World's Largest Meatball Donated To Meals On Wheels

First Posted: 05/24/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:55 PM ET

It took 327 pounds of beef chuck to break the record for the world's largest meatball but that's exactly what Glen Oaks Community College in Michigan did. The meatball broke the previous record set by a New Hampshire meatball that a team prepared by Jimmy Kimmel cooked last November.

At first glance, using hundreds of pounds of meat just to break a world record seems a bit excessive, but 250 pounds of the final product was donated to Meals On Wheels, with the rest being fed to spectators. Just don't ask about the environmental impact.

Ok, do you really think that it is necessary to call this a game. The college was more interested in feeding their community than taking on the world record. It was just a fun twist to a small usually unheard of community in Michigan. I was there people! And so was the county health department. We fed at the time almost 700 people and was complimented on the taste. Really since when does doing things for the better bad. With unemployment in Michigan going up except for small pockets that are actually rising this was something that we could do to help and get excited about. And for those wondering how many breathed on this do you know who has breathed on your fast food or anything? And yes every piece that was fed to people was tested with a meat thermometer to make sure it was at the correct serving temperature. It is hard to actually do this wrong when you have the health department inspector and their boss right behind you. Every precaution was taken. And yes I ate part of it and am still alive to tell the tale. It was cooked and protected until it was cut up by a oven bag and then immediately cut up and put into containers to serve. So if you don't know what happened give it a break!

seems a bit insulting and wasteful to make the primary use of 250lbs of ground beef to set a world record and then to feed the hungry as an after thought.

If this had eyes, it could pass for a 'flying spaghetti monster'.....say yeah pastafarians!

I'm glad it was donated -- I have a problem with some of the food 'competition' shows and stunts where it seems that huge amounts of food are bought and consumed, and possibly wasted, especially with so many people still faced with hunger. I hope that some of these shows follow suit and work out some sort of donation, maybe to a local food bank, something like that anyway. I used to work for a large NY company and asked the cafeteria manager what happened to all the food that we didn't eat -- the menu changed daily and we had the "higher-end" of that particular restaurant food service. They said that the guidelines for donating food were so strict, and the timing and coordination that would have to be implemented was too difficult for them, so they gave up on it. !!! I was really horrified because it meant that the excess was carted off and thrown away/incinerated. Unfortunately I didn't do enough on my own to see if there were other alternatives.

There's no way we can deny that we are severely out of sync with nature when we examine our relationship with meat...and I'm not a vegetarian...
But just looking at that vile pile of sh__+, I'm pretty sure you can take out the pseudo-pragmatic argument of "Settle down! its just like cooking meals in a prison, a school or an army cafeteria"
...because no -- it ain't -- ...
...and don't ask me to explain why...if you have to ask...you probably wont understand the answer.
I think somehow humans degenerate in some way when they get too detached from their food supply...
...of course watching footage of industrial (is there another kind?) slaughterhouses inner workings is quite an efficient way to make oneself eat more vegetables that week....

C'mon you lightweights! ALL meatballs look like this until they're smothered in red sauce.

BON APPETIT!!!

melt some velveeta on top,
side of fries,
a twinkie for dessert
wash it down with some TANG,

one step forward, 2 steps back.

Doncha mean a "package" of Twinkies?
04:32 PM on 03/24/2010
That is not a pretty picture. Are those people touching it and breathing all over it?
05:43 PM on 03/24/2010
Maybe they could sit on it until it hatches.

My thoughts exactly. Ugh. What a waste of time, energy and meat.

That meatball is kind of nasty. Not sure if is even safe, much less does it taste good. It is hard for me to make sure the food I cook is the safe internal temperature, how much harder is a 300lb. meat ball.

Too bad that they didn't get together with Buca di Beppo in Anaheim, CA a couple of weeks ago where they had the world's biggest bowl of spaghetti.

I've been to the Beppo in Chicago and I think this meatball is roughly the size of the garlic clove they put in each and every dish.
