Johnny Weir Responds To 'Too Gay' Comments On Joy Behar Show (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/03/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:40 PM ET

Johnny Weir, the flamboyant U.S. Olympic figure skater, appeared on "The Joy Behar Show" last night and addressed the comments that he is "too gay" for figure skating and that remarks by Canadian commentators that he "needed a gender test." He told Behar that

everyone is different... they never talk about anyone being too butch for figure skating.

I just wish they would think before they actually said it. There are so many kids like me, coming after me, whose parents might repress them just because they saw what they said about me, that their kids are going to turn out like me. And I think me is pretty fabulous.

Behar agreed that Weir was fabulous and said she loved his "Snooki" hairdo. Weir gently corrected her that it was actually Marie Antoinette.

He and Behar shared a funny moment when she brought up the "too gay" comments as he slyly murmured back to her, "too gay." Behar laughed and replied "figure skating -- hello!"

I'd prefer watching Johnny figure skate any day than say, Evan Lysacek, the technician, who is arrogant and exudes no genuine passion.

NO ONE can tell whether Johnny goes so flamboyant in reaction to the hurt -- the hurt of having been called names all his life -- or for other reasons. It's too late, the hurt has been given, and keeps being given.

OTHERS in oppressed minorities have been know to act out and be "too Jewish", "overly Black", or whatever.

IT HURTS TO BE DIFFERENT.....
AND IT HURTS WORSE TO WORK HARD, EXCELL AT A TOUGH PHYSICAL SPORT, AND HEAR SOME YAHOO USE YOU TO SAY STUFF THAT MAY HURT YOUNGER GAY KIDS.
(Anyone here not believe that young boys who would like to figure skate are pushed to play hockey?)

"Too gay" is too subjective. They are suggesting that gay is alright, but there's a certain level of gayness that must not be breached? What nonsense.

Gay or not ---he's much more attractive than Ben Roethlisberger to SOME of us artistic ladies and mens.

I've wondered why the cross-dressers we see in the media on talk shows, besides being mostly straight, are rarely very feminine. It's kind of a paradox.

Johnny Weir is an embarrassment to gay people everywhere. I hate when people put on acts like his.

Silly. What acts? He is who he is. Would you rather he adopt a "straight acting" persona? Would that be more to your comfort? Leave him be. When did he claim was a spokesperson for all gay people everywhere? He's just been speaking, rightly and courageously so, on what was a personal attack on him by those commentators. On the flipside you yourself, by making that statement, are posing as a representative a whole community. If you've got a personal opinion stand up and say it don't veil it by saying it's what everyone, purportedly, feels. I hate when people do that.

Exactly. He's very confident in being himself. Just because acting 'straight' is done by more men doesn't mean it's not an act. It's just more common and familiar.

I worked in a hospital emergency room and some of the biggest sissies were big, jock types when it came to getting blood drawn or moving them with a broken leg or whatever. The little, old ladies were some of the toughest.

Is Laudon Wainwright an embarrassment? Barney Frank, Antony Hagerty, and others? I don't watch Johnny, I don't like his routine or him; however, he certainly should not be an embarrassment.

Laudon ? .. don't you mean Rufus ?

I'm not sure what "too gay" means, but I do get tired of this guy's flamboyance. Flamboyancy? Whatever, this guy is just too on fire all the time. Turn down the flames Johnny, it gets tiring and boring.

Too flamboyant? Uhhh, it was the Olympic figure skating event. Nearly every figure skater is flamboyant. That’s partly what the entertainment business is about. You don’t mention Jerry Rice or Emmitt Smith on Dancing with the Stars. They had some pretty “gay” looking outfits and did some “gay” looking moves. I saw Adam Lambert on television the other night. Was he too gay looking and flamboyant with all his makeup?

When you say he’s “too on fire all the time”, is that when you see him grocery shopping or at the mall? Maybe, you go bar hopping with him?

He is what he is and should continue to be what he is. He shouldn’t have to conform to anyone’s prejudiced lifestyle.

Nonsense. I've known plenty of gay men in my time, and nearly all of them dressed and acted like anybody else. There are always a few, like Johnny Weir, who have that over-the-top act, and they are practically screaming "look at me, look at me." It's not about him being gay, it's about showing off his insecurities as a person, and I'm old enough and experienced enough to recognize it for what it is. I see the same behavior manifested in heterosexuals in other ways (Madonna, Lady Gaga, etc.) and I don't like it from them either. Most of us want to just go on with our lives, and we resent people (gay or not) who insist that we interrupt our flow to look at whatever nonsense their spewing.

By the way, I am not prejudiced against gays in any way. I happen to be a very strong advocate for gay marriage, and I think it is one of America's shames that people are fighting so hard against it.

Johnny is a terrific athlete, but also a superb performer. A man of many talents, as Scott Hamilton put it. He's also smart and I applaud him for speaking up so eloquently against stale old notions of gender and sexuality. Go Johnny!

It's not too gay until Will Ferrell shows up, then it's a sequel.

Saying someone is too gay for figure skating is like saying someone is too thin for eating.

Too "gay" to be an incredible skater and artist? Forget them---Go, Johnny, go!!!!

JW is great. I hope he is as strong as he seems and is not being torn up inside by these cretins. We need more role models like him calling out the stupidity of intolerance.
