Marie Osmond: My Mormon Faith Got Me Through Son's Death

Marie Osmond Mormon

OSKAR GARCIA   03/10/10 07:36 AM ET   AP

LAS VEGAS — Marie Osmond told a Las Vegas Strip audience as she returned to the stage less than two weeks after her son's apparent suicide that she has relied on her spirituality to cope with his death

"Little did I know I would be relying on my faith, especially as much as I did this past week," Osmond said before dedicating a song to her 18-year-old son, Michael Bryan, whom she called "my angel."

Wrapped in a robe with white feathers that resembled an angel's wings, Osmond genuflected and reached out her right hand as she sang the song amid a starry backdrop.

"How she got through that I will never know," her brother Donny Osmond said after his sister's solo performance.

"I hope you all appreciate what she's going through tonight," he said. "She's a strong woman."

The Osmonds' teary return to the Flamingo Las Vegas on Tuesday night came one day after funeral services for Bryan in Provo, Utah.

Donny Osmond described his sister as strong for simply showing up.

"I just think that we need to give a big round of applause to my sister for even coming onstage tonight," Donny Osmond said after the siblings' opening number.

"Don't do that – I'm going to have to leave," Marie Osmond quipped as the crowd roared in support.

"God bless you all," she said. "The way Osmonds survive is we keep singing and that's what we want to do tonight. I know my son would want that."

The Donny & Marie show resumed before an eager audience that was overwhelmingly supportive of Marie's songs and jokes, as well as a dance-off against her brother, last season's winner of "Dancing With the Stars."

Their sibling banter wasn't spared as they ribbed one another – and themselves – throughout the show about their ages, voices and fitness.

"Thank you, papers, for putting in that I'm 50," Marie Osmond said. "The female F-word – '50.'"

Marie Osmond said her 7-year-old daughter told her that she needed to laugh Tuesday night, so she told her a joke.

"Why was the sand wet," the mother recalled. "Because the sea weed."

Police in Los Angeles have said Bryan died Feb. 26 of an apparent suicide after jumping from the eighth floor of an apartment building. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending.

Police said Bryan left a note but they have not provided details about its contents.

Bryan previously used his adoptive father's last name, Blosil, but Utah court records show his name was legally changed.

At the end of the Osmonds' sentimental return, Marie Osmond cried as she struggled to sing her last line.

"May God keep you in his tender care," Donny Osmond sang, before telling his sister: "You don't have to sing this part."

"'Til he brings us together again," she sang.

She put on "angel wings" and performed at the funeral...am I hearing this right? Is there no occurance in this woman's life that she will not use for self-aggrandizment? How does a mother take to the stage made-up to the nines and perform at her son's funeral? After he just killed himself? Wow. And her family and fans think that this is really cool? We are so doomed. Boy, you start to see what was up with the kid though.

Not the funeral, but she made her son's death part of her and Donny's Las Vegas act. But you are right about the self aggrandizement part. It is amazing how many people are defending this as expressing her grief..

Its and old, old story many of these Hollywood people Joan Crawford, Marie, Mia Farrow and others adopted for publicity. Many of their kids told a very different story to how they actually ended up being treated away from the cameras. Some of these kids were just used as props to enhance fading careers or get good PR, once the cameras were off them, they were treated like the props that no longer had any use.

Sounds like its the same for Marie.

So, apparently I'm not the only one who finds it extremely disturbing that Marie performed so quickly and made it all about her. I really can not stand her constant self promotion. All of her appearances are full of drama. Why is she anything? She's a sucky singer. Who in the world pays to see her? She really milked the "oh, I was abused" fabrication, I mean story. If my son had just died, I would be on the floor for months, and I'm not talking about the stage floor. Shame on her, and the rest of the egotistic Osmonds.

I'll probably get a lot of folks angry for this comment, but I always felt there is something not real about Marie. She comes across as kinda fake. I also find it odd that as big as her family is, her son felt so alone, he took his own life. Of course one never knows what goes on behind closed doors.

In Morman theology if you kill yourself, you go to hell, no ifs ands or buts. No forgiveness.

That is not true.

“Suicide consists in the voluntary and intentional taking of one’s own life, particularly where the person involved is accountable and has a sound mind. … Persons subject to great stresses may lose control of themselves and become mentally clouded to the point that they are no longer accountable for their acts. Such are not to be condemned for taking their own lives. It should also be remembered that judgment is the Lord’s; he knows the thoughts, intents, and abilities of men; and he in his infinite wisdom will make all things right in due course.” Bruce R. McConkie - Mormon Doctrine

If her faith helps her cope, then that is good. Each person has the right to believe as they choose, and each is allowed (or should be allowed, except on HP), to handle their grief in their own way.

We may think it is a bunch of hocus-pocus, but it is an important part of her life and good people will respect other's faiths.

Wrapped in a robe with white feathers that resembled angels' wings, she genuflected on the stage and held out her hand...." She referred to her son as "my angel." At the end of the act, her brother asked the audience to give her a big round of applause for being so brave. I guess it was really all about Marie.

It is about picking your butt up and going on one step at a time.

Part of going dealing with grief is to develop a "new Normal" cause it is not going back to the old way.
Going BACK TO WORK for anyone is a first step in the right direction to not submitting to her own depression.
It is the first thing grief counselors tell you. Return to routine as quick as you can, get therapies, rest and don't beat yourself up for having a bad day.

Maybe if more people were tolerant of others and didn't judge someone who just lost a family member the world would be a little bit better.

HEY MARIE!! WAKE UP! YOUR FAITH KILLED YOUR SON. YOU KILLED YOUR SON..
10:38 AM on 03/11/2010
Her Mormon faith may be helping her through this, but it's probably her Mormon faith that had a hand in killing her gay son. Seen it too many times.

YOu are totally right, and I have said this myself. Mormonism, aside from being a complete sham concocted by an insane con-man, is one of the worlds most homophobic religions, and, naturally, as such, is totally gay itself, just like all the republicans. It hates itself, and it's mythology is full of homoerotic stories. It is wicked clusterf*ucky, even for a numbnuts wacko religious cult, which it is.

Tolerance and non-discrimination on display. The next time someone here says the GOP or christians are hate filled intollerant trogs I'm going to point to this thread.

The true progressive is tolerant of ideas that he/she doesn't agree with or hold.

So, I guess any crazy, murderous cult is A-OK with you, just as long as it has *lots* of members and money. How did you feel about heavens gate? How about the Rajneeshies? How about the Koresh folks? Yeah, we should just tolerate crazy baby raping cultists, like the mormons and the catholics...........ooops, did I just say that?
11:25 AM on 03/11/2010
I agree. But sometimes it is hard to be tolerant of a group of people who want to deny Americans their divil rights. I think that is just plain wrong. It may very well be that that is what caused the young man's death. A friend of mine was kicked out of the Mormon faith because he came out of the closet. This non-acceptance by a religion he had loved for 40 years was devastating to him. if Chrstian religions truly followed the tenets of Jesus Christ, progressives or people like myself would find it easier to accept them.

Space Jesus can cure all... Mormons are freaks. Most christians are freaks hovering somewhere between the Taliban and the naivete of a 3 year old, but Mormons are the Charles Mansons of christianity... So bat s h i t crazy that they'd make great scientologists.

May Marie find peace and healing during this difficult time.
As time goes on Marie, given her celebrity status, will be given the opportunity to address treatment of depression and suicide prevention. We can't bring back loved ones that kill themselves, we can prevent it. She will be given an opportunity to make the world a better place. I hope her church will not get in the way.

I have heard that God does want you to go on stage and entertain after you kid kills themselves because applause is by all means the great healer. The show must go on...yeah, I think God said that.

God left the building long ago when he realized that after he created the BRAIN, people didn't use it to think for themselves because they were too busy blaming or crediting him for everything.
