper, PM. Geisel's political cartoons, later published in Dr. Seuss Goes to War, opposed the viciousness of Hitler and Mussolini . . .'

I hope they close em all, and have a bona-fide educator give a free public class on what 'education' is, and is not. Right now, by all appearances, the students have a lot of free time and money...what kind of a little pot party are they running, there? Maybe it's time to stop the taxpayer abuse.

The Ku Klux Klan 'doesn't exist'??? Southern Poverty Law Group, numerous civil rights organizations AND the FBI beg to differ.

gee . . . like the big deal made about Abu Grab . .

"Rush Limbaugh justified the U.S. guards' mistreatment of the Iraqis, stating that they were just 'having a good time,' and that their actions served as an 'emotional release'."

so then . . . who cares if some rambunctious rascals grabbed dad's hood and copied it? . . . just good clean white fun!!!!!
03:00 AM on 03/03/2010
I think you are misunderstanding me. I still think it's an extremely hateful action whoever did it, not implying it's funny at all. I meant hoax in the context that it may not have been an actual "white power" member or whoever that planted it there (but it just as easily could've on the other hand. just speculation here) But considering there was an incident with a noose "accidentally" left in the library already and a minority student admitted to putting it there, it's not really that far of a stretch that someone might've done the same sort of thing again to get a reaction and stir up the campus even further. Whatever the case and whoever it is though, it seems like UCSD students have too much time on their hands if they are pulling nasty stunts like this.

Analytical thinking. Surely there's a course. Limbaugh was ignoring a real crime. What transpired on UCSD's campus was a hoax.
