AARP, AMA Announce Support For Health Care Bill: Largest Doctors And Retiree Groups Backing Legislation

Healthcare Reform

CARLA K. JOHNSON   03/19/10 05:37 PM ET   AP

CHICAGO — The nation's largest association of doctors and the AARP senior citizens' lobby are endorsing President Barack Obama's revised health overhaul legislation.

James Rohack, president of the American Medical Association, said Friday that the pending bill isn't perfect, but it's the next step toward real reform of the nation's health care system.

"This is certainly not the bill we would have written, but we cannot let the perfect be the enemy of the good," Rohack said.

The board of the Chicago-based group reached a consensus and voted unanimously Thursday night after a review of the House reconciliation bill.

The AMA has supported earlier versions of the bill. One of its top priorities is permanently ending scheduled cuts in doctors' Medicare reimbursements. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday she would try pushing such a bill through Congress soon.

"We will hold Congress' feet to the fire on getting that done before this Congress adjourns," Rohack said Friday in a telephone conference with reporters.

The bill "goes a long way" toward assuring access to primary care for patients on Medicaid, the federal-state health program for the poor and disabled, Rohack said. The legislation gives primary care doctors a pay raise for Medicaid patients, increasing payments to the level of Medicare, as it expands Medicaid coverage to more patients in 2013 and 2014.

The bill would provide federal funding to states to cover that increase in Medicaid costs.

AARP has steadily supported health overhaul efforts. The organization's CEO A. Barry Rand sent a letter Friday to members of the House of Representatives, urging them to vote yes.

In a statement Friday, AARP said the legislation "will improve health care for older Americans and their families." The bill gradually closes the "doughnut hole" coverage gap in the Medicare prescription drug benefit and limits insurance companies' ability to charge higher premiums based solely on age, AARP said.

Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world.

Who IS backing the Republicans on this? I can not see where they are getting much visible support.A bunch of racist Tea Baggers and big Insurance and Fox News, but so many major groups have come out for it.

The TeaPartiers and Fox are a toxic combination. I couldn't help but laughing today at the puny size of crowd that they managed to muster against Health Care Reform. Neil Cavuto kept talking about a traffic jam that was keeping the buses loaded with protesters from Pennsylvania Ave. That was keeping the numbers down. Yeah sure. You could get that many at a high school basketball game. The crowd shots are from waist level so you can't see how few there really are. After Beck and Fox exhorting from their knees a turnout today, the power of fake news is apparently wearing thin.

All I can say is ... spring day, great weather, Washington DC, and this crowd is the best they can manage? The tide of opposition is receding. See ya.

The large crowd they referred to may have been the antiwar protest Cindy Sheehan was having.

AARP has been behind health care reform since the beginning. It wants the donut hole closed in seniors' pharmaceuticals coverage.

Mine orthopedist wants it. My general practitioner stopped taking insurance years ago, hates the insurance companies THAT much.

Guess it depends on whether your doctor(s) view you as a patient/friend or a revenue opportunity.

This Medical Day

is Doom’s Day, according
to Glenn Beck & others, the
end of Life as they know it,
an insult to God & Man. To
nuns who work in hospitals,
it brings a new medical era
of closeness to the living &
dying, offering even more
help & hope to the needful,
despite ideologues’ raving.
Here, the nuns say, take our
hands, we offer you help,
not cascading hysteria.

To believe these headlines is a joke, all kick backs on our money. These misinformed are being lead to believe in our countries biggest mistake. I feel that the ones who endorse this say, "Look at all the people who do not have insurance" . . . a incorrect, any person can walk into to a hospital and receive the best care in the world. The best health care will be non-existent in a few years. AND, I mean AND we the people who work are you know whats off pay will higher taxes and receive lesser health care because of this. The unfortunate I hear, get a job and you have health care. You don't want to dig a ditch, then too bad. US small business owners who provide JOBS and INSURANCE are also getting bent over. USSA . . United States of Socialist America!

History looks like this
05:51 AM on 03/20/2010
Milwaukee is a big city that had a Socialist mayor. The Socialist cleaned up what was widely regarded as a particularly corrupt city. Water and sanitation were improved. Public parks were supported. The schools were held to high standards, and one of the teachers later became Israeli Prime Minister. The mayor made groceries available at costs so that Milwaukee continues to have the best food buys and national chains rarely succeed here. Neighborhood health clinics were opened. Mayor Daniel Hoan was elected the leader of the national association of mayors. The Socialists were working people and it is surprising how modestly these politicians lived.

Republicans and Democrats early on united to run "reform" candidates against the Socialists.

Ditch digger employers offer health care?

Anti heathcare philosophy:
Low taxes for the employer. Encourage the employer to hire off shore to avoid paying ....benefits.
The working poor can get their care at free health clinics. Free health clinics rely on donations from the rich.
The rich want tax breaks not in order to give to non profits but to buy vacation homes and new cars.. The rich employer cheap labor - ditch digger who is not offered benefits to keep cost down.

Its the American Way!

I am reading alot of your posts about AARP, are any of you members? I am, my Mom is. AARP helped us figure out the Medicare partD and make the choice that was best for my Mom. We chose a Medicare advantage program, Humana for Mom also. We didn't buy anything through AARP. They just had all the information in one place and we could sort it out there. Moms medicare advantage costs her $95 per month, that includes prescription drug coverage, on her Social Security and her little bit of pension she can still have her own house and lives pretty good, at least she's a happy little widow and doesn't have to be afraid.
I get my medicare next January, I will be checking out the AARP site, the medicare site and making my choices. I won't be buying anything from AARP, I will be getting my insurance either a traditional medicare, or if I choose, a Medicare Advantage policy. But I'm very very happy to have AARP for all the good information, not only insurance, that they provide to senior citizens.

They're going to say:

"AARP Services oversees and manages the relationships with the service providers of AARP-endorsed products and services. These companies often offer specially-designed services and price-points for
the members of AARP. They develop unique offers, expand into under-served markets, and create marketing messages that educate consumers. AARP receives royalty income from these providers that
is crucial to supporting the short- and long-term goals of the Association. " NOTE THIS LAST SENTENCE. They receive royalty income from all of the insurance companies they endorse. You realize the AMA endorsement was secured by Democratic leadership by offering SGR repeal later this year? The cost of the SGR repeal will turn the current 138 billion dollar decade deficit reduction into an increased deficit of 59 billion dollars according to the CBO today.

11:43 PM on 03/19/2010
This report of the SGR deal is a HOAX. Even Politico has pulled down the story, while admitting they go the false information from a Republican source. But , I'll bet you already knew that.
05:27 PM on 03/20/2010
Quit lying and spreading your blatant pre- fabricated rhetoric. This is another hoax perpetrated and repeated over and over and over and over and over and over so much so that soon the RepubNOcans start believing it themselves.

This particular instance was another perpetrated by one of John Boehner's bootlicking lackeys spreading some smoke and mirrors to try and distract what is really on their agenda, trying to derail the health care reform bill. It's going to past no matter what you RepubNOcans do so get ready to be totally discredited of any shred of your integrity that the RepubNOcan party had left, which was minimal at best already.

Thank you, AMA and AARP, for seeing the greater good and acknowledging this important first step for Health Insurance reform. The GOP (Greedy, Obnoxious Profiteers) are falling all over themselves trying any dastard tactic they can think of. But Change - as hard as it is and as important that those of us who voted for it stay involved - has come to America and it's not backing down.
