Michelle Obama Hits New York, Sees Broadway Musical 'Memphis' (PHOTO)

While her husband was busy getting health care reform passed on Sunday, Michelle Obama traveled to New York to see the Broadway musical "Memphis." As temperatures climbed toward 70 degrees, the first lady went bare-legged in a striped skirt by Jasmin Shokrian, paired with a black shirt and cardigan. She carried a black purse and wore light green flats.

FLOTUS attended the show with her mother, daughters, and, Hollywood Life reports, about 15 other people. HL's source says that at the end of the show "Michelle and the girls were dancing in the aisle! They were clapping their hands over their heads and having the best time!"

Page Six reports that the Obamas arrived in New York on Saturday, when they visited Dylan's Candy Bar and caught a performance of Blue Man Group. Before seeing "Memphis" on Sunday, they ate brunch at Mesa Grill. After the show, they got a private tour of the Empire State Building, devoured cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery in the West Village and ate at the Russian Tea Room. Best. Weekend. Ever.

The last time Mrs. Obama saw a Broadway show was in May, when the first couple saw "Joe Turner's Come and Gone" following dinner at Blue Hill. The excursion was the fulfillment of a promise by President Obama to take his wife to see a Broadway play as a thank you for her support during his presidential campaign.

My family was activist in Birmingham, AL, in the 60s.

We had a black maid who was afraid to run more than 2" of bath water for fear of a child drowning, because she knew exactly what would happen to her in the event of an accident.

We watched in horror as our allies took to the streets with guns and burned great swaths of Detroit, where my grandparents lived.

We bought guns.

Then we moved.

I'm proud of how far the country has come in my lifetime.

I'm also very surprised, because I was sure, in the 70's, that the entire African-American culture would self-destruct and that white people would always find a way to put them in the back of the bus.

That said, I think we still have thinly-veiled racism all over the country today.

I hope my son sees that behavior just stop in his lifetime.

im taking my little girl to NYC to have tea at The Plaza for her 10th birthday next month. can't wait. such a memory. im going to get her a charm bracelet with the statue of liberty and a tea cup. - i love having a daughter.

just like michelle obama. there's nothing like running around with your daughters. it's awesome.

On Sunday I saw photos of President Johnson signing Medicare into law. Lady Bird Johnson was standing at his elbow. Can you imagine the hysteria that would have ensued had Michelle Obama stood behind the President this morning? She may as well enjoy going to the theater. She has fewer rights than a presidential wife had forty-five years ago.

the best plane in the country is ferrying the first family and 15 people at the peoples expense. it costs over 200k to run af1 for an hour and how much did it cost us to protect the extra 15 people? you have a nerve to complain.
next time its on your dime then you can complain unbtil then its just projected victimhood.

And you whiners didn't complain at all every time the best plane in the country and with even larger entourages flew the Bush family back and forth to Crawford, Texas every other week. And you didn't complain when the Secret Service had to go bar-hopping with the Bush twin lushes every weekend. Nor do you ever utter a single word of complaint about how much it costs taxpayers for the numerous Secret Service entourages that continue to provide protection for all of the living former Presidents and Vice Presidents and their families, despite the fact that they too travel all over the world and continue to be protected on the taxpayers' dime.

When you do the research and run up the tab on what this must be costing us and start complaining about that, then perhaps your argument will look like something more than it really is concerning the Obamas - racism and jealousy.

Buying tickets for so many people saves lots of money as anyone familiar with theater in NY will tell you. But how would you know that? You would like our First Lady and her family to never leave the compounds of the White House.

The haters like you make the cost of the security go up as they need more people to protect this President and his family. So, think twice before you hate.
