Bill Brady Votes NO On Child Helmet Safety Bill

Bill Brady, Republican candidate for Illinois governor, cast one of 32 "no" votes against a child helmet bill.

The bill, which would have required all children under the age of 18 to wear helmets while on motorcycles, failed in the Senate Thursday, receiving only 19 votes.

Bill Brady could not immediately be reached for comment on his vote, but political blog The Capitol Fax reports the sentiments of one "no" voter, Sen. Gary Forby (D-Benton.) Forby said "I don't want anybody in this audience telling me how to raise my kids."

The full bill, SB2535, reads:

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to require every operator and passenger under the age of 18 on a motorcycle, motor driven cycle, or motorized pedalcycle to wear a helmet that meets federal safety standards and is properly fastened under the person's chin with a chin strap. Effective January 1, 2011.

Brady has already made some questionable moves in the legislature since he became the gubernatorial nominee, perhaps most memorably his sponsorship of a bill allowing mass gas-chamber euthanasia of pets.
