Lindsey Vonn Wins World Cup Overall Title, 3rd Straight

Lindsey Vonn World Cup Overall Title

NESHA STARCEVIC   03/12/10 01:30 PM ET   AP

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany — Olympic downhill gold medalist Lindsey Vonn capped a historic season with her third straight overall World Cup title on Friday.

Vonn won the final super-G race of the season for her 33rd World Cup win, eclipsing Bode Miller as the most decorated American skier.

"This was the dream season. To break the U.S. record in World Cup wins and to get the Olympic gold in the downhill, my favorite discipline, and the overall title for the third time, for me it doesn't get much better," Vonn said. "When you work this hard and be rewarded like this at the end of the season feels so great."

Vonn became the first woman to win three straight overall titles since Petra Kronberger of Austria in 1990-92. Only three other women have that many overall titles, including Vreni Schneider of Switzerland and Janica Kostelic of Croatia.

Annemarie Moser-Proell of Austria leads with six.

"Someone just told me she had won six World Cups overall, and I think my jaw is still on the ground right now," Vonn said.

Vonn won the race on the 2,180-meter long Kandahar course in 1 minute, 19.30 seconds. Elisabeth Goergl of Austria was second in 1:19.46, and Nadia Styger of Switzerland took third.

Vonn was the last racer to go down the Kandahar hill and could have opted not to race since she knew she'd clinched the title. She had a bruised right knee after falling in the giant slalom Thursday and is still nursing a bruised shin and broken right little finger.

Vonn secured the title when rival and friend Maria Riesch of Germany dropped out of the top two. Riesch finished fourth, giving Vonn an unassailable lead of 215 points in the standings before the last race of the season, the slalom on Saturday.

"I knew before I started. I had (husband) Thomas at the start with me. I was so nervous, because I knew if Maria was second or higher I had to get into the top seven or risk letting the globe slip through my fingers," Vonn said. "I am just so glad I was able to do it. I can't tell you the relief I have that I won, that I got the overall title and the season is finally over."

Vonn also picked up World Cup titles in the downhill, the super-G and the combined events.

Her 11 wins this season is an American record. Only one skier has more, Schneider with 14 in the 1988-89 season. Moser-Proell and Anja Paerson of Sweden also posted 11 wins in one season.

Vonn's 33 career victories is tied for sixth place with Hanni Wenzel of Liechtenstein. Moser-Proell leads that list with 62.

Riesch, competing on her home slope, will focus on the slalom after missing out on the overall title.

"I am a little upset because I had really good race at the top, but I made a mistake at the bottom," Riesch said. "But I still have a chance for the slalom title tomorrow."

Vonn has spent the Christmas holidays at Riesch's home in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She speaks German and is popular in the country.

"Maria didn't make it easy for me," Vonn said. "She is such a strong competitor in all five disciplines and she didn't let off the gas the entire year. She made it a tough fight for me, but I think that is awesome.

"I love competing with Maria. We have both had a great season and she is going to be one of my toughest – if not the toughest – competitors for my entire career."

Next, Vonn looks forward to a long vacation.

"I am now going to go somewhere warm for a long time and not put my skis on after today probably until August," Vonn said. "It has been a long season and I am looking forward to some place – really anywhere – with a lounge chair and a drink with an umbrella in it."

Vonn won four of seven super-G races this season. She also won the bronze in the super-G at the Vancouver Olympics.

"I am looking forward to recuperating and recovering and not hurting my body for a few months at least," she said.

Only people who have never tried to ski with shin splints would have anything but the greatest respect for Lindsey Vonns accomplishments.

that is a wrong negative there.

Anyone who has skied with shin splints will have the greatest respect for Lindsey's accomplishment.

I'm glad the issue she told the press regarding her broken finger as a reason why she may not win another medal, did not prevent her legs from winning. Whew. Still, on a less sarcastic note, I'm happy she won and is happy.

How much money would she earn for this? What do these people earn per year, including endorsements?

I used to enjoy the Olympics a whole lot more before I realized that many top competitors, not all but many, are millionaires that go traipsing around the world to the top skiing resorts in the most exclusive and expensive places in the world.

I appreciate great athletes, I really do. But fawning over some of these people who travel this circuit just gets to me. The same holds for tennis.

My son's former girlfriend knows all the members of the Austrian Alpine Team personally (her dad is a former coach).
I have little doubt the Europeans are crying in their beer these days. Way to go Lindsey, you are beating them at their own game...no easy task for an American in any day or age. You deserve tremendous respect...you've surely earned it.

Not just Lindsey.

The Swiss smoked the Austrians as well.

Must be a season of national mourning in Austria.

It is not nation against nation in Alpine skiing.

It is everybody else in the World against the Austrians,

I've been known to post snarky comments in the past, but I detest the derivative and lame 'Who?' post (never submitted that one myself).

I just don't get the post...it's so played and tedious.

Without question, the 'Who?' comment is the lamest post on this site (and incredibly, its continually repeated...probably upwards of 2 dozen times each day).

Other derivative, lame posts include the following:

- Stay classy
- get her a sandwich
- Fail
- any acronym originating from the internet (OMG, ROTFLMAO, etc.)
- any emoticon
- rethug
- progressive
- rant

and many, many more...sorry for the 'rant'...

You are a die hard ski racing fan like myself. I have been a long time fan since Franz Klammer and the days of Stenmark. You get fanned.

Congratulations to Lindsey for her third straight Wolrd cup title which is quite a feat. Which equals Phil Mahre three overall titles for an American. However it does not surpass one of the greatest of all time Marc Girardelli who had five overall titles. Perhaps Vonn will be known as the greatest American woman skier of all time.

Franz Klammer, Hah!

Jean Claude Killy was the best skier ever.

Vonn is already the best AMERICAN skier ever.

And has much of her career ahead of her.

Racing injured once again after a crash in the GS, Vonn showed her incredible toughness and heart by winning this SG. Calling her a “drama queen” shows you know squat about the sport.

To put Vonn’s World Cup accomplishments in perspective this is her third straight overall title, third straight downhill title, second straight super G title and her first combined title. She matches Phil Mahre for the American record for overall titles, and moves past Picabo Street in US downhill titles. She matches Bode Miller for the American super G title record.

With her 33rd World Cup win, Vonn moves into a tie with Hanni Wenzel for 12th all time, sixth among women. Her tenth SG win extends her U.S. record and matches her with Michela Dorfmeister and Pirmin Zurbriggen for fourth all time, third among women.
If she stays healthy and focused, she could become one of the greatest world cup skiers, male of female, of all time. Not bad for a drama queen.
Ted “shred” Ligety also clinched the GS title this year…capping an incredible season for our team.

It would appear very few people have any idea how tough you have to be to be a Downhill racer.

let alone a successful one.
12:31 PM on 03/12/2010
To you know-nothing whiners who are judging her because she didn't sweep EVERYTHING, and could no doubt have done better yourselves ... do your mommies know you talk that way???

Just watched the race on Universal Sports, and she was spectacular. Last racer of the day, records on the line and she totally nailed her run. It's tough for some to understand that the Olympics, while an important event, are just another meet in the World Cup circuit. You love to win the gold medal, but what she has done, no one has ever done. More titles (33) than any other American, male or female, her third overall globe in a row.... it's unprecedented.

To say she's "overrated" because she didn't win every event in which she entered is, I hope, a sarcastic jab at the haters. She's the best skier in the world and she proved it.
12:08 PM on 03/12/2010
That's the problem. No one (in the US) watches alpine skiing outside of the Olympics, so when they see her fall 3/5, they automatically think she's overrated. I think she will do much better in the next Winter Olympics, now that her nerves are out of the way.

No way...I watched her in the Olympics and even though I don't know a thing about ski racing, I could tell she was way, way over-rated. I mean, she didn't even win gold medals in all the events she participated in...

she had an injured leg, she was lucky to pull it off in the dowhill, but when you are wearing comp boots over an injured leg,and its a little like someone pounding on your shin with a bat.
