Turkey is like this country. It is sliding from a secular to a religiously ran country.

Why should we care? If the Turkish government wants the go backward let them...at some point the Turkish people have to decide. Most apparently like the Islamists so why is this a surprise?

This is so sad - not so long ago, there had been so much change for women in Turkey. The ladies were becoming self-confident and happy. Why don't they want their women to be happy?

As for "insulting Turkishness," gimme a break! That's so two-thousand years ago to be so thin-skinned. Man up!

Prime example of misogyny. Women are not to have ownership of their bodies. This one is rather creative though.

The funny thing is that abortion is legal in Turkey.

Another step toward the inevitable islamic state.....and the complete subjugation of women & their bodies.

so Huffpo gives us dumb articles like this and won't do an article on the referendum not to pay back bad banks loans in Iceland, where the people stood up as a body and said NO !

Your talking about a country where they Televise the mass genital mutilation of dozens of boys at a time as a celebration. (Don't believe me? Google "Sunnet") Of course they are sexual weirdo's so I am not at all surprised they are taking this action.

ps. Turkish women, I suggest you take your husband with you then claim you did it the old fashioned way. What are they going to do, walk into the doctors office with you? Wait, no, don't answer that.......

"mass genital mutilation" I suspect this is post 9/11 lingo for circumcision.

For most of us in the world not brainwashed by religion or a profit-driven medical establishment in the U.S., it was "mutilation" long before 11 September 2001.

Given the mindset of the Turkish government, it sounds like it wouldn't hurt to expand that gene pool a bit.

And yet Turkey has been trying to join the EU for decades now, as a "secular" country. Is it any wonder the resistance continues?
09:47 AM on 03/16/2010
I kinda doubt than anyone wants to join the EU at this point. :)

Well, we haven't started stoning women or burying girls alive for wearing their skirts too short yet. Domestic abuse is a horrid problem in the US - but we still manage to keep the tide of religious fundamentalism from taking over our government.

Your post is so empty and desperate that you cannot even cite one example of how the U.S. not "doing all that much better".

Even if the situation for women is not as progressive as say Sweden, any thoughtful liberal can see the U.S. in marginally behind the E.U. not miles behind like many Islamic nations.

only small minded fanatics constantly have to ban everything . are they ever actually FOR anything except murder and war and oppression?
07:05 AM on 03/16/2010
I read somewhere that the minister of health also defined homosexuality as a mental or genetic affliction. Sounds like they are electing their politicians from the same gene pool as we are.

How is this going to work?

If a man and wife take a trip out of Turkey and she shows up pregnant some months later, what is the government going to do, require DNA tests after the baby is born?

If the man's DNA doesn't match, what are they going to charge her with? Adultery? Artificial insemination? Send a new mother to jail?

I was going to ask "can they get any more stupid" then realized they certainly can.

What really confuses em is women are 50% of the people on earth, yet they let men treat them like this. why don't they make it plane to their menfolk this is unacceptable?

After listening to all the stupid crap from the various religious "leaders," I am at the point where I think we should outlaw religion and blast all the people that won't convert to non-religion to Mars to colonize it. If they survive, they can thank their "god" whatever that is.

Based on the photo provided, I can see why she wouldn't able to find a donor.
I've seen so many of such beauties in Berlin and Vienna that I am starting to leaning towards a burqa permission... nay, requirement.

Well, old buddy, this little treasure manages to bundle cultural insensitivity with misogyny, xen.ophobia, rac.ism and a complete lack of empathy, resulting in something you'd hear in a schoolyard. A poor schoolyard. Good for you.
