Marcelas Owens, 11-Year-Old Whose Mother Died Without Health Insurance: 'Get The Health Care Bill Passed'

Health Care Overhaul

First Posted: 05/11/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:50 PM ET

Marcelas Owens, an 11-year-old from Seattle, headlined a press conference with Senate Democratic leadership on Thursday, telling a packed room of reporters that he wanted the president and Congress to come together and pass health insurance reform.

"I am here because of my mom," said Owens. "My mom was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2006. She missed so much work she lost her job. And when my mom lost her job, she lost her health care. And losing her health care ended up costing her her life."

He continued, "I don't want any other kids to go through the pain that our family has gone through. My grandma and I want Barack Obama and Congress and everybody to come together and to help get the health care bill passed."

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) has been telling her constituent's story for months, most notably at the White House health care summit in February. Speaking before Owens, she recalled how she met him at a rally in Washington.

"I went to that rally and, after I spoke, I turned around and there was this little boy looking right straight up at me with his big brown eyes," she said. "And he said to me, 'You can't let anybody die like my mom did.'"

Murray, along with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), said that Owens's story shows in stark terms why the country needs health insurance reform.

"When she lost her job, she lost her health insurance. Because she lost her health insurance, she lost her life," said Reid.

At least one conservative columnist wants to throw cold water on the Marcelas Owens narrative. Michelle Malkin wrote in a column that Democrats are using Owens as a "human kiddie shield." And, reprising her role in a coordinated conservative assault on the family of 12-year-old Graeme Frost during the battle over children's health insurance in 2007, Malkin questioned whether a failure of personal responsibility is not to blame for the death of Owens's mother.

"It's a heart-wrenching story, but the tale raises more questions than it answers," Malkin wrote. "Washington State offers a plethora of existing government assistance programs to laid-off and unemployed workers like Marcelas' mom. Why didn't she enroll? Second, she died nine months after she reportedly lost her health insurance. By the time she lost her coverage through her employer, she was apparently already in dire health straits. It's not clear that additional doctors' visits in the subsequent months would have prevented her death."

After the press conference, HuffPost caught up with Owens and his grandmother and asked him what it was like to address a room full of reporters.

"I wasn't nervous," he said, adding that it was his 24th media appearance. He's been in Washington all week participating in protests and meeting with members of Congress. HuffPost followed up with a question about politicians. What did Owens think about people who oppose health insurance reform?

"I don't have any bad comments," he said. "But I would like to say their opinion is their opinion and they can say what they want about me... and I'll just keep turning around and doing what I'm doing."

Why are conservatives complaining of a government run health plan since they obviously wouldn't be signing on with it anyway? I'm pretty sure people who have zero health coverage won't be too picky about the coverage they're offered as any coverage for Americans is better than none. Besides, isn't this the same party who whines that the government should stay out of everyone's lives? Yet they decry the thought of healthcare reform when it will have no effect on them personally other than the possibility of being taxed. And that is always a possibility anyway as it is. Then again if they were the proud patriots they claim to be they wouldn't hold rallies complaining about being taxed, when in fact most of them are better off under Obama's tax plan. You telling me those tea-baggers make 100k and they can't even afford overalls that buckle correctly? Good thing us liberals didn't act that way when we were taxed at the same rate under Bush, only us being taxed means we have to struggle to survive, to the GOP being taxed means choosing between a Mazarati and a Bentley....No one likes taxes, but here's a crazy thought I had the other day. If everyone does their part in some way, and gives back to this great nation that has given us all great opportunities, whether it's volunteering your time, $, or even paying your taxes......we'd be a much stronger nation than we already are.

Let's take a trip,as a single parent let's say that you are a single dad with 2 kids and a shakey job, that gives you healthcare but the pay is not enough to take care of the rent, food ex.but you have to keep because it has healthcare and one day the boss said no more healthcare, you have to buy your oun.
But one of the kids is sick, that is a pre.con.and no one will give you healthcare. What are you going to do other than try to find a new job. What about state healthcare now that is a good idea. Can you think of any other way to get healthcare right now? no I can't either.
To all fools that is republicans ,you are hurting your party and the USA.The rest of the world has healthcare but we don't and it is because of fools like you, that are only thinking of the money that you are being paid by the insurance co.to try to stop healthcare .The money is blinding you.Why not take the money and give it to doctors that give out healthcare without getting paid for it.
do something good with your life.Help some one that needs the help.

THAT MICHELLE MALKIN IS A CONSERVATIVE RIGHT WING _ITCH!....SO NOW THE POOR WOMAN 'S DEATH WAS HER OWN FAULT...WELL I WILL HAVE HER KNOW I AM EMPLOYED WITHOUT MDEICAL COVERAGE. IT IS SO EXPENSIVE FOR HEALTH COVERAGE ON MY JOB I COULDN'T AFFORD TO PARTICIPATE. I FOUND THIS JOB AFTER BEING UNEMPLOYED FOR 6 MONTHS AND IN DIRE FINANCIAL STRAIT. WAS BARELY MAKING IT BEFORE I WAS LAID OFF. SO I COULN'T AFFORD TO HAVE ABOUT 800 DOLLARS TAKEN OUT OF MY CHECK EACH MONTH AND I WAS ONLY MAKING A HOURLY WAGE FOR A JOB THAT WAS A 10 MO POSITION IN A SCHOOL. AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE MIGHT NOT HAVE SAVED HER LIFE, BUT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE, SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO DIE WITHOUT IT AND THE CHILD SHOULD NOT BE WITHOUT HIS MOTHER.

This kid lost his mom and what does he get...a typical republican response....sorry kid but it was your moms fault that she died. The healthcare debate is showing us just how heartless these politicians are.

I mean an 11 yr old kid who lost his mom...surely you have better things to say than that. Even if you do not agree with the bill as it is..reassure the kid that both parties are working so that this does not happen again..cold and callous

This is America the great....if you really think about it, we say America is great based on superficial things such as wall street, the number of billionaires and millionaires, an oversized government, and a strong military...oh and we will do anything to for profit and wealth, we sorely lack in those things that really matter such as love compassion justice and understanding...what makes this country so great? Even our leaders are cold hearted

Health, healthcare and health insurance are very different entities and the current debate is very confused about what individuals think they want and about what they are likely to get under the current OBAMA proposal. Using this child's confusion adds no light to this discussion. This child's mother's death may have resulted from multiple factors but not having "INSURANCE" was not one of them. Healthcare can be sought by all in public or charity facilities. Having an insurance card will not keep obesity from killing you, will not protect you from dreaded diseases, will not prevent fatal injuries. The plan under current consideration will not bring "health" IT WILL BRING "DEBT" and rationing of "HEALTH CARE".

Health care is already rationed in this country. Its being rationed by for profit insurance companies. And according to the Budget Office scoring, the Obama plan, no matter how bad it is right now will save money. And doing nothing will cause an increase in costs for everyone who presently have insurance. Look at the increases that are being implemented by Blue Cross across the country that has been highlighted by the news. And this in the face of record profits by the insurance industry and in the face of fighting legislation that is trying to address that issue. Have they no shame? The answer, no!
09:09 AM on 03/17/2010
Trust me no one without insurance is confuse! There already is agreat divide in this country when it comes to "healthcare" and "health insurance". Try walking into a hospital with no insurance card and see what type of health care you get. And If they wait on you see how long it takes them to do it! Try finding a doctor to even see you without health insurance, you won't, they will kindly refer you to go to the free clinic or other substandard medical facility, and thats if you live in an area where there even is one. That insurance card is the difference between prompt healthcare and substandard health care, often between life and death. I know, I worked in the health care field and saw the blaring differences in how folk with insurance were treated verses those without. Yes, Health insurance is offered but in many cases the cost is so ridiculous that many opt out and take their chances. It might be careless, but its a choice many have to make and it you haven't ever lived in that situation you know nothing about it. So lets get this right we are all afraid of increased taxes or more debt, but it was fine to put the country deep in debt for this stupid ass war? We actually have a problem with providing a healthcare plan for the citizens of this countr?. Where are our priorities? I think we lost them long ago....

First part of response When my response to the death of 11yr. old boy's loss of his mother touched your personal loss I'm more than giving emotional support for your tender loss. FOUR YEARS of waiting for government health plan would never have helped your daughter receive medical treatment she received with medicare/ medicaid. Once "government health plan" kicks in will you ever hear of medicaid or medicare? You are one mother and family who were given opportunity to fight for your daughter's life ($5 million in contribution from both services). Now what is in the planning for Americans considering "I can't wait for this bill to pass so..... You Americans.... can see what's in it for you!". (Fom tjhe words of Pelosi herself, exorcist- self- created for your best interests and mine). We kill you because we love you! Who do you think actually paid for the medical help in trying to beat the eventuality of your loss? Americans did and we'll do it again for you. Will the government's plan keep her alive to receiving the treatments she received? Again, I'm sorry for the loss of your daughter. I come from the same understanding of using medical treatments while hoping for another breakthrough in finding answers with cures. When we stop paying for politicaian's cars, gas, trips, and HEALTH INSURANCE (We Americans should want nothing less than same health insurance package they receive from our wallets). Please read further Part two of response.

That politicians would take advantage of a child in distress is sickening. I don't care what party you're from; it's wrong. The girl lost her mother; of course she's going to say she wants the bill passed. What 11-year old is capable of understanding the complexities of any debate like this? All she knows is she lost her mom and she doesn't want other people to die.

Shame on our leaders.

Circa 15,000 *Americans* including *children* *DIE* each year due to lack of access to affordable healthcare, for no other "sin" than being declared "...simply not profitable enough!" by some insurance company bean counter so an insurance company CEO can have a third Bentley roadster in the garage of the CEO's second vacation home in The Hamptons.

That status quo is what Stupak, Judd, McConnell, Boehner, Malkin, Limbaugh, and all others like them stand for, a status quo of corporate profit margins trumping human life.

The GOP and their "Bought Dawg" Dinocat allies are no more "pro-life" than an insurance company CEO who knowingly and willfully instructs his employees to deny coverage to policy holders for life saving treatment, just to see if the policy holder will pay out of pocket, just to see if the company can get away with not paying for treatments they are contractually obliged to cover.

END PART I

Over 15,000 Americans die each year due to lack of health insurance. Many more than 15,000 Americans die each year and they have health insurance. I see the problem, we need to get rid of all health insurance. Health insurance is killing us.
05:16 PM on 03/13/2010
You say that over 15,000 Americans, including children die each year due to lack of health insurance. Exactly how many Americans die each year that have health insurance? I can tell you it is a lot more than 15,000. So I guess your chances of living would increase if you only got rid of your health insurance.

My condolences to the family but it is sickening to take advantage of a child for political purposes. Especially if you decieve the child into thinking that what your selling is a solution while really it will just exaserbate the problems.

Sarah Palin's mom brought her and her brother over to Canada for health care treatment when they were young, because they couldn't get it in this country.
