Tea Party March 16 Protest Turnout: Democrats MOCK Smaller-Than-Expected Crowd

Despite the Tea Party movement's high hopes for Tuesday's Capitol Hill rally to kill health care reform -- an event that featured appearances by numerous GOP lawmakers -- it appears the crowd was not as large as expected.

Tea Party organizers told CNN that somewhere between 1,000 and 3,000 people gathered today in Washington D.C.

But the Democratic National Committee estimates placed the number of attendees at a mere 300, an amount that they later mocked and used as evidence that "the air is out of the tea party balloon," as DNC spokeswoman Brandi Hoffine said, according to the Hill.

"Today's dismal showing on Capitol Hill coupled with the turnout we're seeing at health reform rallies across the country where supporters are outnumbering opponents by three to one and four to one clearly demonstrates that the momentum is squarely on the side of those who support reform," Hoffine continued.

"I've been to birthday parties that drew more people," the communications director for the Democratic National Committee, Brad Woodhouse, told Politico in an email.

But Rob Jordan, vice president of federal and state campaigns at FreedomWorks -- one of the organizers of Tuesday's events -- fired back:

"For those who are dismissing, I would say the only date that matters is Nov. 2nd," Jordan said, "you can count on people showing up for that day."

Tea Party leaders also cited the last-minute organizing of Tuesday's even as a reason for the smaller-than-expected turnout.

"I'd be elated with 500, a thousand people, 1,500," a Tea Party organizer told The Atlantic's Chris Good. "With such short notice, it's hard to get a lot of people."

Counting crowds is hard. Teaparty folks say 1000-3000, DNC says 300.

Here is some data - a photo that shows a little more than one guy with a sign...

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/03/20/tea-party-activists-make-stand-health-care-vote/

I counted ~15 people in the foreground and it looks at least 20 deep. That gives ~300 (the DNC number). Taking perspective into account (16 in the foreground, about 8 times that in the extreme background) there are likely 5 - 8 times the 300, giving 1500 - 2400 in this photo alone. The photo does not capture the whole crowd - it is still packed on the left side.

It looks to me like the DNC can't count. These are the same people who say this HCR bill will be deficit neutral and reduce premium costs.

tea pots remind me of the japanese soldiers who kept fighting after WWII ended. At least those guys had an excuse. They didn't know the war was over. The teapots are the remnants of the confederate army who don't know the civil war ended with Obama's election.

The DNC has hit a new low, and boy is that saying something. Now they're making fun of people at a protest? They are truly reaching if that's what they're stooping too. It's good news though; it means they're in serious trouble and they know it. They realize people can see through this abomination of a health care bill.

For those of us who watch Fox, the DNC was right on in their catching a few laughs at the lack of numbers at the vaunted Tea Party protest. The whole Tea Party movemet seems to have been timed to activate those in rural America who had nothing to do during the long winter months. Well, it's planting season and the viability and need for Health Care Reform is here. Get it done now
08:27 AM on 03/18/2010
Get it done now, huh? Pelosi herself said we should pass the health care reform "so the American people can see what's in it". Why are you supporting something when you don't even know what it is?

the teapots set the bar pretty low in their despicable treatment of the man with parkinson's. i'll bet that each and every person who cursed and vilified that unfortunate gentlemen profess to be christians.
To those people, I propose this question-what would Jesus do?

Much ado about nothing. The tea baggers are everywhere in the news but hard to find on the street without the careful attention of FOX and their enablers to point them out.

Although your assessment is spot on there is nothing you or I can do get republicans to open their eyes and see that their behavior is NOT helping neither the country nor their cause (which they claim is keeping the country strong). Unlike the Dutch boy who stuck his finger in the dike to stop the water from harming the town, the republicans stick their finger in the dike to pull at the rocks to widen the hole and destroy the town. They do this in the name of helping the town.

People with this logic cannot be helped, because they don't want to change. Change to them means letting others have the opportunity to lead and provide input to how we all face tomorrow. republicans are driven by the single thought of, "we lead or we destroy, but nobody gets a say about anything but us."

How can you help anyone with this mentality?

Ollie North would call them "sunshine patriots", not that he really knows what a patriot is.

Q: how can you tell when a Tea Party rally is imminent?
A: the grocery stores run out of tinfoil.
