"Reading Rainbow," the popular children's show that ran from the mid-80's until 2006, may return, according to the show's host LeVar Burton via his Twitter account. The Emmy Award winning television show, which aired on PBS, featured celebrities reading books as well as other segments about books and reading, and each episode would include brief recommendations by kids for kids.

In a tweet on March 19, LeVar Burton said:

Great show, there's nothing good on TV for kid's these days. Remember Bill Nye the science guy? My kids were hooked on him. Wish he would come back too.

Wonderful idea.

Now if parents would only get kids to watch it instead of Miley Montana ..........

I always thought of the Mouse Channel as the Borg, when it comes to kids... "resistance is futile.."

my kids, who are now young adults, loved this show. I'm glad that it will come back for a new generation of young people.

"Reading Rainbow" was a really good show. It would be neat if LeVar Burton hosted the show in his Kunta Kinte persona.

Reading Rainbow was a great show! Having worked with kids who are challenged readers for years, I can absolutely say that being read out loud to is the most important way to develop a child's early reading skills - and get them to love books! So many parents who work full time or have trouble reading to their kids can use a show like Reading Rainbow to help fill that gap! I can't wait for the new Reading Rainbow!

I thought the show was older than that?! Regardless, if it gets kids to read more (or at all) then I'm all for it.

Oh I hope so! Our Library had "Reading Rainbow Kits" where you could borrow the episode on video and each of the books featured in it. That was a great way to expose kids to a love of reading. We still sing the theme song in our household. "Take a look! It's in a book!"

My sons were fans of Reading Rainbow, and they are all college graduates and excellent readers.

Our local PBS station (Sacramento, KVIE) is NOT receptive to new shows. Maybe price, maybe other things. I have gone before the KVIE Board to ask about the scheduling, but was told to NOT do that again. The General Manager brushed me off with all my inquires, so now I have NO say. Yes I no longer contribute to our PBS station. I donate to the shows.

Question: How doe we get our Local PBS station to hear our request to put this show on their schedule????

I loved this show when I was a kid. I also watched it when I was in my 20's too (and no I didn't have kids). I'd love to see it come back.

This is awesome news.

The '2.0' almost suggests an internet-based edition; but I suppose that's just as common a turn of phrase for a sequel now as various other terms.

Maybe 'Son of Reading Rainbow' would be a more interesting working title ;)

I'll give credit where credit is due. LeVar Burton and 'Reading Rainbow' gave my two boys a great attitude toward reading.

Wow, this is kinda creepy. I'm watching Star Trek: The Next Generation right now, and Levar Burton is one of the stars. In fact, he's on air right now.
