Biden On 'Big F---ing Deal': Obama Loved It

Biden Big Fing Deal Obama Reaction

First Posted: 05/24/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:55 PM ET

Republicans spent months griping about the size of the health care bill. Their talking points questioned how anybody could digest 2,700 pages.

Vice President Joe Biden managed to sum it up in four words.

"A big f---ing deal."

His celebratory comment to President Barack Obama during the signing ceremony was picked up by a microphone on live national TV. Those four words spread to all corners of the media, and were even a hot topic in the next morning's presidential briefing.

"You know what the best thing about yesterday was?" Obama reportedly said on Wednesday. "Joe's comment."

Biden shot back, "If you thought it was so good, why didn't you say it?"

According to Biden, who recounted the exchange during a fundraiser later that day, the president tried to have a t-shirt made with the remark but wasn't able to get one in time. Delivery may have been the only problem, as custom t-shirt makers were already taking orders within minutes of Biden's open mic gaffe.

Justin Fenton of the Baltimore Sun was at the fundraiser in Maryland and got Biden's reflections on what has become a hot internet meme:

With former Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D- MD) in attendance, he said, "I would have never made the faux pas I made the other day if you [Sarbanes] were still around." He said all he could think after he learned the comment had been picked up was "Thank God my mom's not ..."; the rest of comment was drowned out by laughter.

The vice president has been getting a lot of laughs recently, also bringing down the house at the Radio and Television Correspondents' Dinner last Wednesday.

Fenton's pool report indicated that Biden went on to predict some Democratic losses in November. It continues:

Talked about recent health care legislation being passed. "The thing this portends the most is that this country is capable of handling complex, ideological divisive, consequential issues. If we were unable to move the ball on this issue, not only in the political sense might we be dead... But in terms of being able to deal with other major issues on our plate, we would've been done. Absolutely done."

"What happened two days ago represents fundamental change in an incredibly, incredibly difficult political environment."

He said "reports of the demise of the Democratic party in November are premature," to applause, but also predicted Democratic losses in the fall. He said he would be more specific if not for the reporter in the room.

"We're going to have losses. ... Barack generated such an overwhelming turnout and enthusiasm, that we had the biggest turnout in history. It was gigantic. And a lot of really good Democrats got washed up on shore and all of a sudden were Congressmen, in districts that Democrats have no business having Congressmen. I'm not here to tell you we're gaining seats. But I'm telling you, we're going to go into the second half of our administration, with a solid Democratic majority in the House and the Senate, and with the wind at our backs."

He said Republicans were dishonest about their interest in health care. "The ace we have in our pocket is the Republican party. The Republicans concluded that their success lies in our failure."

He claimed that he knows of at least seven senators who want to vote with Democrats but were instructed by the party not to. "The American people are smart. They smell a rat. They know there was nothing about trying to get a better bill."

About 60 people attended the fundraiser at Cordish's home in Lutherville, just north of Baltimore. Ticket prices started at $2,500 per person.

the important thing is joe didn't mean for it to be heard and it wasn't clear. i didn't hear it. when media mentioned it i tried again. you had to really strain to hear it. it took me 3 tries and i only did it coz i thought people made it up. then again, his office is next door to rahm's so what do we expect. however, i hope obama wears no such t-shirt it would be a bad example. i don't even think they should've mentioned the t-shirt. sounds like damage control.

Joe is a good guy.................. we need a lot more like him in DC.

Never a dull moment with Biden! You never know what to expect from him. One day he appears on national news after attending mass with ashes on his forehead and the next time we see him he is dropping the f bomb. I don't think Obama really knows what to do with this character. He reminds me more of a court jester than a vice president. I don't take him serious enough to dislike the guy.

For all of you so scandalized because of "the children". What happened to explaining to our children that we are all human and make mistakes??

I let a word slip while I was driving (out of fear not anger as I was almost sideswiped) and my kids called me on it! Why? Because I've taught them that we don't speak that way! In that moment, however, I also showed them that I am a human being!
I can't believe people are making such a big deal over this. Our children are impressionable but not stupid (unless we raise them that way). It goes something like this: "Oops the VP made a mistake that was not intended for us to hear...that doesn't mean that you (child) are allowed to repeat it!
End of story.

I've done the same thing. I don't swear around my son. He knows swearing isn't a good way to get respect. He also has heard me slip up in extreme circumstances. He knows sometimes people don't always think before they speak and that it doesn't make you a bad person. Frankly, I'd be a little more concerned had there been children (aside from one 11-year-old) present. It was an accident. I doubt the signing was watched by a great many children, and I really doubt any of them heard Biden. I didn't hear it until someone directed us to listen.

That's another good point. I didn't hear him at all. It took replaying the video about 3 times before I caught the word.

you gotta love Joe Biden. if nothing else, he says what an everyday guy would say if given the opportunity.
11:23 AM on 03/26/2010
Biden is one of my favorite politicians. I like his gaffs and foibles. I like that he doesn't pretend to be who he isn't. I don't expect someone to be a saint because they hold office. As long as Biden's not out there condemning others for using terrible language, even when they think no one can hear it, I'm good with Biden.

Barack Obama was smart to choose Joe Biden as his Vice President. They are Yin and Yang. They don't occupy the same space and Biden brings the ruff edges need in the Obama Presidency. They're a good team. YEA TEAM OBAMA!

Isn't it about time we just brought the "F word" out of the closet, and decriminalized it? Kids know what the "bleep" stands for.

If we bring it out of the closet, the time wasted on news stories when someone "gaffes" will be greatly appreciated.

The last time? Well, that would be Cheney.

He told Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont to "go f--- yourself." So what do you think, terry63? Going to be critical now?
06:48 AM on 03/26/2010
I liked Chris Matthews's observation the other day: These Biden gaffes are never uttered in malice. You can just enjoy them as Joe being Joe because he's not out to hurt anyone. Cheney's big "F" moment, on the other hand, was not only malicious toward Leahy, it was an insult to the very institution he was supposed to be presiding over.

What a refreshing change after looking at the Cheney Scowl for 8 long years.
Two small moments capture the essence of both VP's:
2008:
Cheney scowling through an interview-when asked about recent polls that show about two-thirds of Americans say the fight in Iraq is not worth it, Cheney sneered, "So?"
2010:
Biden flashing his drop dead smile and congratulating Obama on his victory in the health care fight
"It's a big f ng deal!"

I have to pinch myself-it is true-we actually have a POTUS and a VP who care about us-WOW-
Joe-you were right -it is a BIG F NG DEAL!!!!!
