The Funniest Newspaper Corrections Ever: Retracting The Ridiculous (PICTURES)

First Posted: 7/28/10   Updated: 5/25/11

We understand fudging a couple details every now and then. Misprinting a statistic, perhaps? It's bound to happen at some point and a newspaper should dutifully take responsibility. But these screw-ups take newspaper corrections to a whole new level. It's amazing how many people are wrongfully called prostitutes. Hey editors, not everybody in the news is trying to turn tricks!

i can't believe none of you caught the Mark Steyn reference. Steyn is this major RW blowhard who ran afoul of the Canadian Human Rights Laws concerning hate speech or something. This is probably a reference to something the paper wrote about him that he didn't like and their first apology.... well I suppose he whined about it so.... they are retracting it and apologizing AGAIN. Just to see if they can make him stomp his feet so they can do it AGAIN.

Its a smartypants retraction. Once again don't make anyone mad who buys ink by the barrel.

Most of these are bored editors just trying to get attention...

The funniest thing about this article is the number of people who have their noses out of joint about the Chinese Seafood Restaurant correction. This is what makes it funny or ridiculous: If you read and understood that particular dialect of Chinese, you would have realized that it was backwards or upside down and no correction would have been really necessary. If you can't read Chinese, there would have been no correction possible that would have made you understand any better than the original. No slam on Chinese, it could have been any language that uses unfamiliar characters to the dominant audience.

What's funny about correction 4-12 (China Seafood Restaurant) is that the correction is still wrong. The original error was that the Chinese characters were printed upside down. The characters say "China Seafood Restaurant". The correction says, "Restaurant Seafood China". This would have been accepted 75 years ago, but it is backwards. Chinese may sometimes be written top to bottom, left to right, but the way that it is shown is incorrect.

I love corrections like this, but honestly, these are old already! Regret the Error is the best source for these http://www.regrettheerror.com/

I once lived in Arlington, WA., and I'd be surprised if they ever got it right. You could drop that "west coast" town right in the middle of South Carolina without the locals realizing that anything was different.

Please leave comedy to the pros.

Some of these were funny but the lead one about the chinese restaurant is just a tad racist. If you speak the dialect written it would not be funny.

Most of them were laugh-out-loud funny, but slapping the label "porn star" on the photo of some woman should not be adequately taken back with a "correction." That was inexcusable- entirely.

Hey! Don't share funny newspaper corrections! You'll put Jay Leno out of a job!

Maybe Leno should be out of a job. I watched him do "Headlines" on Monday night, and half of them would have been funnier if read without comment. Does Jay think we won't get the joke?

He probably had to have them explained the first time around, so he figures he's helping.

The Chinese lettering correction reminds me of an incident at my newspaper a decade ago. A migrant farmworker's child needed a bone marrow transplant, so our paper brilliantly decided to print an article in Spanish to reach the Hispanic migrant community with the news so a donor from that community might be found - as if dirt-poor migrant farmworkers actively seek out an all-English newspaper in the forlorn hope that an article entirely in Spanish would appear. I had to write the headline and jump lines in Spanish. Luckily, there was a co-worker fluent in Spanish who helped me out.

I think the kid eventually found a donor. But it wasn't from our laughable effort.
