Victoria's Secret, Bloomingdale's Resell USED Underwear (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/03/2010 5:12 am Updated: 05/25/2011 3:40 pm

This just in from the Department of Ew: Your favorite lingerie shop might be reselling USED underwear. In a "Today Show: Secret Filth Exposed!" segment, reporters purchased underwear and bathing suits from eight popular retail stores, removed the tags and even stained them with baby oil, and then tested which stores would take the items and put them back on the shelf. Although the practice isn't necessarily illegal, there could be health implications. Check out this super-gross, but super-important clip.

I wash everything before I wear it....one never knows

That's what laundry detergent is for. $tup1d investigative story because everyone knows this happens. If for anything, department stores should have a policy of no return/no exchange of undergarments; everything should be final sale. They should be exposing the 1d10ts that return undergarments instead of department store or retailers.

What's gross AND illegal is when thieves swap their panties for ours--they wear ours out of the store (I'm assuming) and leave theirs behind in the dressing room. BLECH!!

why are people worried about this, but then you get into a public swimming pool? what do you think is floating around in all that water?

just wash your purchases and get over it.

I'll tell you what's in that water - chlorine. That's why there aren't huge epidemics among the patrons of swimming pools.

you really think the folks taking care of the pool are doing enough to deal with the bodies swimming around, the little kids who aren't potty trained, etc...alrighty then! enjoy your swim!!!

if you're not sure, watch south park's episode, "Pee". it will explain everything ;) .

This is exactly why I would never purchase intimate apparel in a department store! My town has an amazing specialty bathing suit store (called Great Shapes) and I buy all my stuff there - including the best underwear! They do allow returns on any of that stuff because it's simply gross! Check and see if you have a Great Shapes store near you -- I highly recommend it!!!

correction - I meant - they do NOT allow returns on any of that stuff!!!!

The least they could do is let you know who's used undies you are buying.

I thought everyone washed newly purchased clothing before they wore it. I don't even wear a t-shirt or jeans until they've been laundered.

Not a problem, I don't know any woman who doesn't launder not only the underwear she purchases but also her linens before she uses them. It's also a good idea to have heavier clothing dry cleaned before wearing them. Certain fabrics contain chemicals that retain not only germs, but allergens that are removed AFTER drycleaning. It's an old practice but every woman I know does it. The very fact that other people have so much as handled the items are enough reason to wash them before using them.

I wash anything I buy before wearing it or using it, no matter what. It baffles me that people wouldn't do this, but not necessarily for panty-filth reasons-- rather because of all the nasty chemicals on them such as flame retardants, formaldehyde, etc.

Society in general has no problem with people putting their mouth on other people's privates in intimate situations, in some cases, people you've only known for all of a few hours, and yet it's a huge, disgusting scandal the idea of wearing mildly used underwear.
02:26 AM on 03/04/2010
Not that I'm in favour of wearing mildly used underwear obviously...

I just find the societal cognitive dissonance interesting.

Why is one a social taboo and not the other?

"I just find the societal cognitive dissonance interesting.

Why is one a social taboo and not the other?"
------

What do social "taboos" have to do with anything? Do you not get what a "social taboo" is? It's something that society is against because it finds it finds it culturally offensive-- i.e, it violates its standards of what it considers inappropriate or moral.

This situation has nothing to do with social taboos; this is a simple question of hygiene. The analogy between oral sex and used underwear doesn't even make sense, anyway. You might as well argue, "I don't understand why people find the idea of strangers spitting on them disgusting when they French kiss their loved ones all the time."

Huh?
