Hannity Freedom Concerts A 'Scam,' Blogger Says

Hannity

First Posted: 5/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Conservative blogger Debbie Schlussel has accused Sean Hannity's Freedom Alliance charity of unethical fundraising practices and use of money. Schlussel points out how less than four percent of Freedom Alliance's earnings in 2006 went to the nonprofit's listed causes -- college funding for the children of fallen soldiers and care for wounded veterans.

Media Matters For America points out the accuracy of Schlussel's numbers analysis, but withholds judgment on the validity of her claims, as Freedom Alliance does not openly state on its Web site the percentage of raised funds that will go to their specific programs. Nevertheless, Freedom Alliance may be hurt by Schlussel's accusations that tens of thousands of dollars were spent on private planes for Hannity's family and friends.

From DebbieSchlussel.com:

In fact, less than 20%-and in two recent years, less than 7% and 4%, respectively-of the money raised by Freedom Alliance went to these causes, while millions of dollars went to expenses, including consultants and apparently to ferret the Hannity posse of family and friends in high style. And, despite Hannity's statements to the contrary on his nationally syndicated radio show, few of the children of fallen soldiers got more than $1,000-$2,000, with apparently none getting more than $6,000, while Freedom Alliance appears to have spent tens of thousands of dollars for private planes. Moreover, despite written assurances to donors that all money raised would go directly to scholarships for kids of the fallen heroes and not to expenses, has begun charging expenses of nearly $500,000 to give out just over $800,000 in scholarships.

Credit goes to Daily Kos, who broke this story back in 2007.

From Daily Kos (08/06/2007):

So if we were to assume that the average ticket price was $50 (we'll err on the conservative side) then the organizers of this event are skimming $37 a person off the top, not including other paraphenelia. Of course there may be some expenses involved but how much is each person being paid? It also means that 92% of all moneys being paid by concert goers is NOT going to the families of soldiers. Hannity claims that "100% of the profits" go to the families. Again, note the use of the word "profits." By the time Hannity and the Freedom Alliance have taken out money for "expenses" profits are few and far between.

This link provides the confusion of the Freedom Concerts and Freedom Alliance as well as Hannity’s on air voice.

The net proceeds and amounts raised are what this is all about.
Freedom Concerts homepage states that it has raised $10 million dollars for the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund and what Freedom Alliance awards to scholarship recipients is just part of the story. The real story regarding Hannity is why doesn’t he state the ACTUAL amount the concerts donate to the Scholarship Fund. If the ACTUAL amount of dollars donated by the concerts doesn’t match the Scholarship amounts awarded by Freedom Alliance then that’s a problem Hannity should be aware of after all these years. Hannity is not the great American if he doesn’t question this and continues to mislead his audience to donate to this Scholarship. The time has come again to question Sean Hannity as a GREAT AMERICAN and/or schemer.

A denial doesn't mean the charges have been "Debunked". It merely means they have been denied. Let's see what happens when the funds are audited. A charity should be judged on the amount and percentage of funds that end up with the beneficiaries, not the total amount raised. Ollie North doesn't have the best reputation for truthfulness. After all his conviction was overturned on what the Right likes to refer to as a "Technicality".

This is not news. People start their "foundations" in order to hide behind them. Taking millions to support their personal needs and a must have, a private plane. Foundations are blood money and shame on you Hannity and the rest of you. You come first then whatever is left for the needy.

Unfortunately, your generalization is fairly accurate. As someone who works for a non-profit, I can assure you that the people at the top are VERY well paid. My tax guy actually told me that non-profit executives typically make much more than their private counterparts.

Of course he is not intelligent, he doesn't agree with what you believe. The only thing you need to do is look at the 990. Its public record and these allegations from a liberal bogger who says a "guy" said that another "guy" said something, can only make news on the Huffington Post and liberal cable TV programs (most likely this coincides with the many reasons attributed to their abyssmal ratings compared to FoxNews. And what qualifications do you need to be on the radio on and TV? He is a radio host who does not have a college degree, yet he has his own radio and television program, both of which exceed in the ratings against comparable shows with opposing points of view. To me that is a success regardless of their point of view, but to you, you have to see what they beleive in first before you decide he is not qualified. Typical "I believe in the free market unless you make alot of money (except Al Gore, george Soros, etc) liberal rhetoric that everyone but liberals can see is blatant and sad hypocrisy.

Debbie Schlussel is promising to reveal more about the Freedom Alliance. It's hard to imagine that Oliver North would be mixed up in anything shady. His record is semi-spotless. Hannity is just the talking sock puppet that is trotted for show.
