Texas Education Board Approves Conservative Curriculum Changes By Far-Right

Texas Curriculum

***UPDATE*** Think Progress flags some of the more eye-opening revisions the Texas Board of Education approved for its social studies curriculum and textbooks:

- The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum, "replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin."

- The Board refused to require that "students learn that the Constitution prevents the U.S. government from promoting one religion over all others."

The Texas Freedom Network live-blogged the debate over the changes. Read more here.

AUSTIN, Texas — A far-right faction of the Texas State Board of Education succeeded Friday in injecting conservative ideals into social studies, history and economics lessons that will be taught to millions of students for the next decade.

Teachers in Texas will be required to cover the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation's Founding Fathers, but not highlight the philosophical rationale for the separation of church and state. Curriculum standards also will describe the U.S. government as a "constitutional republic," rather than "democratic," and students will be required to study the decline in value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.

"We have been about conservatism versus liberalism," said Democrat Mavis Knight of Dallas, explaining her vote against the standards. "We have manipulated strands to insert what we want it to be in the document, regardless as to whether or not it's appropriate."

Following three days of impassioned and acrimonious debate, the board gave preliminary approval to the new standards with a 10-5 party line vote. A final vote is expected in May, after a public comment period that could produce additional amendments and arguments.

Decisions by the board – made up of lawyers, a dentist and a weekly newspaper publisher among others – can affect textbook content nationwide because Texas is one of publishers' biggest clients.

Ultraconservatives wielded their power over hundreds of subjects this week, introducing and rejecting amendments on everything from the civil rights movement to global politics. Hostilities flared and prompted a walkout Thursday by one of the board's most prominent Democrats, Mary Helen Berlanga of Corpus Christi, who accused her colleagues of "whitewashing" curriculum standards.

By late Thursday night, three other Democrats seemed to sense their futility and left, leaving Republicans to easily push through amendments heralding "American exceptionalism" and the U.S. free enterprise system, suggesting it thrives best absent excessive government intervention.

"Some board members themselves acknowledged this morning that the process for revising curriculum standards in Texas is seriously broken, with politics and personal agendas dominating just about every decision," said Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network, which advocates for religious freedom.

Republican Terri Leo, a member of the powerful Christian conservative voting bloc, called the standards "world class" and "exceptional."

Board members argued about the classification of historic periods (still B.C. and A.D., rather than B.C.E. and C.E.); whether students should be required to explain the origins of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its impact on global politics (they will); and whether former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir should be required learning (she will).

In addition to learning the Bill of Rights, the board specified a reference to the Second Amendment right to bear arms in a section about citizenship in a U.S. government class.

Conservatives beat back multiple attempts to include hip-hop as an example of a significant cultural movement.

Numerous attempts to add the names or references to important Hispanics throughout history also were denied, inducing one amendment that would specify that Tejanos died at the Alamo alongside Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Another amendment deleted a requirement that sociology students "explain how institutional racism is evident in American society."

Democrats did score a victory by deleting a portion of an amendment by Republican Don McLeroy suggesting that the civil rights movement led to "unrealistic expectations for equal outcomes."

Fort Worth Republican Pat Hardy, a longtime teacher, voted for the new standards, but said she wished the board could work with a more cooperative spirit.

"What we've done is we've taken a document that by nature is too long to begin with and then we've lengthened it some more," Hardy said, shortly after the vote. "Those long lists of names that we've put in there ... it's just too long.

"I just think we failed to keep that in mind, it's hard for teachers to get through it all."

This sickens me. Obviously education has failed for years if this is what these so-called adults believe and understand. Sickening. Sickening.

Does this surprise anyone? Patricia Hardy obviously didn't know who Oscar Romero was and so his contribution to the fight against oppresion shouldn't be taught? Forget what the experts suggest, she simply didn't think he was important enough, so no student in America will learn about him in school. I can just read her mind..... 'shoot I don't believe it, so it ain't gonna get learned'.

As a native "left" Texan, I can already see the writing on the wall. Just wait and see what happens when Rick Perry runs for (and will most probably win) the Presidency. Hold on to your hats folks, it will only get worse from here. Don't believe me? Remember the last Texas President? The dumbing down of America continues.

If they were just brainwashing their own kids, that's one thing. The problem is that Texas effectively sets the standards for the rest of the country. Since they have a centralized system for purchasing the textbooks, they're the single biggest customer; so most of the publishers don't dare do anything to annoy Texas politicians.

Boycott all and any publishing companies that dare publish a "textbook" meeting these "standards"

They must be putting something in the water in Texas.

Fiddling around with history in textbooks is nothing new, though.

I always enjoyed history, even as a kid. Somehow, I managed to get through 12 years of public school without reading one, single word about the Mexican War (1846-1848).

They DID mention Pres. James K. Polk, and the fact that God told him to expand the borders of the US to the Pacific Ocean (Manifest Destiny). They neglected to mention that we declared war on Mexico so we could steel half of their country from them.

Back in the '70s, the US was still always the 'good guy', and never the agressor.

Another job well done, congratulations on ensuring that your children have no future. Way to go idjits!

Here's the thing: textbooks are outdated technology, it really does not matter what they put in them, kids are going to get everything they need form the internet. My guess is California, when they take on this issue in 2014, will put every kid on an ipad or a kindle. The clock can't be stopped or even slowed down by these idiots.

Revisit the gold standard? Really? They gotta be kidding.

I can't help but wonder - by following the strict conservative education system in Texas, how will all these dim-wits survive if they leave Texas for their higher, more informed educational systems? It appears all Texas has to do is have just ONE 'textbook' from which to 'learn' and they can probably get all they need from the Giddeons.

Texas is finally removing all the liberal bias that has crept into its textbooks over the last 40 years and preventing anymore from getting in.

You have fallen prey to the HuffPo liberal bias reporting. TJ was removed from the section on speration of church and state, not the whole textbook. But you wouldn't get that from reading the spin written here.

Do you want to do something about this other than post your opinion?
Contact the Texas SBOE and let them know what you think.
Email address, fax number, mailing address and telephone number are all right here.

are they going to execute the teachers who do not teach this nonsense? If so there will be nobody LEFT literally to actually TEACH our children!
10:23 AM on 03/17/2010
No executions, but they can fire people. I intend to contact the BOE and make my opinion known.

As a born and raised citizen of Texas, the direction the BOE is going makes me want to cry. It is ok to add information to the curriculum, but it is not ok to pick and choose according to a subversive agenda. The proposed changes listed in this article look like they are geared towards tearing down civil rights, government authority, and common sense.

Adding historical figures that happen to be religious in nature may be controversial, but I am not so concerned with their addition as I am the fact that it is obvious that they are being used to replace what the religious right seem to see as their secular counterparts.

The US is magnificent in many ways, and it is ok to teach our children that. We must also however teach them that we are not perfect. It is not our right or responsibility to rule the world. Our way of running things is not the only way.

As for the label of "Constitutional Republic" instead of "Democracy," I cannot argue with that one because it is true. However, just because ONE item is rational and makes sense, it does not make the rest of it ok. This list of changes overall is scary.
