UPDATED: America's LARGEST Tuition Increases in PUBLIC Schools (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 05/04/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 04:35 PM ET

It's not the schools notorious for their high tuition rates -- George Washington University, New York University, Sarah Lawrence College -- on this list. Rather it's the large, public universities that are seeing staggering increases of up to 32 percent, adding to mounting student debt. Is the collegiate sticker shock worth it? How much has your school's tuition increased? E-mail us!

Georgia's 35 colleges and universities will make up to $300 million dollars in budget cuts. Though there was initially talk of a 77 percent increase in tuition, the most recently presented plan includes a 35 percent tuition increase on top of a raise in student fees, consolidation of schools, salary cuts and shorter semester schedules. To think that I believe California offered virtually free college back in the 1960's, and where we are now?

We need to rethink education. Do most of us really need years of advanced math, in high school and college? Years of biology?

Respect kids. Let them choose more of what to study. They do not get as discouraged, they will have better grades and like school more, they will learn more.

The serious math and science students can have smaller, better classes.
It would make far more sense to study the internet or weatherization of homes than cut up a frog!

I wonder why they didn't mention The Ohio State University. OSU has raised tuition 6.5% and now there's a "student activity fee" that you have to pay whether you attend the "student activities" (i.e., football games) or not.

I think that is payment for calling it The Ohio State University instead of just Ohio State University. There is a premium for the "The".

You people are so freaking dumb it's incredible. You'll always find yourselves in this situation because your unfettered biases toward the right is unchangeable. You have absolutely no idea why costs are so high, do you?

First off, the HEA program which is another lovely government program set up by the liberals. GET EDUCATED YOU DUNCES!!! If you want to start to figure your life, this is a good starting point and the reason for your higher education:

http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=3344

Next, if you idiots weren't so wrapped up in watching MSNBC and reading the leftist papers this country has be able to fill the cracks of stupidity with at every turn, then you'd understand that this recent 'health care' bill that just passed is ANYTHING BUT health care! It's got more to do with education than health care! A small portion to cover the costs of your FREE HEALTH CARE will be coming from higher education costs you goofballs! How much? Hard to say but as much as $2000 a year, per student is the consensus. So keep voting left, keep listening to your babbling leftist, commie teachers and keep paying higher education costs. In fact, the best thing this health care bill could have done was to raise the cost of schools, this way the students have a chance at growing up without becoming brainwashed communists by our teachers since they won't be able to attend school!

idea: for schools that use lottery funds to award "merit" scholarships--trim the student body:

1. Be sure there's a needs-based element to the award formula--say lower 50% of household incomes in the state. The upper half will be more likely to consider out-of-state/private institutions.

2. Be sure that the GPA is not the only benchmark for the award. Some type of standardized test must be factored in. Currently, massive grade inflation practically invalidates increasingly costly "college educations" gained at any other than a state's most prominent schools.

3. Consider using any saved lottery funds to fund academic programs so that students who remain will face only limited increases.

thank you, governor arnold

Well actually thank you prison guard union and the legislature. Arnold actually trying to reduce spending on prisons but was way out spent. If the legislature cut appropriations for prisons and transferred prisoners to lower cost, out of state or private prisons...Arnold would sign the bill in a minute.

Utterly deplorable. I suggest all college-age students either attend community college or (if financially able) move to Europe where post-secondary education is largely free. The tuition for my first year at Northern Illinois University was $732 for 12+ credit hours. Now it's $3120, and it's almost sure to rise given that the state of Illinois is in such financial jeopardy. God help the young people nowadays.
