Spring has unveiled the first 4G Android cell phone, called the HTC Evo 4G, at CTIA Wireless 2010.

Engadget calls the HTC Evo 4G 'easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed' and 'Sprint's Android-powered knight in superphone armor.'

The Associated Press writes of the new HTC Evo 4G:

To capitalize on the network, Sprint will be releasing a large, iPhone-style smart phone called the Evo 4G, made by HTC Corp. of Taiwan. The phone, showed off by CEO Dan Hesse at the CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas on Tuesday, will have two cameras: a high-resolution one on the back and a low-resolution one on the front, on the same side as the screen. That's a convenient setup for video calls.

Video calls are possible - just barely - on current cellular networks, but carriers discourage them or charge extra for them because they consume a lot of wireless capacity. In addition, there aren't many phones with front-facing cameras, making it difficult to talk and capture video simultaneously.

PETER SVENSSON, ASSOCIATED PRESS:

NEW YORK — Sprint Nextel Corp. is aiming to make video calls a selling point of the new, faster data network that it's spending billions with co-investors to build.

The wireless carrier on Tuesday announced that this summer, it is launching the first phone that will be able to use the new Clear wireless broadband network. Though it is live in 27 cities and offers faster data speeds for laptops than current cellular broadband networks, Clear doesn't yet work with phones.

Video calls are possible – just barely – on current cellular networks, but carriers discourage them or charge extra for them because they consume a lot of wireless capacity. In addition, there aren't many phones with front-facing cameras, making it difficult to talk and capture video simultaneously.

The Clear network offers speeds similar to home broadband, making it better at handling streaming video. It's based on a technology known as WiMax, and it's referred to as fourth-generation, or 4G, because it's faster than the current, third-generation cellular networks.

For the moment, Clear is ahead of the competition on wireless data speeds. However, because the network hasn't been accessible from phones and has limited coverage, it hasn't stopped Sprint from losing subscribers. And even if phones could now access Clear, common tasks such as e-mail and Web browsing wouldn't run much faster than on a 3G phone. That's why Sprint is promoting it as a medium for video calling.

"We really wanted people to be able to experience what 4G can do for them," said David Owens, Sprint's director of product marketing.

Sprint doesn't have a video chat application for the Evo yet, but will help developers create such software, Owens said.

The phone will have a 4.3-inch touch screen, 30 percent larger than the iPhone's screen, and run Google Inc.'s Android software. Sprint didn't say what it would cost or exactly when it would be available. Nor did the company say what it would charge for service, or if there would be an extra charge for 4G access.

Laptops will be able to connect to the Evo via Wi-Fi to gain access to the WiMax network, making the phone a "portable hotspot." Owens wouldn't say if Sprint would charge extra for that feature. Verizon Wireless charges $40 per month for that feature on the Palm Pre Plus, which has 3G access.

The Clear network is run by Clearwire Corp., of which Sprint owns a slim majority. The other investors include cable TV companies, Intel Corp. and Google. Covered cities include Philadelphia, Chicago, Seattle and Atlanta. Clearwire, which is based in Kirkland, Wash., plans to expand this year to cover New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Houston and Washington, D.C., among other cities.

Owens said Sprint doesn't plan to limit sales of the Evo phone to markets with Clear coverage, because it will work on Sprint's regular 3G network as well.

Shares of Sprint, which is based in Overland Park, Kan., closed regular trading Tuesday up 12 cents at $3.83. In extended trading, after the phone announcement, the shares were up another 2 cents. Clearwire shares closed up 9 cents at $7.87 and gained another 2 cents after the announcement.

I like it too ... I'm just worried about monthly charges to use it. The current cost is $59.99/month for Sprint's 4G mobile hotspot. That doesn't include phone service.

I'm guessing the Everything plan for this phone will start at $99.99/month, but I'm hoping we can still get this phone and not have to use 4G if that pricing is accurate. I'd get it if we can still use the $69.99 Everything plan.

Better than its concept phone actually. See the comparisson: http://2su.de/mbd

HTC EVO: Will it give a lethal blow to Nexus One and a tough competition to iPhone4? I personally think it is going to hit Nexus One very hard....

Good phone at first glance but I would wait until HTC gets their act together. Sprint's 4G is not where most of us are just yet - so there's really no rush.

Just glad I didn't settle for the Nexus One (thank you Google for helping me NOT want to get it since I could not play with it before buying :)

But HTC could correct a few things before EVO's launch:
Like changing the friggin name cause most people I talk to about the phone reply back EVIL? What?
I am probably not pronouncing it right. teehee

But seriously,
How about using a better screen like AMOLED that is brighter, uses less battery and is viewable from more angles — instead of the not so great TFT they settled on that kinda stinks - even at high rez. See comparison video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FICAHsE_enE

Or how about using the latest standard WLAN: 802.11n, and not just the slower 802.11b/g that can't support wifi hi-def video streaming or faster web browsing.

Or how about offering the consumer the choice of getting the phone with or without a physical keyboard. Some would sacrifice thinness to use a real keyboard (the Droid isn't that thick, is it?).

If they can only get their act together - HTC could blow all competitors out of the water.

Sprint announced "Coming Summer 2010".

Summer 2010 will be from June 21 to September 21. That's 91 days of summer and 91 different possibilities.

Right now I want to say 7/24/2010 as a possible release date. Its just a hunch, I don't have any inside info or own a crystal ball (even though it will be pretty cool)

What do you think the release date will be? Share your opinion at http://www.Evo4GForum.net take care.

Finally, Sprint is fervently turning around its poor public image! I wholeheartedly welcome a new competitor to Verizon and AT&T, both who have long-abused their customers with limited services and lucrative fees.

But to fully succeed at gaining market share, Sprint is going to have to introduce many more innovative phones, like Samsung Haptic that features a projector. Otherwise they will crumble once again by Verizon and AT&T who recently announced their plans for investing in the WiMax technology.

Sounds to me that the person who wrote this article does not like Sprint or HTC and possible not even the Android OS.
As for Sprints services, I have had no major issues with Sprint. I like the fact that they do not seem to rush on getting product out and take their time to make what I consider good decisions. Although they may not be the cheapest, they have certainly been reliable for my needs.
HTC: After my first bad experience with a Windows OS, I kept away from HTC for a while. When the Hero came out with the Android OS and I saw it in action I decided to give them another chance. I did not buy one but kept a look out as I saw the potential. I did however recommend the Hero to friends who wished iPhone was not married to ATT and they are very satisfied. Now with the upcoming release of the EVO 4g, I will upgrade from my blackberry that I currently use. I think that if Apple does not expand it's service from ATT they may find that the market share will begin to drop as the Android OS gets better and better. In my opinion that is why they have launched proxy suits against Google and HTC. While on the outside it looks like they are going after HTC, the true objective it the Android OS.

Even an apple fanboi like me has to admit that the specs for that phone sound pretty darned impressive. Regarding the hardware I don't know what apple could do with the 4G iPhone to top that. I suspect that the next iPhone may match those specs, but it will be the software which will again keep the iPhone ahead of the pack. Apple's biggest technical advantage has always been about seemless superior software integration with their hardware while the competition usually falls short in one of those areas.

Apple will be waiting a long time before it can come out with the iPhone 4G... AT&T is committed to using LTE, nit WiMAX, for it's 4G network and hasn't even started building it,

Funny how HTC shows how innovative it can be and now Apple's only response is to litigate.

I used to own stock in Clearwire, the company that made the 4g and that Sprint bought. Oh well.

I use a cheap little $19.99 virgin phone that I can use anywhere! I have never had one problem with it. Not 1, but every one I know who uses an iphone has problems. Most can't even use the iphone in their own home! It's a joke to me. And I have mac everything at home, G5 computer, ipod, etc.
10:45 PM on 03/23/2010
Hah what a bunch of loons here! "Give me my apple, only apple can do it." You know, you can really tell a persons personality by the companies they choose, and people who pick companies that way over charge for products simply for the name usually lean left. It's easy to tell you apart from the rest. My sprint plan has been great, phone has been great, coverage has been great, price has been great, and the tether connectivity has worked great for me. Enjoy your AT&Junk and the 3G you just got that is only in a few cities....
12:08 AM on 03/24/2010
What an assinine comment. What does liking apple have to do with leaning left? Besides Att is the co that cooperated with bushs data mining scheme not very lefty.
03:47 AM on 03/24/2010
And the ones who lean to the right are on their porches strumming their Deliverance "toe tapping fantasies.

Personally, I dont give a cr@p about Apple, Sprint, or any other the other tech companies. In five months this phone will be replaced by some new STATE of the art phone that can wipe your butt. You can have your swiss army knife phone for all I care.

The T-Mobile HTC HD2 that debuts tomorrow is a nicely specced phone too. And it will run on speeds faster than 4G by years end in major cities.

And Microsoft has already announced that it will not be upgradable to Windows Phone 7. Spec-wise, the Evo beats the HD2.

Faster than 4g? The network that only exists as WiMax in a few select cities because it's being rolled out? What network would that be, 5G? magic?
