Dan Wallrath: CNN Hero Builds Mortgage-Free Homes For Veterans

Sgt Alexander Reyes returned from his tour of duty in Iraq with severe injuries to his legs, caused by a blast in Baghdad. Reyes served his country admirably, and his wounds require consistent attention. Faced with financial hardship, him and his wife were going to have trouble paying for a home.

That's when custom home-builder and CNN Hero Dan Wallrath came into the picture. In the home-building business for 30 years, Wallrath was greatly affected by meeting wounded soldiers returning from war. He decided to build homes for these soldiers and let them have them mortgage-free.

Wallrath is featured as part of CNN's "Heroes" series. A group of CNN Heroes are selected each year to be honored in an annual ceremony in November, with one CNN Hero chosen to receive a large sum of money to continue his/her work. Last year's winner was Efren Peñaflorida.
