Tiger Woods gave two interviews that aired Sunday evening, the first time he has answered questions since his post-Thanksgiving car accident. According to ESPN, Woods' representatives did not restrict the network's questions, but the interview was limited to just five minutes. Another interview aired simultaneously on the Golf Channel.

Woods told ESPN that the past four months have been difficult. "I have had a lot of low points. Just when I didn't think it could get any lower, it got lower," he said. He added that he is "little nervous" about the reception he will get at the Masters, where he is scheduled to return to golf in April.

When asked how many affairs he had, Woods did not answer directly. "Well, just one is enough. And obviously that wasn't the case, and I've made my mistakes. And as I've said, I've hurt so many people, and so many people I have to make an amends to."

Woods told ESPN that telling his wife and mother about his transgressions has "been brutal. They've both been very tough. Because I hurt them the most. Those are the two people in my life who I'm closest to and to say the things that I've done, truthfully to them, is ... honestly ... was ... very painful."

Asked to describe his wife's reaction, Woods said she "was hurt, she was hurt. Very hurt. Shocked."

ESPN's Tom Rinaldi also asked Woods why he married Elin Nordegren (PHOTOS). "Why? 'Cause I loved her. I loved Elin with everything I have. And that's something that makes me feel even worse. That I did this to someone I loved that much," Woods said.

In his interview with the Golf Channel, Woods denied that many people close to him knew of his affairs as they were happening: "I'm sure if more people would have known -- in my inner circle -- they would have stopped it. But I kept it all to myself."

Woods said that his father, if he were still alive, would "be very disappointed in me. We'd have numerous long talks. And that's one of the things I miss. I miss his guidance." When asked to guess what his father would say to him, Woods replied, "I can't say it on air."

Full transcript:

Rinaldi: What's the difference between the man who left Augusta national a year ago and the one who is about to return?

Woods: A lot has transpired in my life. A lot of ugly things have happened. Things that.....I've done some pretty bad things in my life. And uh, all came to a head. But now, after treatment, going for inpatient treatment for 45 days and more outpatient treatment, I'm getting back to my old roots.

Rinaldi: For a lot of people, the spark of those bad things is Nov. 27. Early that day, what happened?

Woods: Well, it's all in the police report. Beyond that, everything's between Elin and myself and that's private.

Rinaldi: Why did you lose control of the car?

Woods: As I said ... that's between Elin and myself.

Rinaldi: If it's a private matter, why issue a public apology?

Woods: Well, I owe a lot of people an apology. I hurt a lot of people. Not just my wife. My friends, my colleagues, the public, kids who looked up to me. There were a lot of people that thought I was a different person and my actions were not according to that. That's why I had to apologize. I was so sorry for what I had done.

Rinaldi: You've said you've made transgressions. How would you, in your own words, describe the depth of your infidelity?

Woods: Well, just one is, is enough. And obviously that wasn't the case, and I've made my mistakes. And as I've said, I've hurt so many people, and so many people I have to make an amends to, and that's living a life of amends.

Rinaldi: You said you were in treatment. The simple question is, for what?

Woods: That's a private matter as well. But I can tell you what, it was tough, it was really tough to look at yourself in a light that you never want to look at yourself, that's pretty brutal.

Rinaldi: What'd you see?

Woods: I saw a person that I never thought I would ever become.

Rinaldi: Who was that?

Woods: Well, I had gotten away from my core values as I said earlier. I'd gotten away from my Buddhism. And I quit meditating. I quit doing all the things that my mom and dad had taught me. And as I said earlier in my statement, I felt entitled, and that is not how I was raised.

Rinaldi: Why not seek treatment before all of this came out?

Woods: Well, I didn't know I was that bad. I didn't know that I was that bad.

Rinaldi: How did you learn that? How did you learn it?

Woods: Stripping away denial, rationalization. You strip all that away and you find the truth.

Rinaldi: How do you reconcile your behavior with your view of marriage?

Woods: That's living a life of amends and that's just working at it each and every day.

Rinaldi: Given all that's happened, what's your measure of success at Augusta?

Woods: Well, playing is one thing. I'm excited to get back and play. I'm excited to get to see the guys again. I really miss a lot of my friends out there. I miss competing. But still, I still have a lot more treatment to do, and just because I'm playing, doesn't mean I'm gonna stop going to treatment.

Rinaldi: What reception are you expecting from fans?

Woods: I don't know. I don't know. I'm a little nervous about that to be honest with you.

Rinaldi: How much do you care?

Woods: It would be nice to hear a couple claps here and there. But also hope they clap for birdies, too.

Rinaldi: Eleven months ago, here at Isleworth, I asked you, 'How well does the world know you?' What's your answer to that now?

Woods: A lot better now. I was living a life of a lie. I really was. And I was doing a lot of things, like I said, that hurt a lot of people. And stripping away denial and rationalization you start coming to the truth of who you really are and that can be very ugly. But then again, when you face it and you start conquering it and you start living up to it. The strength that I feel now, I've never felt that type of strength.

Rinaldi: In the last four months, Tiger, what's been the low point?

Woods: I've had a lot of low points. Just when I didn't think it could get any lower, it got lower.

Rinaldi: An example?

Woods: When I was in treatment, out of treatment, before I went in, there were so many different low points. People I had to talk and face like my wife, like my mom.

Rinaldi: What was that moment like, either one?

Woods: They both have been brutal. They've both been very tough. Because I hurt them the most. Those are the two people in my life who I'm closest to and to say the things that I've done, truthfully to them, is ... honestly ... was ... very painful.

Rinaldi: What was your wife's reaction when you sat down and had that first conversation?
Woods: She was hurt, she was hurt. Very hurt. Shocked. Angry. And, you know, she had every right to be and I'm as disappointed as everyone else in my own behavior because I can't believe I actually did that to the people I loved.

Rinaldi: I ask this question respectfully, but of course at a distance from your family life. When you look at it now, why did you get married?

Woods: Why? Because I loved her. I loved Elin with everything I have. And that's something that makes me feel even worse, that I did this to someone I loved that much.

Rinaldi: How do you reconcile what you've done with that love?

Woods: We work at it.

Take a close look at Tiger in these interviews. He is puffy and looks to have gained 10 to 20 pounds. Of course he could win the Masters because he is so much better than the competition. That said, don't be surprised if he misses the cut.

This is the first time we've seen the "real" Tiger in more than a decade. No doubt he was carefully prepped for this interview by his managers and advisors, but his real voice did come through. He seemed palpably relieved to finally talk about his personal situation.

It would be a miracle if Elin stuck with him. But Tiger has been shaken to the core, forced to look at himself, and reject the abomination he saw. I strongly support his return to a normal, mentally healthy, controlled, and heart-whole state of existence. He's a very appealing, likable guy. I'm glad he's so committed to continuing to work on himself, and work through all his issues no matter what it takes.

One thing that sticks out - all the women he hooked up with were highly complimentary about him or fell in love with him. He's not a sadistic, nasty guy with women -- quite the opposite. That all these women were clamoring for him indicates that there is much that is genuinely likable and good in him. Except, of course, for his prior inability to resist temptation and keep it zipped.

I don't know if he'll ever get control of his issues. While no woman in the world should put up with his prior behavior, there may still be an incredibly loving, solid and wonderful guy underneath begging to finally emerge. And I do hope that Elin is still there when it happens, to claim her extraordinary prize for good.

It must not be much, otherwise you would have never done it in the first place.

With Tiger using Ari Fleischer as his adviser, we can expect more of his weak attempts to regain popularity and the dollars that come with it.

If he wanted to come clean, why Ari Fleischer and the public relations "play-book" used by Neo-Con's, during the days of Bush-Cheney?

I can't get past the interviews voice......it makes me laugh too much. On another note....Jim Furyk won after 32 months. So yes, there are other golfers out there.

You're right but sports reporters always take a soft line. Don't expect to see Tiger on Meet the Press.

I've been waiting all winter for baseball season to start. Now that it's just two weeks away, I wish ESPN, the columnists and pundits, would just write a whole lot about Tiger Woods' disgusting life before the first pitch is thrown, to get it out of their systems. If that's possible. It has never been about sports. It should have been in the Media section all this time. Woods is in the league with Gov. Sanford of So. Carolina. Just can't get enough of putting his face in the camera and playing the unfortunate who can't help himself.
He's enjoying his not very believable Identity as a desirable stud. He is merely rich and no more. At least Jennie Sanford got out with her dignity and self respect.

Such a fake! He doesn't care about his wife and family. He just cares about his public image and that's why he is standing there giving this interview. He has no one to answer too and it's all just a stint to get back. I wonder how his affairs came out in the open in the first place. Did his wife caught him?? If yes, then it just proves that had that not happened, he would have continued doing what he was doing before. I never liked him in the first place and I know the reason now :)

What does Tiger mean, "nobody knew"?

His best friend Chris Bell set up the travel for his liaisons with these mistresses.

Denial runs rampant still!

I managed to watch about twelve seconds of it.

"Tiger 2.0-The Penitent" is as much a fake as his previous well-crafted public persona/brand.

Still suffering under the delusion that he is owed control over the lives of those around him because he "golfed good".

Every move he has made has been aimed at protecting the brand (and his undeserved control) above all else.

My reaction was surprise that it is obvious he has not yet hit bottom.

Ooooh, I see...for you to be satisfied Tiger has to "hit bottom". What does that look, feel, taste like for you. No wife, children, friends...completely broke and homeless, asking for a handout from sponsors and his fellow pros?

Anyone who screws up their lives, without commiting a felony crime, still can control much of their life. He doesn't become a slave to the media whores who arrogantly believe they are entitled to step on him and walk in, uninvited, into his private life. The access give to that side of him is his call...just as it would be for you or me. He's not an elected official or someone who's given the public's trust (religious leader, teacher/administrator, banker, etc.).

Why would anyone give up control of their own life...to be manipulated and humiliated solely for the benefit of ratings and sales? Forget it, don't answer...I'm not interested! You're just another Tiger hater that existed long before the scandal. You now have some fodder to camoflauge the jealousy and discriminatory basis of your distaste.

My reaction to you waiting to see Tiger "hit bottom"...watch out for eye strain. In the meanwhile...go f**k yourself. And that's genuine!!

He is a great golfer. In the interview he came across like a Stepford husband. He said all the keywords, great timing just not quite hittling the real sincere notes. Any who can't wait to watch him at the Masters. Glad to have him back in pro golf. Lord knows how golf has been since his absence.

Very nice insight!!

I believe the "great timing without hitting the real sincere notes" is therapy. The keywords and timing are a part of what one is given as tools for making amends and seeking redemption. The emotion (sincere notes?) will come with time. With Tiger so far, every interview has been either supremely confident, almost cocky, or very measured and careful of making mistakes.

I agree, he is a great golfer...his chosen profession. It's good to have him going back to work!!
03:21 PM on 03/22/2010
With all of these rules that Tiger has to be interviewed just illustrates how controlling he is in both his public and private life.
He is enormously out of touch with the common fan. He refuses to say the word "sex" or "infidelity". Half of his answers were "private matters".

Almost ALL of this mess is private. It would be very inappropriate of him to share details about communications with Elin. Regardless of the situation, husband and wife is still privileged.

Absolutely nothing wrong with having control of one's private life. You and I demand that in our lives, so why not him? PLEASE explain how the content of that interview shows he is out of touch. You've listed a number of buzz words/phrases and media talking points.

Unclehenry is right. You say it's private but he's there willingly talking about it. The point is, he looks scared of the questions. I'm hoping we've already heard the worst of it so he should just relax and tell us what we already know, using words like infidelity and sex. And for God's sake, he should stop telling us that he isn't perfect. We knew that before all this happened. The other route is simply blow the public off. That's his choice but he is clearly attempting to resurrect his image.

It just boggles the mind how the women who transgressed with him air the act publicly for adoration and with great pride, at the same time Tiger is apologizing to the same public in humiliation.
02:07 PM on 03/22/2010
you mean it just boggles your mind. your mind is small. he's married. has children. fake public image. it's called hypocrisy and usually people are ashamed and feel humiliated when they are outed as a poser.

I in no way condone or forgive all that went on - but since it's pretty well all public knowledge, I think that fair's-fair and he should consider suing these "women" for half of the money they've since garnered at his expense. Especially the one considering a book (sorry, couldn't bring myself to actually say WRITING A BOOK lol). He easily deserves half of all of this. Why the heck not?!
