The coveted domain name 'Sex.com' is about to hit the auction block. The bidding will start at a cool $1 million.

The domain name was last sold for $14 million--and it's not even the most expensive URL out there.

We've taken a look at the 11 most expensive domain names to date. Not surprisingly, most are breasts, booze, and 'bling' heavy, but there are some curveballs on the list.

Check them out in the slideshow below.

Most of the sold domain names are dot com. But there is few "not .com" domain names which break the record, for example bank.ht was sold for USD 1.4 million, inn.im for USD 1.8 million and motorcycle.se for USD 1.1 million

Most major corporations all have paid over $1 million for a series of what the domain industry calls "prodservs" domains, which are domains that generically describe the product or service the company offers. For example, Johnson & Johnson bought Baby.comm" for over $2 million almost a decade ago. Any reader can do a search to see common personal item domains, like toothpaste.comm" already bought by a company and pointing it to their website. If you find a common item that isn't being use to promote only one company, then expect that some company soon will invest cash to "own that category" and buy the domain. A domain name is an "appreciable marketing asset" that continually promotes the relevant prodservs it describes. Every company who wants to control their company's product sales online would serve themselves better by owning their generic term domains, as it shuts out their competitors from owning that online property. And, everytime their competitor uses the domain word/phrase in their advertising, they're essentially promoting the domain name in the .com extension.

Hope this makes sense. successclick.

Anyone know the details of what transpired with jesus.com? The guy who used to own it (who invites women to "bathe with Jesus," and who now has a similar site at datejesus.com) said he wasn't going to sell it for less than $10 million. I see it's now owned by the Metropolitan Community Church. Did Jesus cash in big time?

Those are precisely the type of domain name that is unsuccessful. Think of the sites you go to most often and think if any of them have general object names as their url. The only one I can think of is weather.com but that's not a sales site.

A agree with Teen Domainer, half those sales were sales of businesses not sales of just the domain names. Weather.com sold for a billion if you want to use that model

I have a common first name, so it of course is taken as a dot com, but I have a friend with a rather uncommon name and he has it as his personal dot com site. If you have a second, type in your name and see what "your" site is.
