Howard Stern: Gabourey Sidibe Is 'Enormous,' Will Never Work Again

What's Your Reaction?

Howard Stern unleashed a vicious attack on Gabourey Sidibe on his Sirius satellite show on Monday.

"There's the most enormous, fat black chick I've ever seen. She is enormous. Everyone's pretending she's a part of show business and she's never going to be in another movie," he said. "She should have gotten the Best Actress award because she's never going to have another shot. What movie is she gonna be in?"

He and co-host Robin Quivers went on to discuss the impossibility of Gabby finding any work in Hollywood after 'Precious.'

"And Oprah's lying and saying you're going to have a brilliant career," said Robin.

"Oprah's another liar, a filthy liar," said Stern. "She's telling an enormous woman the size of a planet that she's going to have a career."

It looks like Gabby will prove Stern wrong. She is lined up to appear on the new Showtime series 'The C Word' and her next big-screen appearance will be opposite Zoe Kravitz in the drama 'Yelling to the Sky.'

Howard's approach to Gabby's situation was a little rough. But I have seen Howard criticize his OWN staff for obesity, bad eating and other destructive habits. He's not always nurturing when he points these things out, but Howard was is usually dispensing good advice. By any measure both Howard and Robin have led successful lives, so it is not unreasonable to say that they can offer good life advice. Anyone with 15 minutes of fame is approached by someone skilled in capitalizing off the flash: S. Palin, the Jersey Shore kids etc.

Gabby is hot for the moment but by next year, the roles will dry up. On countless occasions I've heard Howard tell actors going through a spike in popularity: Save your money, keep your head on straight and don't start turning down roles because you think you're too big for them. He knows how transient fame can be and the value of remaining in the public eye by ongoing practice of your craft.Consider this: Even before Sirius, Stern was worth over 100 million. Still, he got up every day at 4am and went to work 5 days a week. Most never give him credit for it, but he has strong work ethic uncommon in celebrities. He demands that ethic from his staff and offers that same advice to celebrities he interviews. If he tells Gabby: hold onto her cash, lose weight and take advantage of the publicity she has now, it's good advice.

Stern didn't say she'd never work again...he said that she will probably never been the lead in another film because Hollywood doesn't cast obese women in lead roles (which is pretty much true).

I'm a huge Stern fan and I thought he was spot on in his take on it. He even gave great examples of women who were once leading ladies in film: Kirstie Alley for example, who will be nothing more than a supporting actress in the future (in Film). Even the fact that rather than cast an obese woman for Shallow Hal Hollywood put Skinny Gwynnie in a fat suit.

That's all he was saying.
Stern Rules. Baba Booey, baby.

someone PLEASE tell me what he said that is wrong! how could she possibly ever be considered a "leading woman"? did she do a good job, for sure - BUT who is oprah fooling? if she doesn't personally put her into a role - what is she suited to do?? if she is such an incredible talent then lose some weight and make yourself marketable. i do listen to howard and he wasn't bashing, just not afraid to say what many are thinking. if oprah really wants to help her, get her to a nutritionist and a personal trainer. is she not a heart attack waiting to happen?? listen to what he is saying and not how and who said it!

Howard Stern is a d**k, but he's paid to be, and he really does have a point here. How many decent roles do you see for black actresses, period, let alone morbidly obese black actresses? In fact, how many roles do you see for morbidly obese actresses, period? Mo'Nique and Roseanne Barr are as fat as you can get in Hollywood and still have a career, and Mo'Nique's for the most part been relegated to playing the Sassy/Ignorant/Loud Fat Black Woman in garbage like "Soul Plane" until "Precious," while Roseanne lost the weight (and the career). Anyone who believes that Ms. Sidibe's talent will outweigh her looks hasn't been living in the real world and paying attention to Hollywood, where a starlet who goes from a 4 to a 6 ends up on the cover of In Touch with "FAT!" stamped across her butt.

And please don't act like a role in "Yelling To The Sky" totally debunks Stern's statement; it's some borderline straight-to-DVD cliche'd "ghetto girl coming of age" snoozer with a cast of thousands, and she's the most famous person in it, unless you want to count Lenny Kravitz's daughter, or Marisa Tomei's brother. Which you don't.

Howard Stern, you have a lot of nerve! Have you looked in the mirror lately? Don't degrade anyone brother! Ms Sidibe is very talented and her talent will take her far. It is quite evident that Hollywood doesn't salvage genuine talent because the bottom line is the dollar. Stop bad mouthing the young lady and comb your hair, get a nose job and learn to respect others! You're disgusting.

Oh wow. Howard Stern? I guess he still hasn't figured out that nobody really gives a s**t what he thinks. What a sad and pathetic *little* man.

I don't agree with him entirely but he does raise some good points. I found the Oprah clip more annoying than Stern. "how did you find this character when you yourself are so happy?" Oprah is a joke. She doesn't think this girl has been made fun of or hasn't experienced pain? Give me a break.

What he says is less important than how he says it: with a high-school-bully-like cruelty that pays his bills but, I'm guessing, doesn't exactly rack up giant karma points for him (as though it mattered to him).
gfcedillo   12:48 AM on 3/15/2010
I'd rather see a movie with Miss Gabourey Sidibe than to listen to the all-time trash of the Stern (or Stir my .+-*/) Howard. He ain't worth what goes in the toilet bowl.

hypothetical. let's say there was this actress who had the same temperament and the same nice, sweet, effervescent demeanor as a gabourey sidibe, but instead of being obese she was unhealthily thin suffering from a severe case of anorexia. now, would you and the general public still be this angry about what he said if it was directed towards that type of starlet? and would you or the public still be this angry, having the same level of anger and moral contempt for what he said, if he expressed the same sentiment towards these hollywood people trying to delude the girl into thinking she still looks beautiful and has a bright future despite her unhealthy thinness and sapped, sallowly, drawn complexion and torpidly, anemic, frame? why is one lethally fatal dietary lifestyle deserving of a protected status while the other isn't?

it's alright to be honest and say that a woman who suffers from anorexia looks disgusting and unattractive but when it comes to the obese that's taboo, it's forbidden, it even reaches the distinguished status of being morally contemptible. what is this arbitrarily drawn line separating the two unhealthy physical extremes?

I find his comment unacceptable because he played the race card. If he had only talked about Gabourey's size/weight, it would have shown bad taste; but when he said that "she's the fattest, BLACK.......", that was totally unacceptable. I guarantee you that if the woman was white (and anorexic, anemic etc) he would not have included her race. Why does he have to categorize everyone?

Whoever that side kick of his is...........she has a problem also! Now I know why I don't listen to his show! There's more to his stupid statement than what you realize.

To the PC army already wringing their hands and gasping in horror I'd say there's a ring of truth in what Howard Stern is saying (though he DOES take things a bit too far sometimes).

Sidibie simply got that role because that's exactly what the producers where looking for (and I shan't mince my words here): A large - unfortunately - overweight fat African-American Girl. That's EXACTLY what the role required in the first place.

Yes of course she's gonna get some minor roles here and there: probably as comic relief or the usual stereotypical roles Holywood shamelessly reserves for her particular demographic (and size of course!!).

I hope that served as a reality check that it's buisness as usual in Holywood and if Ms. Sidbie wants to take advantage of her new-found fame she'd better do exactly what Mr. Stern in telling her to do:
LAY OFF THE CROISSANTS AND THE HAGENDAAS!!!!

Again, Howard was taken out of context. The conversation was about Gabourey Sidibe being obese. The conversation was about a young girl in a VERY unhealthy situation, putting herself at risk of diabetes, heart disease...
Howard and Robin were talking about a strange phenomenon presently going on - extremely overweight famous people (AKA people capable of influencing others) saying it is alright to be big. It is alright to have some extra weight, but obesity kills, and THAT is not alright.

Howard, you silly schmuck...
After seeing Gabby on "The Soup" with Joel McHale, let me be the first to congratulate Ms. Sidibe. She is one of the funniest, most natural comediennes I've heard in looooooong time. She has a bright future because she has talent.
ldstep   07:33 AM on 3/13/2010
I am an African American woman so this has nothing to do with race. Sidibe is truly fooling herself. I agree with Howard....she is disgusting to look at. She could not possibly convince anyone that she's happy with her appearance. GET REAL!! Along with that she is horrible in interviews. TOTALLY TACKY!!! NO CLASS WHATSOEVER. If OPRAH or Tyler Perry plans on offering their assistance to Sidibe in the future then I hope they'll start off by being honest with themselves. Since Oprah has gained SO MUCH weight it apparently has blinded her when it comes to Sidibe. Quit fooling yourself Oprah!! Offer this girl some really serious guidance. NOT PITY.
Hagar7   12:05 AM on 3/27/2010
Oprah doesn't need to be giving anyone guidance on weight loss. The woman is a mogul, but she is completely insane when it comes to her weight. She is forever following fads and whatever Hollywood flavor of the month foolishness she stumbles across -- with all of her personal chefs and personal trainers, she somehow has yet to find a sensible eating and exercise life plan, which is why when she loses weight, she can't keep it off. She can serve as a cautionary tale, maybe, but Ms. Sidibe needs to talk to doctors; she is dangerously, morbidly obese, and she is looking at a truly terrifying, life-threatening array of health problems if she doesn't knock off a good 100 pounds soon.

first of all nobody believes that you are a black woman, so i dont know who ;you think you are fooling.
Second of all. Let's see what happens..... things are certainly changing......maybe she will get some good acting jobs in spite of her size. Stranger things have happened. like Barak Obama becoming our President. Who would have thought. let's put some positive prayers out there for her. Lots of luck Sidibe
