The Cutest Pygmy Animals (PHOTOS)

What is it about small animals that puts us in the mood to say, "awww?" In the case of these pygmy animals it might be because they are much more rare than their standard-sized relatives. Some of these pygmies are pocket-sized while others are big enough to carry a human being, but all of them are adorable. Check them out and vote for your favorites.

Pygmy Owl
1 of 10
There are several different species of the Pygmy Owl, some of which are referred to as "owlets." The Ferruginous Pygmy Owl pictured here breeds in Arizona, Mexico, and a few other locations in South and Central America. This owl only grows to be about 6 inches high, about the same size as a sparrow.

I'm glad they added that the African pygmy hedgehog is a domestic cross breed. :) Yay for doing research!

We bought a pygmy mamma goat with two babies years ago. We fell absolutely in love. We ended having a total of 7 that we bought almost right away. There is absolutely nothing like a baby pygmy goat. They are little clowns and their energy is amazing. Once they become adults, all it takes is lots of love and attention, and they behave like dogs. They are amazingly intelligent and sweet. They really get attached to you. But then, again, you need to love them and pay attention to them. As with dogs, if neglected, their spirits die a bit.

Don't go with the hedge hog. My son had one, just died of old age at 5 years recently. Not friendly, prickly, active at night not day so will keep you awake all night if in the same room. Novel but pointless pet..

I'm sorry your hedgie wasn't very friendly :( Unfortunately, most pet store hedgehogs aren't very friendly. They've gotten much better in recent years, though. They've only been kept as pets for a couple decades now, and responsible breeders are breeding for personality first of all.

My hedgie wasn't super friendly at first, and even now he's not all that friendly with anyone but me (or the cats... he loves the cats lol) but if you work with them, they'll open up! As for the nocturnal thing, well, lots of cute lil' critters are like that (hamsters, for one) and these days they make wonderful silent wheels.

Anyway, again, I'm sorry things didn't go well with your hedge-friend, but I just don't want others to be discouraged by your bad experience with these cute lil' critters. They're not for everyone, but I love my lil' guy.

I had a friend who had a kitten that never grew - it was 10 years old and looked 6 weeks old. It would climb up your leg and sit on your shoulder!
