Americans Admit Interrupting Sex To Answer Cell Phones (INFOGRAPHIC)

First Posted: 05/08/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:45 PM ET

How obsessed are we with our phones? According to an infographic from CellPhones.org, very.

The colorful image (see below) brings together impressive statistics that highlight our relationship with our mobile devices and how we use them, from how often people 'sext' to the quantity of radiation emitted during cell phone use.

Here are a few highlights from the infographic:

  • 15% of Americans have interrupted sex to answer a cell phone call.
  • Approximately 4.2 million people are having a cell phone conversation somewhere in the world at any given second.
  • 32% of men and 23% of women say they can't live without their cell phone.

While 15% of Americans admit to putting hook ups on hold, another study, by Retrevo, reports that 36% of people under 35 confess to checking Facebook, texting, or Tweeting directly after having sex.

Cell phones facilitate this insta-sharing. As we wrote here, the study found 'guys are twice as likely as women to use social media after sex, and that iPhone users are three times more likely to check Twitter or Facebook after "doing the deed" than Blackberry users.'

> 15% of Americans have interrupted sex to answer a cell phone call.

Wow, and I thought texting while having a conversation with someone was rude...

I think the biggest reason for this pathetic state of affairs (no pun intended) is stated right within the article..."hook-ups"

While cheap sex may be physically satisfying, it is *not* emotionally satisfying, let alone intellectually or spiritually, and people who do engage in frequent hook ups, either outside of real relationships or in place of, are just starving for real attention once the physical act is over.

So they head to facebook, email, etc, looking for it. Another cheap hook up, but it's emotional. Of course, that's not satisfying either, and so the cycle of the modern American life goes on....

Some medical personel are on call, so they HAVE to answer their calls!

Sounds like 15% were already looking for an excuse to interrupt it.

People need to learn to turn the damm things off. We don't need to broadcast our every waking moment on twitter and facebook, nor do we need to be reachable 24/7. If somebody calls they can leave a message.

People are addicted to their d@mned cell phones.
When 90% of whatever they discuss seems utter tripe to me I still gotta wonder why I see men answer their phones while standing at the urinal.
Why is this?
Do cell phone frequencies release endorphins in the brain?
I'm looking into this as I seriously cannot understand why people are addicted to their phones!!!

It's because they want to believe they are important.
They are not.

"# 15% of Americans have interrupted sex to answer a cell phone call. "

There may be less here than meets the eye. This line doesn't say these people habitually do this. It just says that these folks have done it at least once. And that could be for a whole variety of reasons.

As for that 20 or so percent who say they can't live without your cell phones, well, what does that mean? Are these mostly people who are exclusive cell users (in other words, no land line)? How many of them are in businesses where they do have to be connected all the times? And how many of these are just attention whores who validate their existence with their devices?

This article isn't that illuminating.

Maybe occasionally, if a call is expected. We also interrupt sex when a child knocks on the bedroom door. We take care of them, then get right back to it...

OK, amazing stats (even beyond the sex one, which of course, grabs the headlines - as it should!). 9 of 10 Americans having used a cell phone, and the teen stats - wowsy stuff!

Maybe their sex is incredibly boring and see it as a welcome diversion... No that's not possible...

Bingo! They'd interrupt sex to watch paint dry on TV.

At three community colleges here in California, there are signs posted on classroom whiteboards instructing students to turn off their cellphones and store them out of sight. Unfortunately, cellular addiction is widespread. Some students cannot bear to spend even an hour without being in touch.

Generally, there is a direct correlation between lower grades and classroom cellular usage. Even that does not deter most cellular addicts. Unable to openly text message, one student left class for the hallway recently and spent thirty minutes sorting out a relationship problem.

If these students spent the same amount of time reading their assigned textbook selections, they most likely would be superior students.

Perhaps if their instructors were more interesting and interested their students would be engaged and enthralled......

How could you have sex with someone who would even consider stopping to answer a phone unless it was critical. I would hate to be be that tied down.
12:25 PM on 03/08/2010
It is called multitasking.
02:27 PM on 03/08/2010
Well, did you ever stop to think that if you weren't 'tied down,' you could actually stop your partner from answering the phone? (sorry, couldn't resist....)

I would hazard a guess that the 15 percent that said they have interupted sex to answer their cell are single. And I would also guess that they will stay that way for a LONG time. Think about it....the first time a lover does that it would be the last time for most people.
